It seems there are some Christians that don't believe the teachings of Jesus apply to them.
I have to admit, even I was a little surprised that any Christian would say that.
2 Jn 1:8; Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward.
2 Jn 1:9; Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.
2 Jn 1:10; If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting;
2 Jn 1:11; for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.
Verse 8 is often used to debate "once saved - always saved" but even it's only about full rewards vs partial rewards, it's possible to lose some things.
Verse 8... if anyone goes too far.... and does NOT live in the teachings of Jesus (Christ).. they don't have God in them. Plain and simple.
Anyone who does live in these teachings... has both the Father and the Son. Plain and simple.
Verse 10. If anyone does NOT bring this teaching (teachings of Jesus) do not receive him, do not greet them,
because if you do, you are participating in in their evil deeds. Plain and simple.
Of course 2nd John was written long after Jesus was resurrected and ascended back to Heaven.
1 Jn 2:1; My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;
1 Jn 2:2; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
1 Jn 2:3; By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.
1 Jn 2:4; The one who says, "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;
1 Jn 2:5; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him:
1 Jn 2:6; the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.
This is how we know Jesus - If we keep His commandments.
If anyone says I know Jesus, and does not keep His commandments, they are a liar. (the truth isn't in them).
But whoever keeps His word (his teachings) - has the love of God perfected in them, and by "this" we know
that we are in Him.
In the great commission (the one in Matthew) - Jesus has already been crucified and is risen.
He tells the eleven disciples (Judas is gone)...
Matt 28:19; "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
Matt 28:20; teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
The old testament is gone. The old covenant has been replaced. ..and yet Jesus says...
"teach them to observe (obey) all that I have commanded (taught) you.
It seems some people get offended when you say you have to follow the teachings of Jesus.
But those aren't my words... that's scripture. There are dozens more verses similar but I don't
have time tonight to get to them all....
.. to be continued ...
