The commandments of Jesus
Matt 5:17; "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
Matt 5:18; "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
Matt 5:19; "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Matt 5:20; "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5 starts off with Jesus saying he didn't come to abolish the law.
In verse 18 he continues by saying not the smallest part of law shall be done away with "until all is accomplished".
In verse 19 he talks about those who might want to do away with the commandments, and even go so as to teach others to do away with the commandments.
So what commandments is Jesus talking about here in Matthew 5?
In verse 21 we see one of the original 10 commandments from Exodus 20:13;
Matt 5:21; "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'
Matt 5:22; "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
But then Jesus adds a few conditions to this commandment to make it even tougher than the original commandment.
We are guilty even we call someone a fool or "good-for-nothing".
In verse 27 we see another of the original 10 commandments from Exodus 20:14;
Matt 5:27; "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY';
Matt 5:28; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Jesus adds to this commandments as well. Even looking at a woman with lust is the same as committing adultery.
In verse 31 there is yet another commandment from the old testament ( Deut 24:1-3; )
Matt 5:31; "It was said, 'WHOEVER SENDS HIS WIFE AWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE';
Matt 5:32; but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Then he adds to this commandment as well, and says you can only divorce under one circumstance.
In verse 33 Jesus talks about vows. This is usually taken to be from Psalms 76:11; possibly Hosea 10:4;
Matt 5:33; "Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.'
Matt 5:34; "But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,
But then Jesus adds to this one also, and says make no oath at all. Let your yes be yes, your no be no. Anything else is evil.
In verse 43 Jesus takes another commandment from Leviticus 19:18;
Matt 5:43; "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.'
Matt 5:44; "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
He adds to this one as well, saying not only love your neighbors, but your enemies as well.
The sermon on the mount continues through Matthew chapter 6.
Jesus mentions things like ...
practicing your righteousess before men to be noticed.
using meaningless repititions in your prayers.
forgiving others, so that God will forgive you.
Jesus keeps going into Matthew 7.
He says we will be judged in the same way we judge others.
Some say the things Jesus mentions in chapters 6 and 7 aren't really commandments. Perhaps not, but they
are still things Jesus told them to do.
In Matt 7:22-23; Jesus talks about those who do not do these things.
The sermon on the mount starts with not abolishing the law.
It ends with Jesus telling those who "practice lawlessness" that He doesn't know them and to depart from Him.
In John 13:34; Jesus gives us a "new commandment".
John 13:34; "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
This is repeated in John 15:12;
When asked what the greatest commandments were, this was Jesus's answer.
Matt 22:36; "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?"
Matt 22:37; And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'
Matt 22:38; "This is the great and foremost commandment.
Matt 22:39; "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'
Matt 22:40; "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."
Also see Mark 12:28-34;
In Mark 7:10; Jesus mentions another one of the 10 commandments from Exodus 20:12;
Mark 7:10; "For Moses said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER'; and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH';
Mark 7:11; but you say, 'If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),'
In Matthew 19, Jesus mentions the 10 commandments again.
Matt 19:16; And someone came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?"
Matt 19:17; And He said to him, "Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."
Matt 19:18; Then he *said to Him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER; YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS;
Matt 19:19; HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."
Also see Luke 10:25-28;
All of this brings us down some verses from John.
John 14:15; "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
John 14:21; "He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him."
John 15:10; "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.
1 Jn 2:3; By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.
1 Jn 2:4; The one who says, "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;
1 Jn 3:24; The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and Jesus in us. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
1 Jn 5:3; For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.
Matt 5:17; "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
