I came across something interesting today. For a couple years now I've been searching, praying that God would give me an answer about Soul Sleep, whether it's true or false. I think he answered my prayers today. I just wanna double check with you guys though for confirmation.

1 Cor 15:54 - Death is swallowed up in victory / 2 Cor 5:4 - That mortality may be swallowed up in life

I noticed these two scriptures both have "swallowed up" in it, and that 1 Cor 15:52 does give us a timeline. But what really caught my eye is that 2 Cor 5:4 precedes 2 Cor 5:8, in which many people believe 2 Cor 5:8 means we will be with the Lord immediately. But scripture tells me it's the first resurrection. - ATP

At the resurrection the one's that died in Jesus, God will bring with him. 1 Thessalonians 4:14
So when we die or our body dies, then our spirit returns to God. The spirit is what we really are, with a flesh body. Until the resurrection, then we will have a spiritual body ( heavenly body )for our spirit. For we have borne the earthy image , we will also bear the image of the heavenly. 1 Corinthians 15:49

So what borne the earthly image ( our spirit) what will bear the image of the heavenly ( our spirit )

The body (flesh) is dead without the spirit. James 2:26
So if the spirit doesn't leave our body we could not die. Jesus said Father into thy hands I commend my spirit. Also Stephen calling upon God, said Lord Jesus receive my spirit. Acts 7:59
Ananias and Sapphira gave up the ghost and fell down dead. Acts 5:1-10
So we can see to die , the spirit leaves the body.
So the spirit goes to be with the Lord.
To be absence from the body is to be present with the Lord.
This is how in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 God will bring those who sleep ( dead) in Jesus with him.
He brings the spirit of those who sleep in Jesus.
Maybe this will help. God bless.

If that were true, there would be no bodies in graves right now. And there would be no reason for 1 Thess 4:16.

I think you may have
misunderstood me. I didn't say the
body was with the Lord, but our
spirit, Which is the inward man,
that is what is with the Lord. The
body returns to the dust of the
earth, from which it came.
James said the body is dead
without the spirit. So if that's not
true, I guess James was not telling
the truth. But I do believe he was
telling truth.

It's ok. It's a complicated subject. Ok, so you believe our spirits get temporary bodies in heaven before resurrection, or are we like ghost figures. - ATP

I believe we will be spirit without a body. Till the resurrection, then we receive
a spiritual body. When we are spirit without the body
fleshly eyes can't see us. God is a Spirit, and no man has
seen him at anytime. But spirit can see spirit.

him at anytime.

I've been taught for years that ghosts don't exist,
and that strange occurrences are because of fallen angels.
Do you believe we roam around as ghosts on this old earth after we die?
Do you have scripture to support all this.

Out of the body is to be in the spirit with the Lord! That is if you are a born again Christian.
2 Corinthians 5:8 .....We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

But how do we exist without the body is what I'm wondering.

This is where 2 Corinthians 5:8 comes into play. Paul was saying, as a Christian, it is better to have died and spiritually be out of your body and with the lord. This is the best you can have until Jesus gathers his church and the dead ( bodied / dust ) are raised first to be with the Lord in your new Spiritual Body. The graves are full of bodies, The unsaved remain because their spirits are in hell. The bodies of saved Christians will be raised imperishable for all eternity in heaven.

But 2 Cor 5:8 is part of that section where they mention mortality, similar to 1 Cor 15:52-54. The only difference is that 1 Cor 15:52 tells us of the first resurrection. Coincidence or not?

Don't you know that you are body and spirit?
  • If you are a Christian, you already have the spirit of God living in you. If you die before resurrection, your spirit leaves your body and is with the lord in heaven and your body remains behind.
  • If you are not a Christian, you do not have the spirit of God in you. If you die, your body remains on earth forever and your spirit is in hell.

That doesn't really answer my question though.
For example, the body consists of a brain, heart, ears, eyes, hands and feet.
You need these things to function as a person.
How do we obtain these things with just the spirit.

What?
  • 2 Cor 5:8 is not a happening, it is a statement....Paul was saying a "what if", he , at that point, before resurrection, he would rather be dead, and his spirit out of the body and with the lord. This is essential, Paul was telling us that, right now, if you die, don't worry , you will be with the Lord!
  • 1 Cor 15: 52-54...is talking about the actual act of resurrection, when the body is joined with the spirit to form the Spiritual or Heavenly body!!!

Can you explain how Mary exactly got pregnant?
Can you explain exactly how the 10 disasters in Exodus occurred?
Can you explain exactly how Moses split the sea or got water out of a rock?
Can you explain any of Jesus's miracles?
All you ask is just another of God's miracles, you have to accept it by faith, not by understanding!

What?

Yeah but 2 Cor 5:4 mentions mortality and 1 Cor 15:54 also mentions mortality. 1 Cor 5:8 happens to be in the same section as all of this. Not to mention 2 Cor 5:1-10 title is 'Awaiting the new body'.

That is a good point.

But if death is swallowed up and life begins at the resurrection, then what are we doing between death and resurrection, resting or floating?

Read Acts 5:1-10 verse 5 says Ananias gave up the ghost.
Verse 10 says she (Sapphira ) fell
down and yielded up the ghost.
Ghost is another word for spirit. I believe to be absent from our body is to present with Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8

You have to work it out yourself.
Do you know for sure you are saved; can you remember when it happened and under what circumstances?
Much of your understanding comes from faith and that comes from Christ in you. Is he in you?

But if death is swallowed up and life begins at the resurrection, then what are we doing between death and resurrection, resting or floating?
That is what norapture and I have been telling you...you might be resting, you might be floating, who knows? What you can know is that you are with the Lord!
