CHRISTIAN: Paul never once refers to himself as a 'christian', while at least five times in the New Testament he refers to himself as a follower of "the way". The way was considered to be a revolutionary new way of life, centered on the true communism of sharing all things in common and distributing to each according to need, the opposite of both Roman, Greek and modern capitalist societies.

Unlike in the 21st Century, First Century followers of Jesus largely remained among the poor. Paul being among the very poorest of the poor, was entrusted to carry the "purse" for the poor, donated by people who themselves were generally poor.

The term "christian" appears to have originally been a derogatory term invented by outsiders, loosely comparable to the N-word in modern American society. According to Acts 11:26, the term was first used in Antioch. When a Roman ruler says to Paul, "you almost persuade me to become a christian", Paul replies as follows: "I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today, might become both almost and altogether such as I am, except for these chains" Acts 26:28-29.

Note that Paul seems to deliberately avoid using the term 'christian' in his response. Perhaps he suspected even then it was being used to place the followers of Jesus back under religious laws, rules and vain traditions, something Paul utterly opposed.

No one knows why Paul doesn't use the term christian in his response to King Agrippa, but we do know based on Romans, Galatians and other writings, that Paul strongly opposes forms of outward religion, insisting that those who have the spirit of Jesus within them, "are not under law, but under grace" Romans 6:14; see also Galatians 5:18. Paul may have been adverse to referring to himself as a christian for similar reasons that people today resent being referred to by a racial or other derogatory slur.

It appears being branded as a "christian" was eventually adopted as a badge of honor, signifying that one was willing to endure ridicule and ostracization from regular Jewish, Roman and Greek society, was willing to adopt a completely different type of lifestyle perhaps seemingly 'strange' to their First Century peers (as it would likewise appear very different today in the modern-day capitalist United States). And, one was willing to risk imprisonment and extreme forms of torture and execution, which could also apply to spouse, children, extended household and friends.

The bad habit of seeking to accumulate more than we need seems to be as old as civilization itself, for as Ecclesiastes says, "there is nothing new under the sun." And as Paul writes, "the love of wealth is the root of all evil."

It is perhaps worthy to note, that even as late as the events in Acts 19, followers of Jesus are not referred to as followers of Christianity, as if Jesus was ever viewed by his early followers as having come to establish a new religion. Rather in Acts 19:23 we find followers of Jesus, including Luke the author of Acts, viewing themselves as being followers of "the way": "And about that time there arose a great commotion about the way."

Also, towards the end of the record of his life, Paul refers to "this way" in Acts 22:4 and "the way" in Acts 24:14. This indicates that perhaps many followers of Jesus considered themselves to be followers of "the way" until after the authors of the Bible had all passed on.

Suffice it to say, both Stephen and Paul in Acts insist that God does not live in temples made with hands, Paul in particular being utterly scornful of what today is commonly understood as "religion". If when we hear the word "religion", we think in our minds of dependence on God's help to in turn, freely "love one another", then the New Testament is indeed a highly religious collection.

However, if when we hear the word "religion", we think in our minds of institutionalized religion, temples and church structures, priests and preachers parading around in garments differing in any way from how regular average people normally dress in their leisure and, an organization collecting huge sums for any reason other than helping the sick and poor and otherwise oppressed, then the New Testament remains among the least religious body of works in the history of humanity.

While many people today call themselves Christians, the New Testament reference to "christian" is worlds different than modern day Christianity in all of it's insidious extreme twisting of the truth. It is not that modern Christianity needs tweaking and correcting but rather, it is completely and entirely very much in the way of the true "sinners" and average people friendly message of Jesus. Modern Christians can learn from the portrait of Jesus in the New Testament that, if it ain't gladly heard and received by the sinners and average people of human society, it ain't remotely correct.

Other than it's use in Acts twice as noted, the word "christian" only appears one other time in the Bible: "Yet if anyone suffers as a christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter" 1 Peter 4:16. One should never confuse what it meant to be called a 'christian' at the time this was written, with well-fed and palatially housed televised frauds, clothed in clownish so-called 'sacred' attire and flying around in personal jets, nor confuse this with any form of modern Christianity.

Meanwhile, such frauds extract large sums from well-meaning common people with false promises of a so-called "prosperity gospel". And, rather than giving such sums to help widows, orphans and the poor, as both James and Jesus himself teach us to do, using them instead to live in opulent extravagance. Such liars truly personify biblical terms like "ungodly" and "hypocrite" in about the worst possible way imaginable.

Use of the term "christian" in the New Testament can be found here Acts 11:26, here Acts 26:28 and here 1 Peter 4:16. James may also refer to this word, but he does not do so directly. Even though the term originated as early as Acts 11, Luke, Paul and other followers of Jesus in their group continue to refer to themselves as followers of "the way" throughout the entirety of Acts.

Be not deceived, for the word "Christianity" is not anywhere in the Bible. And there is zero historical or other evidence that Jesus is the founder of either Christianity or any other religion. Rather, as Jesus says in John 10:10, "the thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly."

May Jesus fill us with his wisdom and humor.

This is a ridiculous argument.

We are followers of Jesus, the Christ. We call ourselves Christians and refer to our way of thinking as Christianity.

Nothing more needs to be said

The way was considered to be a revolutionary new way of life, centered on the true communism
Communism is anti personal property and anti God. God says "thou shalt not steal" which supports and defends personal property. Abraham was rich and Job was rich. Jesus arranged His burial and the most important thing ever, His resurrection, to be in a a rich man of Arimathaea named Joseph's tomb.

I also hate mega churches that love money instead of God. So Amen to that part.

Many who call themselves 'christians' today are followers of Donald Trump and the GOP, who promote the opposite of the teaching of Jesus. Believing and following Jesus means everything to God. Believing and following Christianity is worthless, useless and will not change a single moral or other hair on your head.

Christianity does not equal Jesus, any more than Trump equals Truth.

I was wondering so much if you wouldn't mind calling everyone here what do you think Christianity is. Or what is it to follow Jesus?

Following Jesus means doing what he says, not just claiming to believe in him. Of course, none of us can do what God wants all of the time, but promoting the opposite of what Jesus says, is inexcusable.

Amen to that. I agree that churches that grow big always stray from doing God's will to please existing donors and to attract new ones.

A large church doesn't fit on the narrow path. :p

Modern Christianity is filled with contradictions, confusion, disagreement among various denominations and gross hypocrisy. Often endorsing wicked politicians and evil political agenda; dressing in clown outfits, wasting billions of dollars an expensive religious buildings, when a relatively inexpensive, square or rectangular non-descript building would do just fine.

In the New Testament, there is no preacher or anyone else who leads the assembly other than Jesus. Jesus is the leader, everyone else is a follower. Assemblies are entirely spontaneous, there was no sermon and no planned program. Each one spoke or sang as they were so moved. Modern churches don't do anything like that and they can't even get the name right. Jesus called his people his "assembly", not his church.

It would be great if everyone would receive the Holy Spirit. And still those who are filled with the Holy Spirit would still preach, because you cannot help but preach. It is a fire that burns within you the fire is the fire of the Holy Spirit. Paul the Apostle of God, he had the holy spirit in him and he still does today. He is constantly preaching the word of God even though he is in heaven.

When the fire of God, when the Holy Spirit fills you you cannot help but preach.

The word "Christian" means "Christ-like". It was the nonbelievers who called followers of Jesus "Christians" because their actions were "Christ-like"

The word "Christian" means "Christ-like". It was the nonbelievers who called followers of Jesus "Christians" because their actions were "Christ-like"
Most historians believe it was a deliberate slur made by outsiders. The idea that Christian means "Christ-like" is apparently a fairly recent historical invention.

Luke, Paul and their companions throughout Acts refer to themselves as followers of "the way". Paul appears to deliberately avoid calling himself a Christian when asked by Agrippa, a Roman ruler.

Then Agrippa said to Paul, “You almost persuade me to become a Christian.”

And Paul said, “I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today, might become both almost and altogether such as I am, except for these chains.” --Acts 26:29

Paul continues to refer to himself as a follower of "the way" throughout Acts, perhaps finding the term "christian" offensive.

The New Testament clearly supports sharing property, not hording property; the New Testament is the opposite of capitalism, as can clearly be seen by these quotes below:

Jesus says, "woe to the rich. . ."

Jesus says, "give and it shall be given to you."

Acts says, "It is better to give than to receive."

This is what the Old Testament says about Godly economics: 10% of our Gross National Product annually should go to helping immigrants, the sick, the homeless and poor.

This is what the New Testament says about Godly economics:

"Now all who believed were together and had all things in common and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need." -- Acts chapter 2

"For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened; but by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may supply their lack, that their abundance also may supply your lack—that there may be equality. As it is written, “He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.” --2 Corinthians chapter 8

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, "to each according to need" is the foundation of socialism.

We live in an unGodly capitalist nation that encourages human greed and allows some people to own billions and many houses, while others who work harder than those with billions end up homeless and destitute.

Yes the bible is against the love of money. It is however practicing capitalism throughout.
Yes the bible is against gluttony. It is however practicing eating throughout.

Un-watching thread.

Since Trump took office, the GOP has given massive tax breaks to the wealthy and large corporations, added over 4 trillion to the national debt, invaded Venezuela while leaving similar corrupt leadership, murdered tens of thousands of Iranians in an illegal war not approved by Congress, murdered fishermen without trial or any proof they are carrying drugs, is currently starving the Cuban population,

Over 750,000 people including a great many children have already died because of defunding of foreign aid and the projected total amount exceeds 9 million at least. The recent spread of Ebola in large part occurred because necessary protective equipment for medical workers once provided by US AID was no longer available. US Aid provided food for starving people, drugs for malaria and drugs from babies born with AIDS.

Medical experts in the U.S. have projected that 50,000 Americans will die because of GOP healthcare cuts alone, including disabled people and many children. Trump deliberately defunded cancer research and other medical research. Trump is now trying to institutionalize disable people who are much better off living at home. Many of the disabled work and it is less expensive for the government to provide in-home service than to institutionalize a disabled person. I personally know disabled people who would rather die than be put in an institution.

The GOP in Congress and Trump have taken away a trillion dollars funding for healthcare, defunded foreign aid, affordable housing, food banks, food for school lunches, has fired tens of thousands of dedicated government workers, including top ranking FBI, Homeland Security and other agents, has gutted the department of education, has allowed mass pollution of our air, water and soil to become significantly worse, has gutted the consumer protection bureau, fired top military leaders who are Black and/or female while refusing to promote recommended highly qualified women and Black people, pushed the Supreme Court to gut the voting rights act while pushing states to gerrymander, to name just a few of the great evil the Trump administration has done and the GOP has either endorsed or sat back and allowed him to do so. Trump is doing everything he possibly can to cheat in the upcoming election, because the GOP knows they can't win on their record.

The GOP has continued the massive Epstein file coverup, redacting the names of pedophiles while publishing the names and sensitive information of victims, just yesterday Trump tried to prevent New Mexico from investigating Epstein's ranch. Trump stooges have been appointed to high level cabinet positions and agencies who aren't remotely qualified for the job, like his personal lawyer Todd Blanch, Cash Patel and RFK, Jr. Just yesterday, Trump's head of the treasury was labeled the most corrupt Treasury leader in history. Trump sued his own government and he and his family have been granted immunity from IRS prosecution, even though it is well-documented he reportedly owes 100 million in back taxes and it is well-documented he grossly cheats on his taxes.

And perhaps the most wicked thing is the ongoing mass incarceration of poor, hard-working immigrants, placing them in what amounts to modern day concentration camps, denying them hearings, serving food with worms in it, filthy water and horrid living conditions, some have no showers, denying necessary medical care, raping females, torturing males, refusing to allow members of Congress to visit spontaneously like they are supposed to do by law. Reports by credible sources say 70 percent of the tens of thousands incarcerated have no criminal record. Trump has illegally deported thousands who were here legally on asylum, is attempting to deport hundreds of thousands of other immigrants who are here legally with green cards and work permits.

And then there is the GOP complete disregard for the Constitution and the law. Trump breaks the law on almost a daily and ongoing basis, deliberately disobeying court orders, calling his perceived enemies all manner of evil names, has tried to subvert birthright citizenship illegally by going around the Constitution and the courts. Trump has openly threatened to attack Greenland and Canada, a direct violation of U.S. law without congressional approval and a direct violation of international law.

And the myriad of GOP lies, constantly barraging the American people daily with lies, misrepresentation of obvious facts and spreading massive propaganda throughout right-wing media. Trump has sued media corporations, violating First Amendment rights constantly. Trump has constantly threatened states illegally and taken away funding already approved by Congress. He defunded and fired many from FEMA and the U.S. is now ill-prepared for the next major disaster. Trump defunded and disbanded weather experts who warn Americans of hurricanes, floods and other pending disasters.

In case you are unaware, whether or not there is global warming is irrelevant. The fact is, pollution is very harmful for people, including especially children. Trump has greatly added to mass pollution by his EPA stooge defunding necessary pollution regulation. Pollution kills more people annually than heart disease, murder, malaria, cancer, traffic accidents or any other single thing. It harms every human organ including especially the lungs and the brain and especially, the developing brains of children.

Trump has done the opposite of what he promised on the campaign trail, while profiting billions of dollars off of the presidency. This is a direct violation of his Constitutional oath and the law. The Constitution forbids presidents from accepting gifts from foreign governments like his Boeing Jet, refurbished at taxpayer expense, forbids pay-to-play which Trump repeatedly has done in plain public sight.

Trump has pardoned some of the worst criminals in U.S. history, many who have gone on to commit more crimes once released, including a man who raped two twelve-year-old children, another who scammed Americans out of hundreds of millions and another who may be the largest drug dealer in U.S. history, responsible for billions in cocaine and other drugs flowing into America that greatly harmed U.S. citizens. There is ample evidence that such pardons were paid for by campaign donations and other means.

Trump's children have stock in or directly own companies that have received massive mostly no-bid government contracts. Much of the wealth of Elon Musk is tied up in government contracts approved by Trump, many no-bid contracts. No-bid contracts are forbidden by law. Trump's crypto schemes have netted him over a billion, while costing investors over 3 billion.

And the above is only part of GOP and Trump corruption. It would quite literally take many pages, just to list the documented lies Trump has told the American people. The GOP is totally responsible for what Trump does because they have assented to his corruption or else, refused to reign him in by Congressional action, where they have the majority.

If the GOP was any good at all, they would have impeached Trump long ago.

Do you really think this is what God wants???
