What Does "Love" Mean in Greek?

Greek has eight different words for "love", including "agape", unconditional universal or God's love, "eros"; sexual love, "philia"; friendship or affectionate love, "storge"; familial love or the love between parents and children, "philautia"; self love, "xenia"; hospitality or love for strangers, "ludus"; flirtation or playful love and "pragma"; enduring or long lasting love.

Unfortunately, English only has one word to cover all those listed. This can be confusing to adults and even more so for children. Because of this, English speaking people tend to confuse love with sexual lust. And children hear such phrases as "making love", as if any of us could manufacture love. Unsurprisingly, this can lead to New Testament biblical confusion as well.

It is highly recommended that one read I Corinthians Chapter 13. There is no better description of real unconditional love in all of human literature. When the New Testament says "agape", we should understand what that means. God's love is free; no one can earn what God gives for free.
