Speaking in Tongues: Its Origin [Ancient and Modern] , Purpose, and Power

Actually you don't believe it by denying that those temporary gifts ceased as the Apostle Paul prophesied long time ago. There's also something he said that you should keep in mind!

1 Corinthians 14:9,19,21,22
9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

I know you love to mention verses like the 22 to support this gift but you need to connect it to the 21. It was a sign for JEWS! That prophecy was announced to unbelieving Jews. There's no need to speak in tongues if your audience is Gentile.

23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

This proves the point that it does not help any Gentile to listen to you speaking in tongues, it's better to do what Paul told us in verse 19, to speak few words with our own understanding.
Its interesting how you cherry pick the scripture to make it say what you want it to say. This makes you a false teacher, a false prophet....I think you need to talk to God about your lies. And repent for them.

I think personally that many of so called christians should not say about holy spirit baptism. God will not forgive you.

Let me just say that verse 8 does NOT say tongues have ceased....It says they will cease....NOT the same thing at all...
Indeed and so it is:

"Charity (love) never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away" I Cor 13:8

The prophecies also shall fail; the knowledge shall also vanish away. Are we without prophecy? Are we without knowledge?

As for the tongues, I have been praying consistently via the gift of tongues since 1976. For many years now I have talked with God daily in tongues. I may pray some for particular things or people in English but as I really get into the Spirit, for me, I always move from English to an unknown tongue.

...why we would need to get the latter via the Holy Spirit if we got many ways nowadays to learn foreign languages!
There is a diversity of tongues gifted to men, not only the speaking or interpretation of languages foreign to us. One gift is the one I have had all of these years is a private prayer language in which I am able to pray for things that my flesh in its ways would not be willing to do.

And tell me, how can I or anybody believe in the current version of both gifts, prophecy and speaking in tongues, if the leaders of many of the so called blessed churches with those gifts at hand get their pockets full of money, and purchase or lease expensive cars, limos, helicopters, planes, ships, mansions, mega churches and so on? We can't see any difference between them and the RCC in matters of wealth. When did the Lord and His Apostles live like millionaires and attend luxurious temples besides the Temple in Jerusalem that later on was destroyed by Titus?
Don't presume that those false ministers or deceitful ministers of which you speak are all that there is. There have always been liars and deceivers among men, but there are also some, although perhaps few in number, who really walk with God and speak with tongues as a result of God's gift.

My 94 year old pastor received the baptism of the Holy Ghost and began speaking in tongues in 1936 and continues on today. He lives alone in a tiny mobile home behind the church building which he does not own. He has one automobile for transportation. He has clothes and a modest monthly income from when he worked at secular jobs in addition to his ministry. In the eyes of unbelieving carnal men he has nothing that they want, but he is rich in the things of God.

He still travels every month to one or more of the many church groups which want him to minister to them. He used to travel more, but his age and his fragile body have slowed him down. His whole life is vested in God and the people of God. There is a family in the nation of Israel he won to God more than 50 years ago who still beg him to come visit him. He has traveled to Israel more than 30 times, never as a tourist, but always as a minister of God. Last year he went on a 2 month long journey by car and airplane [commercial] to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington state. [The cost of driving the car came out of his pocket. The churches he visited paid for the airline tickets and gave him places to sleep.] The people and ministers in those many congregations are begging for him to come back... but while he wants to... it is up to God as he continues to weaken and there are so many others who desire his ministering. Even as I write this he is driving alone within Oklahoma on a round trip journey of over 300 miles at the invitation of another church group. How many others are doing that at the age of 94?

Yes, he continues talk in tongues and to minister to those in need of what God still has to offer. Seven years ago [2012] his wife after 66 years of marriage passed from this life to finally go to her maker. That hurt him terribly but he recovered and made his final trip to Israel less than a year later.

Give the God the glory my friend for what He is still doing through willing vessels instead of insisting that it is no longer needed. Do you really believe that this nation, these United States is so close to God that they can get along without Him?

My friend , i totally agree and love what you wrote . The gift of tongues is more than a singular type gift . As are all theGifts of the Holy Spirit , each are unique to the user . Healing is a great example , as there are many types of healing . What is also important to note , the Gifts can be used in combination . As an example , a doctor could use a Gift of Sight and see a tumor . Or a Minister using Sight , Discernment and Healing .

The Gifts and usage are limitless as God is limitless.

There Are times / circumstances that the gift of tongues Might be used -- as the Holy Spirit 'sees the need'. But I see a difference between the Biblical 'praying in tongues' when a person is in their private time and it 'happens'. But in a church service, there Are guidelines for Biblical tongues to 'happen'. For when unbelieving Jews are present. Or when there are lots of people who speak different languages in a place and everyone apparently is understanding in their own language. But - due to modern-day interpreters -- that rarely would happen. Even in the United Nations meetings -- a person can see lots of people using head phones. It's the modern technowledgy being used. In those rooms full of people -- everyone is hearing the same speech in their own language.

And, maybe, the gift of knowledge -- receiving a 'word of knowledge' like one TV person says -- well -- the Holy Spirit Does give that and we Do have the written word that God speaks through. So -- I AM skeptical of some of those gifts still being present 'now'.

"Do we still have knowledge today" -- good question -- what Kind of knowledge is being talked about. Some people say that science and Bible Don't mix. And I'd suggest that Real science Does agree With Bible. We need to put Bible First though. When science disagrees with Bible, Then we need to be careful.

The disciples of Jesus were born again after Jesus had resurrected from the dead, and then appeared before his disciples.

John 20:19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
John 20:20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
John 20:21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
John 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

Notice the disciples were in "fear" of the Jews.

Later Jesus tells his disciples to go to Jerusalem, and wait until they were "endued" with power from on high.

Luke 24:48 And ye are witnesses of these things.
Luke 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is for "power" to be able to do what the Lord calls one to do. The disciples had no fear at all after being baptized in the Holy Spirit for service!

What is always happening is that we are growing toward God... This is something we should be doing every single day always remembering that this is the day that the Lord hath made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Jesus grew and so must we... but today must also work while it is day for soon the night cometh when no man can work:

"And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man." Luke 2:52

"I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work."
John 9:4

That is sad indeed, for he was one of the "oldies but goodies" here. I remember having short talks with him in Spanish. I am not sure there is anyone else able to understand talking in that "tongue" on Talk Jesus!

Dear Brother,
Don't often use the language, but know it enough since it was my first language.
That being said.

Un dia nos vamos a ver junto en Gloria con Hermano Bendito.
Siempre dando Gloria al Senor me hermano en Cristo.

Never could add the necessary punctuation's in Spanish via keyboard like you were able to do.

Con el amor de Cristo Hermano mio.

I started learning Spanish a few years ago. Then my instructor decided he wasn't going to teach any more.

Guess I didn't realize that That was a speaking in a prayer language. Or considered 'speaking in tongues'. In some parts of the country it would be called being bi-lingual.

Seems that since I was in high school, in order to qualify for college entrance a person Had to have two-years of a foreign language. Back in Iowa -- we had a choice of German, French , maybe Italian, or Spanish. It was assumed that if a person could learn a foreign language in high school, then their brains could handle college level studying.

It should be clear to anyone that there is a difference between a "river flowing out of a person", "to having a bubbling spring of water" springing up to eternal life. Receiving the Holy Spirit which turns into a "river" after one believes in Jesus to being born of the Spirit referencing to a spring of water to eternal life is quite different.

Joh 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
Joh 7:39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Joh 4:13 Jesus answered her, "Anyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again;
Joh 4:14 but whoever drinks the water that I will give him will never, no never, be thirsty again, for the water that I will give him will become a spring of water that keeps on bubbling up within him for eternal life." (Williams)

Besides any of you could not prove that I was wrong concerning the speaking in tongues being just a sign for unbelieving JEWS!
Act 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who were listening to the message.
Act 10:45 And the believers from among the circumcised [the Jews] who came with Peter were surprised and amazed, because the free gift of the Holy Spirit had been bestowed and poured out largely even on the Gentiles.
Act 10:46 For they heard them talking in [unknown] tongues (languages) and extolling and magnifying God. Then Peter asked,

Curtis -- so -- If I'm understanding you correctly -- you are giving your explanation of the John passage you're sharing.

You're using the Williams translation,
The NKJ reads "but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life,"

The two John passages are different contexts.

Of course they are two different "contexts" because Jesus is talking about two different events.

The passage that I'd been referring to was Acts 2 -- the day of Pentecost -- Devout Jews from all over the land. Being a devout Jew didn't mean they were believers. They, as a people group, did Not accept Jesus Christ as their promised Messiah. So they were hearing what Peter was sharing as non-believing Jews.
