I will never leave you or forsake you. There are few verses more quoted out of context than this one.
Heb 13:5; Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,"
Heb 13:6; so that we confidently say, "THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT WILL MAN DO TO ME?"
This verse starts off talking about being "free from the love of money" and being content with what you have.
This is similar to the end of Matthew 6.
Matt 6:26; "Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?
Matt 6:27; "And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?
Matt 6:28; "And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin,
Matt 6:29; yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.
Matt 6:30; "But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith!
Matt 6:31; "Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?'
Matt 6:32; "For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
Matt 6:33; "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Matt 6:34; "So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Just like in Hebrews, it's saying don't put your faith in money, God will take care of you. He won't leave you or forsake you.
... for He Himself has said .... Where did He say this? In the new testament? No you won't find it anywhere else in the new testament.
Deut 31:6; "Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you."
Deut 31:8; "The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed."
God was with the Jews while they were fleeing Egypt and wandering through the desert. He never left them or forsook them.
He took care of them. He fed them manna. He made sure their clothes and sandals never wore out.
Deut 29:5; "I have led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandal has not worn out on your foot.
Deut 8:4; "Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years.
Exod 16:4; Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My instruction.
Exod 16:14; When the layer of dew evaporated, behold, on the surface of the wilderness there was a fine flake-like thing, fine as the frost on the ground.
Exod 16:15; When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, "What is it?" For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, "It is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat.
They had no reason to "love money". God was with them. He made sure they were clothed and fed.... for forty years!!!
But yet, even though God never left them or forsook them....
Neh 9:9; "You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, And heard their cry by the Red Sea.
Neh 9:10; "Then You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, Against all his servants and all the people of his land; For You knew that they acted arrogantly toward them, And made a name for Yourself as it is this day.
Neh 9:12; "And with a pillar of cloud You led them by day, And with a pillar of fire by night To light for them the way In which they were to go.
Neh 9:15; "You provided bread from heaven for them for their hunger, You brought forth water from a rock for them for their thirst, And You told them to enter in order to possess The land which You swore to give them.
and yet even though God did all of this for them, and was with them, and provided for them...
Neh 9:16; "But they, our fathers, acted arrogantly; They became stubborn and would not listen to Your commandments.
Neh 9:17; "They refused to listen, And did not remember Your wondrous deeds which You had performed among them; So they became stubborn and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But You are a God of forgiveness, Gracious and compassionate, Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness; And You did not forsake them.
Neh 9:18; "Even when they made for themselves A calf of molten metal And said, 'This is your God Who brought you up from Egypt,' And committed great blasphemies,
Even though all of this God did not forsake them.
Neh 9:19; You, in Your great compassion, Did not forsake them in the wilderness; The pillar of cloud did not leave them by day, To guide them on their way, Nor the pillar of fire by night, to light for them the way in which they were to go.
Neh 9:20; "You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them, Your manna You did not withhold from their mouth, And You gave them water for their thirst.
Neh 9:21; "Indeed, forty years You provided for them in the wilderness and they were not in want; Their clothes did not wear out, nor did their feet swell.
Neh 9:28; "But as soon as they had rest, they did evil again before You; Therefore You abandoned them to the hand of their enemies, so that they ruled over them. When they cried again to You, You heard from heaven, And many times You rescued them according to Your compassion
Neh 9:31; "Nevertheless, in Your great compassion You did not make an end of them or forsake them, For You are a gracious and compassionate God.
Even though God never left them or forsook them, they left Him many times and forsook Him many times.
Neh 9:35; "But they, in their own kingdom, With Your great goodness which You gave them, With the broad and rich land which You set before them, Did not serve You or turn from their evil deeds.
The bottom line here is... even though God was with them, even though He never left them or forsook them, they forsook Him!
He never left them for the forty years they were in the wilderness (and even past this time) but they made a golden calf. They grumbled.
As a result of this 23,000 of them were killed in one day!! No one from that generation made it into the "promised land".
Just because God never leaves you or forsakes you is no guarantee that you will make it to the "promised land".
