Christians Always Met on the Lord's Day not the Sabbath

If you want to obey God's commands from the Old Testament, God also commands to put to death anyone who does not obey the Sabbath:
Exo 31:15 For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death.

This command to put others to death for working on the Sabbath is just as much God's command as the one you quoted to keep the Sabbath.

We can't pick and choose which parts of God's law we want to follow. Which is precisely why we can either keep all of it, all 613 laws including the punishments for disobedience, or keep none of it. God prefers us to be either hot or cold not lukewarm, not some laws mixed with some grace.

Where in the New Testament does Jesus Christ tell us to change the seventh day Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday since only God can make something holy and sacred?
The Sabbath is not subject to evolution by man.

Where in the New Testament does Jesus change the command about putting to death those who work on the Sabbath? :)

The sabbath was the sabbath of God, He said that it was His holy day, how can anyone change that? I don't understand how anyone thinks they can. God made it in honour of Himself as the creator of the heavens and the earth. He sanctified it how can anyone change that? what God sanctifies it is sanctified forever. Where did sunday get such an honour? Where in scripture does it say that sunday was God's holy day? In fact it was called the first day of the week, no special attention was given to it. Where did God bless the first day of the week? God's day is the Lord's day, God was very specific on this, who has the right to change what God has blessed? God has sanctified you, can anyone take that away from you? Once you are sanctified by God it is forever the only thing keeping you from obtaining such a gift is unbelief. Once God blesses something, it is forever.
Why didn't the bible tell us in Mark 16:9 that the first day of the week was the Lord's day if in fact it was, no it just says "Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week," Here was a perfect opportunity to tell us the sabbath was no longer the sabbath, but the first day of the week was the Lord's day, but it simply calls it the first day of the week. Nothing special was added here, nowhere here, is it called the Lord's day.
Another thing, God's war was with the pagan nations in their worship of god's made of wood and stone which was based on sun worship. Every sunday they would bow down and worship the rising of the sun in the east, of all the days why would God change the sabbath day, to a day that represented sun worship, a thing in which He hated? The seventh day sabbath was a day that seperated Israel from the worship of false gods, it was a sign between God and Israel forever.

Ex.31:13 "Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you"
Can it be any more clear than this, to those who understand righteousness by faith, That it is a sign between God and Isreal, that He is the One that sanctifies us? How can that only apply to the Jewish nation if God is the one that sanctifies all?

If the sabbath was only for the Jews in the old testament then He only sanctified the Jews in the old testament.
The fourth commandment is as real as the seventh commandment, all of the commandments point out sin, and this cannot be changed, if it could be changed Jesus would not have had to die. By faith we except the sabbath and by faith we are made righteous, the sabbath was a sign that we are made righteous by God in Christ.

The commandment to observe the 7th day Sabbath was so special to God He did order the death penalty to those who disobeyed. And many did despite His warnings.
The only way to teach man the seriousness of God's law was by having severe consequences in place as a deterrence and to understand the absoluteness of God's commandments.
Today no one is executed for Sabbath breaking but the penalty is still death as is the penalty for all sin. " the soul that sinneth shall die" -Spiritual death, casting into the lake of fire will be the result of defiantly sinning without repenting.
Jesus kept the Sabbath, as did the apostles, and set the example of it's deep relevance and freed the people from the legalistic pharisee's categories of activities that comprised work. Jesus showed there was a balance and soundness. Sabbath laws had become more important than Sabbath rest. Jesus taught that the intent of God's Law is to promote love for God and others, making the Sabbath a blessing and a delight far from the burden many thought it was.
It is the day for our spiritual rejuvenation with God.
Why would anyone want to try to justify a different day?

I'm not sure but I believe the whole point from God was to take one day to worship and rest...be it a Saturday ,Sunday .i know ministers that take Monday or Friday due to ministry on Sunday...the point is find a day for The Lord ,set it aside ,worship with others of like precious faith .and Give God His credit He is due..IMHO..Rev

The lake of fire was the penalty for all sinners. But God gave specific instruction to His people to put to death those who work on the Sabbath. This was the punishment he gave His people to carry out, in addition to His punishment in the lake of fire. We cannot claim to keep the Sabbath or that the Sabbath still applies today, without also keeping the penalties for breaking it. The penalties are just as much God's command as the law itself. So it's either all Law or no law, we cannot pick and choose which laws we wish to follow. In this case it is clear that Sabbath-keepers believe in the Day but don't believe in the punishment for not keeping the Day.

A shadow is something that has an appearance of the thing but lacks the reality and substance. The Sabbath is only a shadow of the perpetual rest that Christ accomplished for us. If we wish to keep the Sabbath we are keeping only a shadow and not the reality who is Christ. Christians are to live in the reality and experience of this rest, which is every day and not a particular day of the week. If we have kept observances of shadows it indicates we have not fully placed our whole trust in Jesus Christ. If we are fearful that keeping the Sabbath will lead to us breaking the commandments and incur God's wrath, we have not fully entered into the reality of Christ as our Lord and Savior and our all in everything.

Hello all.

For those of you that hold to the idea that "the law" has relevance
in the New Covenant. I would appreciate your interpretation of the
following text;

Galatians 3
23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed.
24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.
25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.

Our works never justify us-rather it's God's grace in giving us His supreme sacrifice that justifies us. Still Paul speaks constantly of the need to obey.
He was not saying that obedience to the law was now meaningless because grace invalidated it. Paul wanted them to see obedience to the Law as a demonstration of " righteous living " and not rely on their own efforts to achieve salvation.
Paul said " follow me as I follow Christ "
The Law shows us what is sin and what is not sin-obeying the law does not justify us
We are now under the gift of grace from God. The word "under" simply shows what process justifies us. It does not invalidate the criteria upon which righteousness is defined.
The grace of God is all inclusive-it's intended for everyone who has lived. There is no longer a special people just because of heritage.

No longer under a tutor means we are no longer under Law. Christ fulfilled the Law so we don't have to.
JFB Commentary:
" Moses the lawgiver cannot bring us into the heavenly Canaan though he can bring us to the border of it. At that point he is superseded by Joshua, the type of Jesus, who leads the true Israel into their inheritance. The law leads us to Christ, and there its office ceases.

Yes Christ fulfilled the Law-He brought a deeper understanding of the spirit of the law rather than just the letter of the law.
e.g.-with adultery just looking at a woman with lust and intent was the same as committing the act. Jesus brought the law to a new level.
Do we keep the Ten commandments as our standard for righteousness since sin is the transgression of the law- of course.

Hello James,
You are refering to Col.2:14-20 and your right in the sense that there were other sabbaths in the law given to Israel, and if you notice in Col.2;20 "Wherfore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why as through living in the world are ye subject to ordinances." God's law was never an ordinance. The ordinances were written by the hand of Moses, the ten commandments were written by God, and the 7th day sabbath was in the law written by God. The 7th day sabbath was also under the mercy seat of the ark of the covenant with the other nine.

Who is it that represents God now James? the people that carry the message has changed, the truth has not changed. God did sanctify the Jews in the old testament who is it that is sanctified us now? Those that except the truth in Christ. We are now the light of the world.

"and if a Gentile wished to also participate, they had to become a Jew."

This is correct James, look at this on a grander scale. God spent 1500 years speaking the truth to Israel, after the 1500 years the truth came in the flesh and the truth was magnified and brought to life in Jesus. All those that believe in Jesus become a Jew, it is not the nation that is important to be a Jew, but the message, that is important to be a Jew. We are adopted into the truth as it is in Jesus
Gal. 3:29 "And if ye be Christ's then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." You and I are from the seed of Abraham, and the promise, becomes our birthright, through faith.

If we are fearful that keeping the Sabbath will lead to us breaking the commandments and incur God's wrath, we have not fully entered into the reality of Christ as our Lord and Savior and our all in everything.[/QUOTE]

Actually it works in the reverse. The sabbath was about relationship teaching us how the ten were to be kept. It is only through our love for God that we can be obedient to the law, not something we do on our own, but through the imparted love of God working in us. God wanted us to spend the sabbath with Him, to put all of our worldy cares aside and bring our families to Him in worship. He wanted us to spend the day together, that is what the sabbath was meant for. A day He chose not a day we choose. We except by the sabbath by faith even if it dosen't make sense to us for the simple reason that God commanded us to, in the law. "The sabbath was made for man" it was part of creation, created on the 7th day of the creation week. God said it was His holy day, how do you change that?

Who was kept under the custody of the law?

" Before faith came" because prior to Christ our trust in our own efforts to obey the law perfectly was pointless. What happened when He came? He paid the penalty for sin in our place. Prior to His coming grace was not available to us.So the faithfulness of Christ was completed in His successful living according to the law= doing what we could not do " under the custody of the law "-fulfilling what we could not fulfill. We were unable to live perfectly as Christ lived. We were "shut up " to that kind of faith.
It was revealed "later" as the completion of the faith of Christ was perfected when He finished His mission on earth and died and ascended to heaven and took His place as our Mediator and High Priest culminating with the giving of God's Holy spirit on Pentecost.
The law shows us as a tutor would what is right and what is wrong. Observing the law itself does not justify us but it does teach us what is needed to be justified. We learn we all fall short of perfection and knowing this we are under the law's penalties if left to our own devices and apart from Christ's work of living a perfect life and becoming the pure sacrifice for all mankind.

Jesus freed us from the penalty of our past sins. We do not have a licence to sin now. He will forgive our future sins after true repentance and continue to obey the ten commandments just as the apostles did and those in the early Christian Churches in the New Testament.

We Now give Every day as unto the LORD! That why we do not keep the sabvbath 1 He no longer settles for Just one day !

Heb_7:16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

Rom_12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Everything we do now is As unto the LORD ! Then we do our very best and do not mind doing whatever For HIM !

Hello judge not.

You did state that a person must obey the ten commandments.

Consider the following argument.

If a person obeys the ten commandments, the legal
code, the "law of righteousness" and believes in Jesus
Christ. Which appears to be the theology of some on TJ.

But this person is impure in thought, sensual, creates strife,
is constantly jealous of others and their success. Has an explosive
temperament, is drunk on occasion, plays up to pretty women, etc.

Is that person saved?

Hello Papajim.

I noticed your separation of "the law" into two types.

In the scripture the term "the law" is the principal term used.

Here are some examples;

Romans 5:13
for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

Romans 9:4
who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants
and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises,

Romans 7:2
For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies,
she is released from the law concerning the husband.

Romans 7:8
But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind;
for apart from the Law sin is dead.

Now we know that when the term "the law" is used it refers not only to
the ten commandments but also to the other commandments.

Human nature, the carnal mind is enmity against God. Remember that repentance and the forgiveness of sins is but the first step towards salvation. Overcoming the earthy pulls of this world is a lifelong process.
" For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law are justified....." Romans 2 covers a lot of God's principles on this issue.
Why would Jesus urge us to overcome if there is nothing further we must do once we have accepted Him as Savior?
The Bible says we must live a life of struggling against sin-being a Christian is not a free ride to salvation.
Didn't Jesus say that only a few will find the straight gate and narrow way that leads to eternal life.
It's a tough battle-our first major evil force is satan-who deceives the whole world.
Our second major force is our world-society and its bad influences and dangers.
Our third force we battle is our human nature as mentioned before.
You have to have true repentance-Paul said that the inner state of repentance, if nurtured, would inevitably express itself through outward works or repentance that bears fruit and a change in behavior.
Repentance is a life of obedience that involves continual changes-spiritual growth. But we all sin, willfully even, thankfully God will accept our repentance and forgive us as we turn back to Him and ask for His help to overcome our sinning ways.
God is always there for us, always.
If anyone reading this is a backsliding Christian that has drifted from the faith or returned to old habits and reading this in a forum like Talk Jesus trying to restore your beliefs remember the message God has for you:

" If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " 1John 1:9
