So.....How Do You Observe YOUR Sabbath Day?

Moses was the arbitrator of the covenant between God and Israel and the Law was given as the guide for Israel to remain in obedience to God.

Jesus is the arbitrator of the new and better/greater covenant with mankind and HolySpirit was/is given as our guide to remain in obedience to Father.

In the old covenant, Israel had many duties and responsibilities in maintaining their covenant with God. There of course was the law, ordinances and feasts and Sabbaths, the priesthood, the temple, the sacrificial regiment and liturgy, the levy or tithing system.

In the new covenant, our responsibilities are to trust and rest in Christ's work at the cross, love one another (including enemies) and obey HolySpirit. We are no longer regulated from the outside but transformed on the inside, We all are now the priests, the temple, the sacrifice, the liturgy and the levy system by Christ working in us and we can finally enter into rest with God our Father.

I thought Christianity was based on the Bible? It was those very burdensome additional traditions as detailed in the Mishnah that Jesus came to do away with. Jesus taught how to keep the Sabbath. Walk as He walked, not as the Rabbis.

I am only answering this statement of the originator of this thread...

The Jews were sent into captivity because of their endless problems with idolatry. The 70 years captivity seems to have cured this problem – or did it? No, they just came back with a new idol – the Law. After this they took the basic law of Moses and wrote so many sub rules in order to make absolutely sure that they never could possibly break the law again. They went from one extreme to another. These are what is known as the “oral law” - which is not scripture. To me it is the doctrines of men and were extremely burdensome to the Jewish populace.


My point is that if you think you are keeping the Sabbath in the manner that the people did in Jesus' day you are mistaken. When I was young we kept the Sabbath – Sunday. We didn't work on that day and that was about it. A far cry from what the Jews of Jesus' day were forced to do.

The Mishnah is man's attempt at narrowing the original command to protect it from being broken. They thought that they could legislate morality and religious fervor. It backfired and they created a broken system with loopholes and a structure that refused to help people in their struggles. These are the 'traditions and commands of men' that Jesus frequently fought against. It is not the same as the 'old covenant' laws, it is additions to them that were the problem.

If that is your overall view of the Mishnah I would say that you have never read it. I find it of extreme value for its historical record.

Calm down. That's what I was implying. I do not advocate the wholesale usage of Talmud in the life of the believer. There are, however, Talmudic legislations that Messiah lived out and I believe it is of great importance for us to know what we can from it.
