Consider these three familiar base laws of human societies found in the King James Version of the Old Testament: 1) Thou shalt not kill; 2) Thou shalt not steal; 3) Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Then consider that you shouldn't kill, you shouldn't steal and you shouldn't lie, is moral instruction that virtually every well-meaning parent in the modern age, including atheistic parents, teach their children in the same or similar form.

A lot of confusion about the Bible today is due to the insistence of many to use the King James Version, which contains often difficult to understand and unduly harsh sounding language, bound to alienate many modern people for no good reason at all. And finally, consider that banning these or similar rules from public schools would quickly lead to a learning environment of disharmony, fear and chaos for our children.

It isn't possible to separate God's law from either American classrooms or from human society and, still have a society remaining. Like Paul says and Thomas Jefferson echoes in the Declaration, we ". . .show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness. . ." Consider how much less harsh these same laws could fairly be presented as 'you should not kill', 'you should not steal', etc. Isn't this how every caring parent wants their children to behave?

The New Testament teaches that all of the commandments are summed up in this, that we should love our neighbor as ourself Romans 13:8-10. Why do conservative Christians fight so hard for the so-called "ten commandments" to be posted in school classrooms, instead of fighting for Jesus' more simple and easier idea for children to follow, that we should treat other people the way we want to be treated Matthew 7:12?

False. You are isolating the second commandment from the first. In Matt 7:12 Jesus only quotes the second commandment,

He says the whole law can be summed up into two commandments - Matt 22:37-40.

1. Love God with all your heart soul mind and strength and,
2. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Now, respecting what God had to say to us in the OT is most certainly fulfilling the first.

It is very important to understand that unlike Christianity very wrongly promotes and practices, the New Testament is not about believing in or following a religion or about observing the Old Testament law. Rather, Jesus is about grace, mercy, love, peace and growing freedom: "Therefore, if the son makes you free, you shall be free, indeed" John 8:36.

The OT laws serve as an acid test of our Christianity. Example, if you are committing a sin that God ordained a graphic and violent death by stoning for in the OT, a God who does not change His mind like a human Num 23:19, you don't really need much IQ to know that you are not a Christian enroute to heaven one-day.

According to Jesus himself, he came "to heal the broken in heart, to proclaim deliverance to the prisoners. . .to free those who are oppressed" Luke 4:18. And if we have asked Jesus to forgive us for our sins, we "are not under law, but under grace" Romans 6:14. When was the last time you heard that in a conservative Christian 'church'?

You are under grace if you are a true Christian. A true Christian will not be able to live unrepentant in sin. You cannot love God at the level required for repentance and passing His judgement Jer 17:9-12 for forgiveness of sin if you commit mortal sins or continue in unrepentant venial sin.

Your post is true, but it is a half truth. Paul made certain to always remind us that we must not become too complacent and think that saying 'magical words' or having 'magical faith' saves us.

1 Cor 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
2 Cor 13:5 Examine yourselves whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.
Heb 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins.

So whilst I do agree with OSAS, we need to also acknowledge the many, I mean many, warnings in scripture for those who think they are saved and are not saved.

1 Cor 5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company if any man that is a brother so called be a fornicator or covetous or an idolater or a railer or a drunkard or an extortioner; with such a one do not to eat.

As an important side note, historically, it has been common practice to make the losers in war slaves of the victors. Thus the Greek for "prisoners" is likely referring to "slaves", that is, captives of war. When the Old Testament says that the Hebrews were led away into captivity, they became slaves in Babylon, as they were once slaves in Egypt. This was their penalty for idolatry and not obeying God.

God's law, as likewise the dictates of our own conscience, can be summed up in this, that we should love our neighbor as our self. Because God is love, what he wants is the best for our neighbor as well as our selves. Jesus says: "Therefore, whatever you want people to do to you, do also to them, for this is the law and the prophets" Matthew 7:12. There is no better idea in human history for positive change for humanity.

Under God's grace, we should use our freedom wisely to care about both our own selves and our neighbor. And as Jesus continues to speak today, ". . . you will know the truth and the truth will make you free. . . my way is easy and, my burden is light. . . this is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you."

I cringe when I hear any 'Christian' mention the word ''positive change''.

A positive change is hating what is evil and clinging to what is good Rom 12:9. Respecting God and obeying His commandments OT and NT John 14:15.

Those who mention 'positive' in Christian circles mostly teach 'feeling good' over 'being good'.

Freedom from punishment of sin is not freedom to sin.

Our perfectly just Creator has a law of love/life/light <--> sin/death/darkness which He by His very nature applies perfectly. A sin by a saved Christian doesn't magically disappear. God's wrath for that specific sin is poured upon Jesus. Like in physics where energy always goes somewhere, so does punishment for sin.

A saved Christian who loves Jesus/God as commanded by the first of the two great commandments is horrified at the idea of making Jesus suffer (1PET 3:18). Jesus' suffering was not only the physical crucifixion as the Romans crucified many so that isn't the unique part. He was forsaken by the Father and the punishment for the sins of every believing sinner was poured onto Jesus. That paying for sin happens in the spiritual world which every non-believer will unfortunately but justly experience after death and judgement.

God is omnipresent (present in all places at all times). The suffering of Jesus includes the wrath of God poured onto Jesus for the punishment for your next sin should you succumb to temptation later today. It's difficult for us non-omnipresent humans to fathom that the wrath of God poured onto Jesus includes punishment for a sin I may commit tomorrow. Understanding that we are adding to God's wrath, paired with our love of Jesus and the Holy Spirit's influence all greatly help in resisting temptation to sin.
