How do we compare Grace (which is light) to Sin (which is darkness), and how do we understand their position in Christ?
Firstly, God created the world and said, “let there be light” (Genesis 1:1-4).
As scripture teaches, God divided the light from the darkness (Genesis 1:4). Darkness and light can never be united; the light always outshines the darkness and Grace always reigns over sin in God’s eyes. This is why He is not imputing sin unto believers. In God’s eyes a believer does not sin for this reason. Though they do unfruitful works they will give account of.
From the beginning we see that light and darkness cannot occupy the same space. This is true in the atmosphere as well as in men. The most important understanding is to believe what God’s word says (Romans 3:4).
Rom 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence (sin) might abound (be abundantly revealed). But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
Is there any possible way that sin can abound in the heart of man (in Christ) if grace occupies a man’s heart and abounds more (Romans 5:20)? Does God see His Grace, or does He see sin in a believer?
1Jo 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
Are believer in God?
Under the Old Covenant David told The Lord, he has hid His word in his heart; if God’s word was in David’s heart, how could David sin or be in darkness?
Psa 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Answer: Because the light (Grace) of the world had not come and abounded over sin (John 1:17).
Joh 8:12 Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Joh 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believes on me should not abide in darkness.
David understood, if God’s law is in a man’s heart, none of his steps would slide (Psalms 37:31). David also knew as long as Christ was not in a person’s heart, they were still in darkness; sinners. God through the law, told believers under the law they sinned, and accounted their sins against them (Deuteronomy 27:14-26).
Pro 20:9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
No one under the first covenant could; but David proposed this request to The Lord..
Psa 51:9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
Psa 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
This prayer of David was heard of The Lord, and fulfilled in all new covenant believers. Grace abounds in the hearts of all believers by giving man a clean heart and blotting out his iniquities (Acts 3:19; Revelations 1:5; 1Peter 2:24).
How is it that darkess can reign in the heart of a new covenant believer?
