Worldly gain vs godliness

1. Wrong!

Galatians 3:28-29 (CJB)
28 there is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor freeman, neither male nor female; for in union with the Messiah Yeshua, you are all one. 29 Also, if you belong to the Messiah, you are seed of Avraham and heirs according to the promise.

2. The promise belongs to us as much as it belongs to the Jews.

And lest mine own answer be too long.....
2 Corinthians 1:18-22 (CJB)
18 As surely as God is trustworthy, we don’t say “Yes” when we mean “No.” 19 For the Son of God, the Messiah Yeshua, who was proclaimed among you through us — that is, through me and Sila and Timothy — was not a yes-and-no man; on the contrary, with him it is always “Yes!” 20 For however many promises God has made, they all find their “Yes” in connection with him; that is why it is through him that we say the “Amen” when we give glory to God. 21 Moreover, it is God who sets both us and you in firm union with the Messiah; he has anointed us, 22 put his seal on us, and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee for the future.
1.vs 28 - Paul is clear to us and the Jews that as Christians we are no longer Jews or gentiles. We move on to a new covenant.

vs 29 God's promise to Abraham was: Gen 17:2 I will keep my solemn promise to you and give you more descendants than can be counted.

Paul is making the point that Jews need not worry about losing out on being part of God's chosen race (Keep the promise). The promise to Abraham was that he was chosen. His descendants were chosen. He was chosen for Jacob, for Joseph and Mary....He was chosen for Jesus. As Christians we are part of the promised descendants / chosen race.

You have to read this scripture with prejudice to come to your view of it.

2. Once more a prejudiced view to think this relates to earthly prosperity.

In all of Paul's teaching He did not preach a return to promises made to Jews. He preached a message of suffering on earth and promises of treasures beyond what we can imagine in heaven 1 Cor 2:9. Even Jesus preached against the common Jewish belief of treasures on earth when He made the effort to say to them Matt 6:19 ''Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth''.

I am assuming you understand that God chose Paul to reveal His truth and promises to us who are in Christ. So when Paul says 'all the promises of God' in vs 20 he is meaning the promises he has been speaking of. The revelation that God gave him. It is also important to understand Paul and Peter's clash in Gal 2:11-21.

Assuming this encompasses all His promises to the Jews is really a far stretch. Forgive-able only if you have no idea about living under the full curse of the law. That is the elephant in this room. I doubt any of you have actually tried to put yourselves in the shoes of a Jew growing up under the full curse of the law.

I pray the example I gave of a helper VS a wife earlier will hit home some day.

Please follow the discussion between Bendito and myself. I have already addressed the first verse.

The second.....really Ophel? You think Jesus is ever referring to money in your bank for the tenth pair of shoes when He says you will have everything you need. Sufficiency is scriptural. Prosperity is a maybe. Depends on Him needing us to reach the rich.

This is the prayer a Christian should pray on prosperity Prov 30:8 ''Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread''.

My point and most importantly, God's point is that we who are His receive from Him more than enough! The purpose of that blessing of abundance in ALL areas is that we are able to share with others the goodness of God! That you insist on ignorance of this very real aspect of the life we live in Christ and that you actively oppose it is appalling.

God offered Solomon wisdom or riches, because Solomon chose wisdom, God gave him both.

1 Chron 1:10; Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?”
1 Chron 1:11; God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king,
1 Chron 1:12; therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.”

1 Kings 3:9; So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”
1 Kings 3:10; The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this.
1 Kings 3:11; So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice,
1 Kings 3:12; I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.
1 Kings 3:13; Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.
1 Kings 3:14; And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.”

Of course Solomon wasn't very good at the last part of this (verse 14) and at the end he turned away to other gods and idols.

Matt 27:57; As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus.
Matt 27:58; Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.
Matt 27:59; Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
Matt 27:60; and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock

Jesus has at least one rich (friend?) follower.
(This was prophesied in Isa 53:9; )

In the book of Job, God takes away everything that Job has, but at the end, he gives Job back more than he started with.

Jesus says it's hard (but not impossible) for a rich man to enter heaven.
Matt 19:23-24; Mark 10:25; Luke 18:25;

Jesus says the deceitfulness of riches "choke" the word, and it becomes unfruitful to some. ( Mark 4:19; Luke 8:14; )

Luke 6:24; But woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving your comfort in full.

Luke 16:1-11; talks about being a good steard of the earthly riches God gives us.
Luke 16:11; Therefore if you have not been faithful n the use of unrighteous wealth, who will entrust true riches to you?

In the story of Lazarus and the rich man ( Luke 16:19-31; ) verse in verse 25 Abraham tells the rich man....
25: But Abraham said, 'Child remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazaurus bad things; but now he
is being comforted here, and you are in agony.

While there may not be anything wrong with having things/stuff... there is a lot wrong with the things having us.
So we are back were we started with the rich young ruler in Luke 18.

Luke 18:22; When Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
Luke 18:23; But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.
Luke 18:24; And Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!

Riches can be a snare to some....

1 Tim 6:6; But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.
1 Tim 6:7; For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.
1 Tim 6:8; If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.
1 Tim 6:9; But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.
1 Tim 6:10; For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
1 Tim 6:11; But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.
1 Tim 6:12; Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1 Tim 6:17; Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.
1 Tim 6:18; Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share,
1 Tim 6:19; storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed.

It seems to be a common theme, that if you are rich... you need to share the wealth, clothe the poor, feed the hungry, etc...

James 5:1; Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you.
James 5:2; Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten.
James 5:3; Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!
James 5:4; Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.
James 5:5; You have lived luxuriously on the earth and led a life of wanton pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.
James 5:6; You have condemned and put to death the righteous man; he does not resist you.

1 Jn 3:17; But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?

Some people ask to be rich for the wrong reasons.

James 4:1; What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members?
James 4:2; You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.
James 4:3; You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.
James 4:4; You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

In the story of the sheep and the goats ( Matt 25:34-46; )
The only thing that separated the sheep from the goats was whether they clothed the poor, clothes the hungry, and visited the sick.

Being rich/wealthy in itself is not a bad thing or a sin.... it's what we do with our riches that can be sinful.
Apparently it's harder for rich people to share and be good stewards, so be careful what you wish for.

Matt 16:26; For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
( Mark 8:36; )

Tell me how exactly do the promises work. How do you justify cherry picking the nice promises to the Jews and ignoring the bad?

The curse of the law that the Jews were under was the very fact that God worked on a promise basis with them.
Example: No tithe = God promises poverty, Tithe = God promises windows of heaven opened.

Can we get a YES and AMEN to stoning an adulterer to death?

Excellent post BAC.

My only two cent contribution is that ''abnormal'' blessing / prosperity on faithful Jews was God's will OT. The Jews needed to be wealthy to have a strong economy. To survive among the enemies all around them. But as I have said most importantly to show God is happy with those who are faithful.

Now God can do the same to us living in the NT. I am not arguing that. But it is not a promise. God knows we have so much more then paper money. We have the Holy Spirit. We have entered eternal life. We have been told that treasures beyond our imaginations are awaiting us. Most importantly we have been told that God wants to use us. God can use us a lot more then He could use the Jews. God using us equates to His will being done and not ours. This equates to our prosperity (We all wish that) taking a back seat.

So what part of 'He heals ALL of your diseases' could you possibly miss?

So now, I'm getting really tired of all your talk with NO scripture to back it up...I'm challenging YOU to put your scripture where your 'mouth' is.....Put up or, I hesitate to say, shut up. I'll say it this way Put up or shut up and learn... Show me scripture not conjecture!
Healing is definitely a lot more complex then prosperity. Discussing the scripture you gave will derail this thread. There is a lot more scripture you ignored. We need to look at all scripture before forming our belief.

KJ for a guy who "Pushes Christian 101" you sure are not thinking things through very well.
OK how can you expect a serious answer with a question like -How do you justify cherry picking the nice promises to the Jews and ignoring the bad?

Ok KJ since you asked let me tell you how this works.
In Deuteronomy God gives us a choice - you can find this in 3 chapters 11 and 29 and 30.

Now then WE CHOOSE either or - this means one or the other.
We choose Gods way then we follow His ways and inherit His promises.

Now then for your how can you pick good ones and leave out the bad ones - simple bro - it is called grace and as Galations 3:13 explains how we have been delivered from the curse of the law.
We become Born again by 1 Peter 1:23 We are born of incorruptible seed - the ever living Word of God.

SO therefore the bad ones as you call them are not ours to claim - The BLOOD took care of that.
Also your take on who the promises of God are for is well Not 100 percent correct bro. That may just be your down fall which causes you to believe everythng that happens is Gods will for you.

Have a very Blessed day my friend
God Bless

So in a nutshell what you are saying is that the curse of the law represents the bad promises. Jesus died for the bad promises.

Sorry Jim I can't accept that. You are making an elephant sized language blunder.

The curse of the law is 1. what the law could not achieve (curse) and 2. what came with living under the law (the state of the curse).

1. The law could not achieve reconciliation with God.
2. The law encompassed many good and bad promises.

You need to read Paul's wording as is. Or unbiased commentary.

That is quite an accusation. I judge myself in fear and trembling before God every night at my bedside.

I can tell you that scripture on John greeting Gauis, selecting only the sweet promises to the Jews, insinuating Jesus's death and ressurection was for financial gain and quite blatantly miss-quoting Paul is just not going to cut it for me. I will feel dirty before God.

If you have other scripture let me know.

The promises work by our choosing to avail ourselves of them! God's precious promises are to the believer, those who are followers of Jesus Christ and His word. You know, those who actually take up their crosses and follow Jesus---which means they surrender their will for His.

We have a God whose answer to us is "Yes" and "Amen"!

2 Corinthians 1:20-22 Phillips
Jesus Christ, the Son of God, whom Silvanus, Timothy and I have preached to you, is himself no doubtful quantity, he is the divine “yes”. Every promise of God finds its affirmative in him, and through him can be said the final amen, to the glory of God. We owe our position in Christ to this God of positive promise: it is he who has consecrated us to this special work, he who has given us the living guarantee of the Spirit in our hearts. Are we then the men to say one thing and mean another?

Amplified
For as many as are the promises of God, in Christ they are [all answered] “Yes.” So through Him we say our “Amen” to the glory of God.

.

The second.....really Ophel? You think Jesus is ever referring to money in your bank for the tenth pair of shoes when He says you will have everything you need. Sufficiency is scriptural. Prosperity is a maybe. Depends on Him needing us to reach the rich.

It's not about pecuniary wealth. It is about all-around wealth. God is the God of abundance. One of His names is The God of More Than Enough. Yes, He supplies all our needs, but He provides more for us because we are His kids and we are the ones in this world who are anointed to do His work in the world. We need abundance in all areas in order to share with those who lack.

This is the prayer a Christian should pray on prosperity Prov 30:8 ''Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread''.

God already does that for His children in this Covenant. He provides more than enough, praise Jesus. If all you want is enough for yourself, then you have become inward focused and not outward focused, and that does not bring glory to God.

See KJ that is your BIG problem - you dont want to learn or hear truth - all you want to do is be righ in your way of thinking. You claim this is for jews only and we are not super jews and on and on and on. Facr is Brother - those promises you reject could just change your life.

Any way I hope you will get serious about this and stop just making claims.
God Bless my friend
