What is pleasing and acceptable to God?
There are a couple of verses in the Bible I run across from time to time.
John 12:46 "I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.
John 12:47 "If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
John 12:48 "He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.
Mat 5:19 "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least
in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
It's interesting, John 12:47 says even if we know the teaching of Jesus and do not do them, he won't judge us.
But he goes on to say, if you reject me altogether, you will be judged.
Matt 5:19 says if we don't follow even one of the least of the commandments, or teach someone else not to follow them, they will be called least in heaven. So even if you do this, you could still make it to heaven.
Notice neither of these verses say not following the commandments will keep you out of heaven.
So if this is true, why bother with any of the rules of the Bible?
I am reminded of mail order brides from the mid 1800's. A lot of men (apparently tens of thousands) came into the American frontier alone. Their vision was to build a house, establish a means of income, and then get married. Of course back in those days they didn't have the internet, or cell phones, or even television. They didn't have eHarmony or ChristianMingle or match.com. There weren't a lot of women to choose from on the American frontier in those days. So just about any woman was acceptable, as long as she had most of her hair and some of her teeth.
It may be that accepting Jesus is all we need to do to be 'acceptable' before God.
But there are a lot of verses that talk about what is pleasing to God.
2 Cor 5:9-10; Eph 5:8-11; Col 3:20; Heb 13:21; 1 Jn 3:22; and a few others.
Now we may not have to do these things to be saved, but why wouldn't you want to do them?
It also talks about the things we can do (or not do) if we love the Lord.
John 14:15; John 14:23; John 21:15-17; Matt 6:24; Mat 22:37; Mark 12:30; 1 Jn 2:5; 1 Jn 4:20; etc...
Finally the Bible talks about rewards, now this isn't the reward of salvation, we aready have that.
1 Cor 3:13-15
