Rad, I think you've unintentionally proven my point. You keep changing the discussion from "Is homosexuality a grievous sin?" to "Why don't you talk more about wealth?" Those are two different questions.
But this isnt a discussion about "is Homosexuality a grievous sin", its entitled "Is it OK to condemn sinners", yes homosexuality is given as an example of sin, but that isnt the main point of it, or am i reading it wrong, read it again and see what you think?.
More importantly, your conclusion that being rich is itself a sin simply isn't supported by Scripture.
Abraham was exceedingly rich (Gen. 13:2). Job was one of the wealthiest men of his day before and after his trial (Job 1:3; 42:10-17). David and Solomon possessed immense wealth by God's blessing. Joseph of Arimathea was a rich disciple (Matt. 27:57). Lydia was a wealthy businesswoman (Acts 16:14-15). Philemon appears to have been a wealthy believer who hosted a church in his home. None of these are condemned merely for possessing wealth.
Yes its true there are rich people in the Bible, even some from the NT, but that doesnt negate the fact that Christ condemned riches and those that possessed them. Or are you saying that God is constrained by the commandments and teachings he gives to us. If God chooses to use rich people to further his Kingdom then that doesnt negate Christs teachings to us about wealth and riches.
The Bible never says, "Rich people are sinners because they are rich." Rather, it repeatedly warns against the love of money (1 Tim. 6:10), trusting in riches (Mark 10:24), and failing to use wealth mercifully (James 5:1-6). Those are not the same thing.
OK where to begin, how about Matthew 6: 19-24 "
19;“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eyes are unhealthy your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! 24“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.", seems pretty clear to me, dont store up treasure on Earth because thats where your heart will be , with your money and not God, you cant serve both God and Money.,
The rich young ruler was not condemned because he possessed money. Jesus exposed the fact that his wealth was his idol. Zacchaeus was not saved because he became poor; he gave generously because salvation had already transformed his heart. Jesus said, "Today salvation has come to this house," because He had found a repentant man whose faith produced fruit.
Lets just see what Christ said about the rich young ruler shall we, not your interpretation of it, Ok Matthew 19:16-30 "
16 Just then a man came up to Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what good deed should I do to have eternal life?”
17 Jesus asked him, “Why ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you want to get into that life, you must keep the commandments.”18 The young man asked him, “Which ones?”Jesus said, “‘You must not murder, you must not commit adultery, you must not steal, you must not give false testimony,19 honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘you must love your neighbor as yourself.
20 The young man told him, “I have kept all of these What do I still lack?”21 Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell what you own and give the money to the destitute, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come back and follow me.” 22 But when the young man heard this statement he went away sad, because he had many possessions.23 Then Jesus told his disciples, “I tell all of you with certainty, it will be hard for a rich person to get into the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into the kingdom of God.” Christ is not talking of "idols", his statement is clear and reiterated in the other Gospels, "It is easier for a CAMEL TO PASS THROUGH THE EYE OF A NEEDLE THAN A RICH MAN ENTER HEAVEN" The warning is to the Rich, as already stated, the very fact of storing up treasure on Earth means your Heart is with your treasure and not God, YOU CANNOT SERVE GOD AND MONEY.
As for Zacchaeus, if he had remained rich he would not have been saved , as Christ stated in in Luke6:24 "But woe to you that are Rich for you have received your consolation", true repentance, true faith requires the giving up of worldly riches to the poor and destitute for you cannot claim to love your neighbour as yourself while you live in wealth and comfort and they live in poverty and suffering. Riches are a barrier to faith and you cant serve both them and god.
Likewise, the rich man in Luke 16 is not condemned simply for having wealth, but because he showed no compassion toward Lazarus while living in self-indulgence. The issue is a hardened heart, not a bank balance.
Again lets see what Christ actually said in Luke 16 and not your interpretation of it, so heres the text " Luke 16: 19-31 "
19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:
28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead."... So why was the rich man condemned to Hell, the answer is in verse 25 " But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.", he was condemned for being Rich, for living a wealthy. comfortable life, and Lazarus was saved for living a life of suffering and poverty, or again as Christ said in luke 6:20 "Blessed are you poor, for yours is the Kingdom of Heaven" and Luke 6:24 "Woe to you that are rich for you have received your consolation",
So when you say "the rich" as though wealth itself is sin, you're reading into the text something Scripture never teaches.
Please re-read what ive already written and let that sink in, whenever Christ mentioned the rich it was to condemn them, the mere possession of Riches is sufficient to send the possessor to Hell, we really need to get that clear.
Finally, you keep asking why I mention sexual sin. The answer is simple: because this discussion is about sexual sin. If we were discussing greed, I would quote every passage condemning greed. If we were discussing lying, I would quote every passage condemning lying. Addressing one sin in a discussion does not imply approval of every other sin.
No youre wrong, well i believe youre wrong, the discussion is about the condemning of sin, not sexual sin, re-read the OP again.
The biblical position is straightforward: greed is sin, hypocrisy is sin, oppression is sin, adultery is sin, fornication is sin, and homosexuality is sin. I don't minimise any of them. My concern is that you repeatedly minimise one by redirecting attention to another.
I dont minimise any of them, but you are constantly addressing sexual sin, particularly homosexual acts, and disregarding the many other grievous sins Christ spoke of ,in particular the sins of wealth and of not showing love and compassion to those in need.
"The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil" (1 Timothy 6:10),
"As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God..." (1 Timothy 6:17-19).
Notice Paul does not tell them to stop being rich. He tells them how to be godly while rich
Hmmm, but according to Christ the mere possession of Riches shows your love for it, and the mere possession of riches condemns the possessor to Hell, you cannot be Godly while rich, well in very few circumstances anyway, for as Christ said when asked in Matthew 19 "Who then can be saved", he answered, "With God everything is possible", but to base your salvation on there being some very small camels and some very large needles in Heaven is to build your faith on sandy ground indeed.
