I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul. You have not given me into the hands of the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place. Psalm 31:7-8
In scripture, “spacious” places symbolize the Lord’s deliverance, salvation, and blessing.
You certainly see this in the psalms of David. In 2 Samuel 22:20 (NIV), he thanks God: “He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.” In Psalm 18:19 (NIV) he thanks God again: “He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.” In Psalm 31:8 David says it yet again, as you saw above.
When the Lord first appears to Moses, God describes how He wants to bless His people, the ancient Israelites: “So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey” (Exodus 3:8 NIV).
Sadly, the Israelites squandered what God gave them. In Nehemiah 9:35 (NIV), eight Levites under Ezra’s direction confess: “Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying your great goodness to them in the spacious and fertile land you gave them, they did not serve you or turn from their evil ways.”
Prayer: Lord, the warning is clear. I never want to take You or Your blessings for granted.
