Speaking In Tongues

Greetings,

why did they? As in, is there a reason that 'speaking in tongues' manifested at that time?
Does Scripture give us any indication or direction on this?

Bless you ....><>
Hi Br. Bear,

Actually, yes. Speaking in tongues was prophesied as a sign of judgement against Israel. If you read Isaiah 28 and 29 it's a judgment against Isael at the time of Christ and God said through Isaiah, that He would speak to "this people" in tongues. The message that would be spoken was the rest that God had promised. It turns out this was the Gospel. When the leadership of Israel saw people speaking languages that they did not know, they should have immediately thought of Isaiah 28. People speaking in languages they had not learned was a sign of Israel's coming judgement. As we see, that judgment came in 70 AD.

Friend some place along the line you have yielded yourself to some spirits other then the Holy Spirit in Your THINKING.

In order to make what you are trying to make true you violate other Scriptures.

Not to mention in order to make your claim true then you must make Jesus a LIAR such as Mark 16:17.

As I said your thinking is hindered.
At this point you are simply aiding the devil in perverting Gods Word.

Blessings
Those gifts did follow those who believed the apostles teaching. Jesus didn't say they would follow every other Christian. The purpose of those gifts was to confirm the word the apostles preached. The apostles are the only ones given authority to speak on God's behalf (other than the prophets). The gifts were a confirmation that the apostles were indeed speaking on God's behalf.

And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
Acts 4:13

Young's Literal Translation
And beholding the openness of Peter and John, and having perceived that they are men unlettered and plebeian, they were wondering -- they were taking knowledge also of them that with Jesus they had been --

A lot of people quote from Paul's words in 1 Corinthians in support of speaking in tongues. However, those instructions were given to a church that had the gift of tongues. Anyone who quotes these words today must first prove that Tongues is active today. If the gift is not active today then the instructions regarding it have no bearing on today's Christian.

Quoting from 1 Corinthians does not prove that Tongues is an active gift today.

Another thing I think many miss is that 1 Corinthians is a letter of chastisement. Paul is chastising them for abusing their gift.

Another point, Brother, is that it must irritate the stick-in--the-mud Judaic folk that so many people in so many languages all over the world are praising and proclaiming the LORD [Who is 'their' God] and to top it off, telling of the Messiah, our Lord Jesus Christ

Yep!

Quoting from 1 Corinthians does not prove that Tongues is an active gift today.

From my perspective, the burden of proof goes the other way. The gifts are active until the Bible says they aren't anymore.

Mark 16:16; "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
Mark 16:17; "These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues;
Mark 16:18; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

If you don't like 1Corinthians, there is also Acts which was likely written after Paul's epistles.

But a statement like this always makes me wonder.... which parts of the Bible don't apply anymore? How/why do we get to choose which parts don't apply to me anymore?
If tongues don't apply anymore, then does God still heal? Do we still need preachers and teachers? Do we still need wisdom and knowledge?

Rev 22:19; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.

The Way I see it, gifts are given to edify the Church.
The Way Paul saw Tongues, though very valid, it was not as useful in edifying the Church as Prophesying.
If Tongues are used, it would be more profitable if someone gifted in interpretation of Tongues was available so everyone could be efified!

Though speaking to God with tongues, maybe very real and personally very nice, it alone, does nothing to edify tje Church!

Hi B-A-C,

Actually, the onus is one the one making the claim. If people claim to have the gift it's on them to give the proof.

Regarding your question about which parts of the Bible don't apply anymore, I would simply ask, does the Law of Moses apply today? How/why do we get to choose which parts don't apply anymore? We don't choose which parts apply we look at the Scriptures to see which parts apply. The Scriptures tell us quite a bit about the Gift of Tongue.

1. Scripture tells us that it was a sign to Israel
2. Paul said it would end
3. Paul said it was for unbelievers, not believers.
4. Luke tells us that the gift was giving by the apostles (they're not here today. How does one get that gift?)
5. The Scriptures tell us that they were for Jesus and the apostles.

So, it's the Scriptures that tell us that the gifts ceased. But, we also find the same thing in church history. Some of the church leaders who followed shortly after the apostles, who write on the subject, say that there was only a remnant of the gifts left in their day. If we look at the totality of information the subject we can come to a pretty clear understanding of the subject. However, I think most just look at 1 Cor. and assume this is still the case.

Thank God I did not continue to listen to those who do not have the Holy Spirit and tried to convince me that the full gospel of salvation was no longer available.
I was witnessed to by evangelists who shared their testimonies to the miraculous and opened up their Bibles and shared the scriptures with me.
Being Roman Catholic at the time I was really challenged by the word of God.
I was troubled by the scriptures on being born new again and the many other verses about the Holy Spirit so I prayed to Jesus "is this the truth what these people are telling me?"
I kept praying about this new church asking Jesus to show me that He approved of this other church - The Revival Fellowship - and He did move me to eventually attend a Sunday meeting.

I heard the gifts of tongues followed by the gifts of interpretation and then three gifts of prophecy for the first time. I listened very intently [still holding onto my Catholic scepticism] to see if I could find fault with what was being said.
But in the end the wisdom spoken was undeniably of God and very edifying and encouraging. It was then that the penny dropped and I realised the difference between my RC church and this church; for here in an unremarkable hall
God was present and speaking to his church - speaking as a father to his children.
On the following Wednesday night after the meeting I was baptised by full immersion confessing my faith in Christ Jesus as my Lord and Saviour who died for me.
Then I started praying again confessing many sins and desiring the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
On Sunday 1st December 1996 I was filled with the Holy Spirit and burst out speaking in a new tongue and received a wonderful revelation about Jesus and the Bible.
And like all others in my new Pentecostal church we speak in tongues as the Bible evidence of baptism of the Holy Spirit.
That day I enjoyed my first miracles and healings - I was instantly healed and set free from cigarettes, marijuana and intravenous drug addictions. Later I let go of alcohol when I submitted on this.
God went on to heal my bleeding kidneys and my blackened lungs.

Being Pentecostal I know what the book of Acts does teach about believers of the gospel shall speak in new tongues and how this is for everybody - and that this sign is completely different to what Paul is writing of in 1Corinthians
where he teaches the unruly Corinthians how to get their act together and do things decently and in order.
It is a shame that most churches today do not experience the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit that God wants to give to disciples - wisdom, knowledge, discerning of spirits, faith, healings, miracles, prophecy, various kinds of tongues
and interpretation of tongues.
Praying in tongues (praying in the Spirit) is very powerful and delivers through faith many blessings for oneself and for others who are prayed for.

Despite the unbelief that the original Pentecostal gospel of the first and only church in the NT and the accompanying nine gifts are not for today, God completely ignores all such denials, and is planting new vineyards throughout
the world where there is still an ongoing Holy Spirit revival through many nations with these signs following them that believe.
Matt 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come.

That's on the line of my reasoning. Tongues is very Biblical as a gift and probably many have that gift!

Though it genuinely must be an awesome way to personally communicate with God, Paul was adimate about it was not the best way to edify the Church.

Nowadays, I'm only left with thought that if someone goes to Pentecostal Church, and can't Speak in Tongues, that they may leave not feeling saved?!

Greetings,

The LORD God is a restoring God.

At the Tower in/of Babel language was scattered and likewise, the people. The Children learnt to talk to the LORD, with help from the Prophets. it was 'their' God and 'their' language, different from all the (other) nations that they prided themselves in and rightly so, for He showed Himself as He would to them as He did - I AM that I AM, and indeed it was he Who chose them and nurtured them.

Prophecy pointed to the time when The LORD God would send His Word for the Nations (Gentiles), a time also when Israel (Jews) would be cut off for a season, until the fulfilling of the time of the Nations (Gentiles). it was due to UnBelief that they entered not in, that they rejected the Messiah, that The Word of the LORD would come to pass, as it did and as it will, for He is Who He is and all glory and praise belongs to Him.

Now, all languages (nearly all) offer praise to the LORD God, and it is through His Son that He has brought this to pass.

Bless you ....><>
