I know the subject has been pounded a few times but I just want to look at some things that are important and biblical, and sometimes plainly overlooked.
Judas Iscariot who was chosen by Jesus to become a apostle, was not chosen to become the traitor.
Just like the brother of Isaac, he was not chosen to lose his place as leader of the family. That was designated to be for the first born, and by the promptings of his mother, Isaac stole it from him.
All these things have one thing in common. It is free will. It is something that is chosen.
I've always found it very interesting, that of all of the Apostles, Judas is the only apostle whose full name we hear often in the scripture. God is making a point to let us know it is Judas that He is talking about, Judas Iscariot.
Judas being one of the 12 is sent out to the town's to cast out demons and to heal the sick. ( we know that in the scripture that only a person who is with the Lord Jesus can remove demons. As Jesus said A house divided against itself cannot stand. ) so the apostles are sent out two by two, out to the towns to do the work that Jesus has set before them. In returning they are so excited, they are talking about all that was accomplished but Jesus stops them and saying . " rejoice rather that your names are written in heaven" . Jesus was not saying only Peter, only Paul, only John, but he was talking to all of them including Judas Iscariot and His Name Was Written In Heaven.
As time went on Judas Pride took him over and we know how pride is as far as how it affects a person because Pride destroys faith. And pride is the one thing that will remove a person from heaven if not dealt with.
We can see the result of pride in Moses when he struck the rock two times instead of once.
Or the prophet who is told not to talk to anyone but to deliver God's message. And in pride stopped to talk to one person which cost him his life.
Pride destroys our obedience to God. And we wilfully do it..
This is what happened with Judas Iscariot he willfully did what he chose to do which was betrayed Jesus, and in so doing lost his salvation
