Rad, I agree that we need humility when dealing with the sins of others. We should examine ourselves first, and none of us has any room for self-righteousness.
But I would disagree with a couple of things. Jesus did not condemn people simply for being wealthy. Scripture says, “the love of money is the root of all evil” (1 Timothy 6:10), not money itself. The real issue is what rules the heart. Likewise, refusing compassion to those genuinely in need can certainly reveal a serious spiritual problem, but wealth itself is not what condemns a person.
Hi bdavidc, as youve probably seen ive had and am having an extensive discussion on the subject of the incompatibility of riches and faith based on Christs teachings, so many thanks for your contribution.
I believe that Christ did condemn the rich, and in the following passage taken from Matthew 6:19-24, explains that "where your Treasure is your Heart will be also", by the very fact of storing up riches on Earth we show our attitude towards them, to quote your words, we show "what rules our Heart" and it isnt Christ. For Christs teaching is clear, "You cannot serve two masters,.... you cannot serve God and Money", there are many other teachings of Christ to show his condemnation of the rich which i could quote but i would be interested in your views on this passage.
"
So the first one is Matthew 6: 19-24, you know it well but i'll print it here for ease of discussion "
"19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."
what is your understanding of Christs words here in relation to the possession of Earthly riches?."
I also don't believe Scripture teaches that Christians continually “tread the line between salvation and condemnation.” That would leave us with no real assurance at all. Jesus said the believer “hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:24). John wrote, “that ye may know that ye have eternal life” (1 John 5:13).
I made that statement in relation to Christs words in both Matthew 7: 21-27 and Matthew 25: 31-46, for in both texts Christ talks of those that call him "Lord" but are still condemned, heres Matthew 7:21-27 "
"21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it."
If many that call Christ Lord and claim they have prophesied, cast out Devils and done many good works in Christs names are condemned, people that obviously believed that they would be saved, then how can any of us truly know if we are not numbered amongst them, for we all have different views on what it means to be a follower of Christ and all cant be right.? So if many professed "believers" are condemned, where does that leave us, to me its walking that fine line between salvation and condemnation trying our best to follow the teachings of our lord and Saviour. But nothing is assured, for Salvation is Gods prerogative alone and for us to pronounce ourselves saved seems to me the ultimate arrogance.
And then in Matthew 25:31-46 we also have those that address Christ as "Lord", but some are saved and some are condemned on the basis of their Love and compassion for those in need, heres the text, Matthew 25:31-46
"31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal."
How do we know if we will be numbered amongst the "Sheep" or the "Goats", what level of Love and compassion is required for salvation, and if "From whom much is given much will be required", then how do we know where that line between salvation and condemnation lies for us as individuals. I dont believe we can condemn anyone to Hell, for that is not our call but gods alone, but likewise ,i dont believe we can say who is saved, for that again is Gods call alone, so we are constantly "treading the line between Salvation and condemnation" unsure of where we stand until faced with God on the Day of Judgement.
Matthew 7 does not require us to become sinless before helping another person with sin. Jesus said first remove the beam from your own eye, “and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye” (Matthew 7:5). The point is repentance and humility, not that only a sinless person can recognize sin.
That is true, i believe that Christs words in Matthew 7:1-5 "
1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.", are reminding us that we are ALL wretched sinners dependent on the Grace, Mercy and forgiveness of God for our salvation and that when judging others sins we must do so with an attitude of humility and recognition of that fact and not with an attitude of self righteousness born of hypocrisy.
For who amongst us can truly take the log out of our own eye to see clearly to remove the mote from our brothers", we can never remove that Log, it will always be there and any judgement we make will be clouded by our own sin, prejudices and lack of understanding. But if we study Christs words and his teachings then we can still recognise sin and rightly call it out even though it is through the clouded prism of our own sinfulness.
So I agree that we should never approach someone else's sin with pride. But humility should not become uncertainty about what God has plainly called sin,
Agreed
nor should our own failures cause us to doubt the promises God has given to those who are truly in Christ.
But the question remains, given Christs words in both Matthew 7:21-27 and Matthew 25:31-46, who amongst us can KNOW that they are "truly in Christ"?. and being the wretched sinners that we undoubtedly are, are we not ALL walking that fine line between salvation and condemnation dependent upon Gods Grace, Mercy and Forgiveness?.
