We learn from reading Ephesians 5:1-6 that we are to be followers of God/Christ who walk in love, a love which comes from God and which is obedient to his commands. And we are to be becoming like Jesus in mind, character, and action, by the Spirit, in the power of God. We are no longer to be those who are living in immorality or impurity of any kind, which is idolatry. For anyone who is an immoral person, who is an idolater, does not have an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God, for the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. And we need to take this to heart.
“Therefore do not be partakers with them; for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. For this reason it says,
‘Awake, sleeper,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.’
“Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:7-16 NASB1995)
When we believe in Jesus Christ with biblical faith, which results in us dying to sin and walking in obedience to our Lord, by the grace of God, in the power of God, we are delivered out of our slavery (addiction) to sin so that we can now serve our Lord in obedience to his commands, empowered by God. For we were formerly darkness (sinful, wicked), but now we are Light (righteous, holy) in the Lord, if our faith is of God. Therefore, we are now to be those who are walking (in conduct, in practice) as children of Light (children of God, of truth, of righteousness, in all goodness), by God’s grace.
So, we are not to be partakers with those who are still of the darkness, and this includes many people who profess faith in Jesus Christ with their lips but who are still walking in sin, living in immorality, and who are not walking in obedience to our Lord and to his commands. Instead, we are to be those who are seeking to know the will of God for our lives and to do what pleases him. And, instead of us participating in the fruitless deeds of darkness, we are to be those who are exposing them for what they are by bringing them out into the light and talking about them, that we should not do them.
Too many people are not speaking out on these issues because they are being taught that to do so is “negative” and that we should always be “positive.” But actually hiding the truth from the people that they need to hear is negative, while speaking the truth to them that they need to hear, in love, is positive. Or they are being told that it is judgmental to speak on these issues, but the Bible speaks on these issues, and if we do not, then how will the people hear who are not students of the Scriptures? Yes, these are uncomfortable subjects, but the people need to hear the truth!
We need to let the people who profess faith in Jesus Christ, or who do not know Christ, know the truth of what God’s word says on these issues of immorality, idolatry, adultery, sexual addiction, lewdness, filthy speaking, and all sinful acts. For many are accepting a diluted and altered gospel message which does not teach the critical nature of us dying to sin and us walking in obedience to our Lord. But the Scriptures are clear that if sin is our practice, and not obedience to God, we will not inherit eternal life with God, regardless of what our lips have professed as faith in Jesus Christ.
So, we all now need to be spiritually awake and alert to what the Scriptures teach, in their appropriate context, for many people are depending on heaven being their eternal destiny when they die, based on lip service only, and they are not being taught that we will not inherit eternal life with God if sin is our practice, and not walks of obedience to our Lord. So, we all need to be careful how we walk, not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of the time we have left here on this earth, because the days are very evil. And this requires that sin is no longer our practice, but obedience to God is.

I come before You, Lord, my Savior,
With humble heart and crushed in spirit.
I bow before You, I implore You,
Heal my broken heart, I pray.
Love You, Jesus, Lord, my master,
You are the King of my heart.
Lord, purify my heart within me;
Sanctify me, whole within.
Oh, Lord, I long to obey fully
The words You’ve spoken through Your Spirit.
I pray You give me grace and mercy,
Strength and wisdom to obey.
Father God, my heart’s desire,
Won’t You set my heart on fire?
Lord, cleanse my heart of all that hinders
My walk with You, now I pray.
Oh, Jesus, Savior, full of mercy,
My heart cries out for understanding.
I want to follow You in all ways,
Never straying from Your truth.
Holy Spirit, come in power,
Fill me with Your love today.
Lord, mold and make me;
Your hands formed me;
Live Your life through me, I pray.
