There is good news for all you coffee drinkers out there. Coffee isn't merely that jolt you depend on to get your day started, it provides numerous health benefits as well. Much like alcohol and chocolate, coffee has a historically bad reputation. Fortunately, an increasing number of recent studies have begun to show its potential health benefits.

Antioxidants and Nutrients

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson, Joy Dubost, claims that based on the amount of coffee consumed by Americans, it is one of the greatest sources of antioxidants their diet. In addition to antioxidants, coffee contains the essential nutrients chromium, potassium, niacin, vitamin E and magnesium. Coffee consumption alone can supply up to 8 percent of your chromium needs. Chromium plays a role in controlling your blood sugar and possibly lowering your LDL, or bad cholesterol. Much like tea, coffee contains plant chemical compounds, particularly flavonoids, which have been linked to a reduced risk of chronic disease.

Improved Cognitive Function

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' spokeswoman and registered dietitian Joan Salge Blake says she considers increased cognitive function to be one of coffee's healthiest perks. A study published in the "American Journal of Epidemiology" in 2002 found that current coffee consumption, as well lifetime caffeine use, may be correlated to better performance on cognitive tests among women. For men, coffee consumption is linked to slower cognitive decline. Overall, coffee may reduce both cognitive and motor deficiency associated with aging.

Reduced Diabetes Risk

Coffee contains ingredients that both lower your blood sugar and increase your resting metabolic rate, reducing your risk for diabetes. Additionally, nutrients in coffee help your body use insulin, a hormone necessary to use and store sugar you get from food. Substantial coffee drinkers, of either regular or decaffeinated coffee, could be half as likely to develop diabetes than those who drink little to no coffee. The association between coffee intake and diabetes proposes that each cup of coffee you drink per day, could result in a 7 percent reduction in your risk for developing diabetes.

Anti-Cancer Properties

The National Cancer Institute has reported that men who drink coffee regularly are less likely to develop prostate cancer. A 60 percent reduction in the risk of developing lethal prostate cancer was found in men who drank 6 or more cups of coffee per day. Even 1 to 3 cups of coffee reduced the risk. Four or more cups of coffee per day have also been shown to reduce the incidence of colon cancer. Furthermore, researchers discovered that people who drink coffee are 50 percent less likely to develop liver cancer than their non-drinking counterparts. Additional studies have linked coffee consumption to lower rates of breast and rectal cancer.

I printed this out and I'm posting it on a bulletin board at work, which just happens to be by the coffee pots!
Thank-you brother for sharing it!

Huh, remember not long ago the warnings about more than 2 cups a day? Watch out for what else in that cup. My daughter fills it half full of sugary vanilla creme, drinking a 12 cup pot a day, then is mystified why she is gaining weight. I drink a half dozen cups a day when around the house, black with a few drops of Stevia to cut the chickory bitter. Going to that coffee drops my blood sugar 10-20 points through the day, keeping me off metformin.

I got mine! It'll float a mule shoe.

I used to drink it thick enough to climb outta my cup, folks warned me. That well seasoned 50 year old cup was really special from Navy days, never had soap in it, just a bed of tar in the bottom. Grand-daughter put it in the dish washer last year. "It was filthy, Pappy" :O

Float a mule shoe! It's been half a century since hearing that.

is this the Birds of a Feather page?

as for your mules shoe, my semi fossilized friend from Canada, you can enjoy that if you like the extra flavor but I'll stick with the coffee as is thanks!

on a side note, they say that coffee is good for an enema! Sounds different way to partake. Wonder if that is with or without sugar?

Hmmm I think I'll stick to taking it orally. LOLOL I like that semi-fossilized part.

Gentlepersons,

I have been considering my words written so far in this thread and am somewhat convicted about both my frivolity and my excessive coffee intake.

One thing that the lord in His Grace has shown me is that over the years and zillions of coffees, seldom have i really given thanks for my cuppa but have gulped it down as a glutton, for which I am ashamed.

Methinks I shall make an effort to quit coffee and wait on the Lord if I am to resume or partake again. I am not making any vows but seriously think i have had more than my quota and that with reckless greed. I shall be cutting down and giving my addicted bady a chance to adapt and I am sure that I shall get appropriate encouragement from a close friend of mine.
Yes, coffee is nice but do i really need it?

I did at least 45 cups a day equivalent using a very large thing with a handle for at least 15 years and cut down to around 30 for a while.... stupid... that was about 10 years ago... that's a LOT of coffee and I have to ask, "why?"

Forgive me if my words prior to this post have stirred you on in any way to pat yourselves on the back for your coffee habits

Jesus is Lord

Bless you all ....><>

Dear friend You DO what you are called or feel called to do. I'm sure you have not done any damage here. I like to go by the axiom....I'd rather err on the side of obedience......

Let your moderation be known unto all men
Philippians 4:5

Firstly gentlemen I am in agreement that there are health benefits associated with coffee.
Thank you for posting the thread @Chad

However when moderation is taken over by addiction all those benefits are thwarted.

Why? Because caffeine in those ridiculous amounts is addictive.
All those health benefits are totally outweighed

Sadly one becomes a slave to the addiction

Jesus is Lord

Is He?
If so take Him at His word.
You won't get rid of your "demons" if you keep feeding them.

I pray that out of the riches of His glory He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being,
Ephesians 3:16

Brother, I read paragraph #3 and thought "Someone needs to write a music score for that. Break out the banjos and a mandolin! "

I worked in an open office situation for a year on a government project near Boston MA where people who tried to cut back or even quit coffee became social outcasts over their new-found obnoxiousness, yet it's nearly impossible to fire a G employee who bothers everyone when changing a habit, like smoking. It was best to keep the pot going all day, every day, and some kept their own pot on their desk in case the main pots went dry. It does stimulate work effort, social skill, wakefulness, mood, etc. , Some people just can't adjust and produce without it if they have used it as a stimulant all their lives. I like the Cajun blends (Creole coffee with chickory, Kenner, LA my favorite) that helps keep consumption to 3-4 cups, any more tending to deaden taste buds, so make cup #5 just something hot. My wife has her own pot of Folgers Classic, drinks about 30 oz a morning.

I remember drinking a gallon of Navy coffee a night on watch over U-2 planes parked at Pt. Mugu NAS in 68-69, so I could be sure to spot any Ruskies trying to infiltrate. None tried to my knowledge, so I guess the coffee worked! I burned out on coffee for several years after that, getting back to it moderately.

My wife is apparently addicted to her half pot (6 cup) a morning. Actually she seems to sip the same cup [HASH=53]#1,[/HASH] refilling when it cools off at the half cup mark. She leaves half of the pot to be poured out at night, just can't get going mornings without it. I won't be discussing her addiction with her.

Where are the Smilies? I needed the bug-eyed one. I see some being used by ya'll, so is there a code you use?

Brother @Bendito

You should cut back a bit too......admittedly a litre a day is marginal compared to Br.Bears consumption.......but I know the Lord wants His children to be well and not excessive,.
