The word translated as "firmament" still found in many modern bibles literally means "expansion" in Hebrew Genesis 1:6. Genesis agrees in many distinct ways with modern 21st Century cosmology and, it does not claim that God creates species one at a time. Rather according to Genesis, the waters and later the land brought forth "life in abundance", in agreement with mainstream modern science Genesis 1.
There is more than one explanation for the "days" of creation. The Hebrew "yom" (also spelled "yowm") translated as day, is translated variously in the Bible as referring to a day, an indefinite period of time, a year, age, season and evermore. The book of Daniel as translated in KJV, uses the same phrase "evening and morning" to describe a period of time stretching more than 2,000 years, indicating that to the Hebrews, this was an acceptable way of describing a lengthy period of time. In Genesis, our sun isn't mentioned until the fourth "yom", indicating at least the first three 'days' have no 24hr basis.
This explanation gains more traction when discovering that Genesis 2:4 says, "this is the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created (the Hebrew means "generations", unlike some modern mistranslations). Since when does the word "generations" equal a literal week?
Gerald Schroeder, a former MIT/Princeton and exceptionally brilliant mathematician, has an entirely different explanation for how the "days" of creation can be both literal 24-hour days and lengthy periods of time. This is a rather intriguing theory based on a claim that time itself is stretching out along with the rest of the universal expansion.
This results in our view on earth of time looking backwards towards the beginning of the "big bang", being billions of years, while our Creator's view from before and at the beginning of time looking forward, is quite literally seven literal days, including a day of rest.
