This is how the writer of Hebrews defines faith, in relation to the men and women of faith he was about to list in Hebrews 11. Though as is seen by the concordance definitions in relation to the rest of Scripture (above) this definition does not define all usage.

James 2:14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Twain wasn't that far off the mark seeing as how Heb 11:1 says, in so many words,
that faith is the evidence of things not seen.

Well that kind of evidence would never hold up in a court of law because it's
subjective rather than objective; i.e. that kind of faith is basically what people
feel in their gut rather than having reason to believe.

It is important to note that on the occasion that it was said of Abraham, 'And he believed in the Lord, and He counted it to him for righteousness' , there was no 'work' required other than to believe that God would do what He said He would do (see verses above).

* The same applies in John 6:28-29:-

"What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?"
Jesus answered and said unto them,
"This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him Whom He hath sent."

* Believing that God will do what He says He will do, is an act of faith in itself.

Mark Twain's words are not good as an illustration of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, for we are assured that what is said concerning Him, and what He Himself said was ' ... the Truth, and nothing but the Truth ... ', for He only spoke the words of God the Father, and God is not man that He should lie.

Faith is just believing that what God says He will assuredly do.

Yes, I just don’t get this notion that if I preach for one to have “faith” in Jesus Christ, it somehow means I am preaching “disobedience”.

I don’t see where the word “faith” in Jesus Christ suggests disobedience, but the opposite. Faith is also defined as being faithful, and having moral fidelity, like a bride being faithful to her husband.

So to me, one who has faith in Jesus Christ will also be “faithful” in keeping His words, or else it is not really faith. At least, that is the way I see it.

Yes, and in regard to this first one, it was the corporate faith of the sick man and his friends that resulted in the action of the Lord Jesus in healing the man, who was incapable of doing anything other than lie on his bed. They believed that the Lord Jesus Christ could heal. Yet the Lord said, 'Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee'. ('have been and are') - No doubt about it! He spoke and it was done!

Matthew 9:22

Again, we have such words of comfort, don't we? In the previous verse the Lord says, 'Be of good cheer', and here He says, 'Be of good comfort'. He cared for the state of mind of both of these people.

In the verse prior to this one, we have the words of our Lord to the blind men, ''Believe ye that I am able to do this?' and they said, 'Yes, Lord,' and then He said, 'according to your faith by it unto you.'

Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

This is the Canaanite woman, yes? The Lord was impressed by her faith, calling it 'great faith', His words, 'O woman, ' express a depth of feeling I feel, what a contrast with the Lord's words to His disciples in the next chapter, 16:8, ' O ye of little faith'.

Mark 2:5When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.

Look at the response of the Scribes sitting by and watching this in the next verse, they 'reasoned in their heart', but the Lord knew what was in their heart, didn't He? They thought, ' Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, He said unto them, "Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? And once You receive “The Parakletos” of GOD, you are Nothing but A new baby, with no Teeth, but gums, and can only “Suck Milk”, and “Cannot” do any thing but “Drink Milk”!

Statements alleged to have been spoken by Jesus are at best hearsay; thus they
cannot be used to prove themselves true. That would be like expecting a judge

I encounter Christians all the time on the internet who fail to realize that they are
believing in a lot of stuff that has never been reliably proven true beyond a hint of
sensible doubt. And not just them; every religious ideology whose belief system is

I don’t see where the word “faith” in Jesus Christ suggests disobedience, but the opposite. Faith is also defined as being faithful, and having moral fidelity, like a bride being faithful to her husband.

So to me, one who has faith in Jesus Christ will also be “faithful” in keeping His words, or else it is not really faith. At least, that is the way I see it.

It is important to note that on the occasion that it was said of Abraham, 'And he believed in the Lord, and He counted it to him for righteousness' , there was no 'work' required other than to believe that God would do what He said He would do (see verses above).

* The same applies in John 6:28-29:-

'Then said they unto Him,
"What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?"
Jesus answered and said unto them,
"This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him Whom He hath sent."

* Believing that God will do what He says He will do, is an act of faith in itself.
* Faith is just believing that what God says He will surely do.

Please consider that Paul was comparing Abraham's faith to that of his CIRCUMCISION in the flesh.

The Bible speaks of Abraham OBEYING God and going where God said to go and the scripture says this even before faith is mentioned.

Yes, I just don’t get this notion that if I preach for one to have “faith” in Jesus Christ, it somehow means I am preaching “disobedience”.

Because you preach faith and you know that there is false doctrine about faith alone saying people.

You know people teach faith alone saves, but you are acting like you never heard of that.

People teach that we are saved by faith alone and that if we do anything else like repent of our sins---they teach that we then fell from grace and now have a works salvation.

They don't understand that Paul is speaking of our not having to do the purification works anymore.

That is Jesus teaching people to believe in him.

Jesus is teaching people who know they have to repent of their sins! He is preaching to the Jews who know they have to obey God. He is preaching to people who have been water baptized.

And it is important to note that those people did not receive the Holy Spirit yet because Jesus didn't die and ascend yet.

They still had to obey before they could get the Holy Spirit.
