Greetings,

Interesting that a 'trump' has arrived on the scene of history.

Could you please explain your last paragraph @Beresheet

When you wrote:
They fought with God during that time and proved their loyalty to God at that time.

did you mean 'fought alongside with God'?

Bless you ....><>

~ "For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, ‘It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.’ In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring." ~ Romans 9:6b-8

~ “His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility... For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.” ~ Eph. 2:14-18

~ “For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law… The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say "and to seeds," meaning many people, but "and to your seed," MEANING ONE PERSON, who is Christ.” ~ Gal. 3:10, 16

~ “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” ~ Gal. 3:26-29

~ “For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman. His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise. These things are being taken figuratively: The women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother…

“Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise. At that time the son born according to the flesh persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. IT IS THE SAME NOW. But what does Scripture say? “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.” Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.” ~ Gal. 4:22-31

~ "Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” ~ Matt. 12:30

~ “Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.” ~ 1 Jn. 2:22

~ “As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.” ~ Ro. 11:28-32

~ “When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” ~ Matt. 8:10-12

Galatians 6:12-16: “Those who want to impress people by means of the flesh are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. Not even those who are circumcised keep the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh. May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—to the Israel of God.”

Romans 2:29: “No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.”

My Thoughts

We, the church, the Body of Christ, are the children of promise now (See Gal. 4).

The physical nation of Israel today is not to be confused with the nation of Israel of old. The nation of Israel of old was God’s holy people, set apart for God and for his service, although they certainly did not always live like holy people. Still, they belonged to God. He created them for his purposes. From them would come Jesus Christ, their Savior, into the world to save sinners, yet they, as a nation, rejected their promised Messiah, the seed of Abraham, and they had him crucified on a cross to die as though he was a common criminal, although he had done no wrong. So they, as a people, were cut off from the vine due to unbelief (See Romans 11). They can be grafted back in through belief, though. As well, many Jews have believed in Jesus Christ as their Messiah, Savior and Lord. Amen!

Jesus Christ, through his death and resurrection, made believing Jews and Gentiles one in Christ. He destroyed the barrier between the two groups.

So, you see, God only has one chosen people now, and they are the true church, the Body of Christ, whether Jew or Gentile by physical birth. Yet, we are no longer divided Jew and Gentile, but we are divided Christian and non-Christian; saved and unsaved (See Gal. 3:26-29).

It is critical that we get this in order for us to truly comprehend what is going on in the world and in the Middle East today! The physical nation of Israel today is not of God! They are not God’s chosen people, in other words. It is of Satan! Those who do not believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of their lives do not worship the God of Abraham. They are antichrist! They are not the children of promise. Only those who believe in Jesus Christ are the children of promise and heirs of God. The physical nation of Israel today is no different from any other nation created of men. They are of Hagar, so they are no different from the Arab nations. We need to get this. They are the “Gentiles” now! And, they are opposed to God and to his Son Jesus Christ, just like they were at the time they killed the Son of God, which means they are also opposed to the gospel of salvation and to those who hold to the testimony of Jesus Christ. So, why do so many Christians support them?

With regard to the prophecies in Ezekiel, if they are concerning these last days, then they have to be interpreted in light of the above mentioned concerning who Israel is today. In other words, in Ezekiel 36 it speaks of the people of Israel as having defiled their land by their conduct and their actions. So, God poured out his wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols. So, God scattered them among the nations. Wherever they went, they profaned God’s name. Yet, for the sake of His Name, God decided that he would gather Israel from all the countries where they were scattered and he would bring them back to their own land.

Then, he said that he would sprinkle clean water on them, and they would be clean. He will cleanse them from all their impurities and from all their idols. He will give them a new heart and he will put a new spirit within them. He will remove their heart of stone and will give them a heart of flesh (pliable hearts). And, he will put his Spirit in them and will move them to follow his decrees. He will save them from their uncleanness. On the day that he cleanses them from all their sins, he will resettle them in their towns and their ruins will be rebuilt.

Ok, the physical nation of Israel is described in the New Testament as being of Hagar, the slave woman. She, as a nation, has not turned to Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, so she has not been cleansed of her sins, she does not have a new heart, and the Spirit of the Lord is not in her as a physical nation. So, this passage in Ezekiel 36 cannot apply to the state of Israel as created by the UN/US/Rothschilds, et al. The cleansing is a prerequisite to the resettling and the rebuilding. As well, this is speaking of a spiritual renewal of God’s people, too, which the Jews who do not believe in Jesus are not today. Or, it is speaking of the Jews coming to faith in Jesus Christ. According to Wikipedia and a 2012 CBS report, the Christian population in the nation of Israel is somewhere between 2% to 3.5%. So, this cleansing of sin and the Spirit of God within her only represents a very small minority of the nation, so, again, this cannot be a reference to the present state of Israel as a nation.

My concern here, which I believe is also God’s concern, is that many Christians are giving their support to and are standing with an ungodly nation which does not worship the God of Abraham, and that, in doing so, they may, in fact, be supporting Satan and his work. Biblically speaking, I see no precedent for giving our support or standing with anyone other than Christ Jesus, his word, his gospel of salvation, and his followers who are holding strong to their testimonies, who are not denying their Lord, and who are suffering persecution for the sake of the cross. How do we know that the nation of Israel is not involved in the persecution of Christians, and even in their deaths, and that by supporting them we may be, in fact, supporting the persecution of our brothers and sisters in Christ worldwide. The passage in Galatians 4 says that the son of the slave woman, physical Israel, persecutes the Son of the free woman, which includes the persecution of the saints of God, true believers in Jesus Christ. So, please pray about this, because I believe this is HUGE!

Hello.

First, I want to say that there are christian Jews living in Isreal. And more Jews still do get saved over there. That must mean God working in Isreal.

Second, there are anointed prayer intercessor's that God lays on their heart to pray for physical Isreal. It gets prayer around the clock.

That''s it for now, Im on a phone and it is too hard to go back and relook at things written in here that I wanted to mention.

Oh, I did want to ask where did Jesus say there was 40 yr., 70 yr. and 120yr. generations? And where does it say that this generation, of the sons of Isreal that came back in 1948 that Isreal was established as a state that Christ would return? I've heard that before, but have no idea where that is. Maybe the poster didn't say Christ would return, I can't go back and look, but he did refer something concerning that generation . I did hear that from someone else tho, that Christ would return. Tho I am not a pretribber.

These 10 Bible prophecies were fulfilled in 1948 when Israel became an independent, united nation for the second time in history, and for the first time in 2,900 years.

1. Jacob's descendants would regain control of Israel
Bible passage: Amos 9:14-15
Written: about 750 BC
Fulfilled: Since 1948

In Amos 9:14-15, the prophet said that there would come a time when the exiles of Israel would again have Israel as their own land and that they would never be uprooted again. Amos lived about 2700 years ago, during a time when the people of Israel were being forced out of their homeland by a succession of foreign invasions. Despite many centuries of exile, many Jews returned to Israel and reclaimed sovereignty over a portion of their ancient homeland. This declaration of independence, in 1948, triggered a war with the surrounding countries, which objected to the presence of a Jewish state. On May 15, 1948, the day that armies from the surrounding countries invaded, Azzam Pasha, the Secretary General of the Arab League, said "This will be a war of extermination and a momentous massacre which will be spoken of like the Mongolian massacres and the Crusades." Similar quotes were uttered by others during the war of 1948-49 and during the two major wars that followed. Despite its tiny size, Israel prevailed in these wars, preventing its people from being uprooted again, as they had been in ancient times.

Amos 9:14-15
I will bring back my exiled people Israel; they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them," says the Lord your God.

Hello @Chad,

If the unconditional promises of God to Israel are to be fulfilled, which were made to the patriarchs concerning an everlasting seed and an everlasting land, then it is obvious that the present condition of Israel, scattered as they are throughout the nations of the world, must be altered: and that they must be gathered from out of the nations and brought back to the land of promise. This is promised in Jer. 31:10. 'He that scattered Israel will gather him'. Isaiah Israel does not yet possess all of the land promised to them in Genesis 15, either.

'In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying,
Unto thy seed have I given this land,
from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:'

(Gen 15:18)
2. Israel would be brought back to life
Bible passage: Ezekiel 37:10-14
Written: between 593-571 BC
Fulfilled: 1948

In Ezekiel 37:10-14, the prophet receives a vision in which Israel was seen as a scattering of dried-up bones. In this vision, God tells Ezekiel that the bones (Israel) would be brought back to life. Just as Ezekiel had prophesied about 2600 years ago, the Jews were brought back to the land, and the country of Israel was brought back to life. Israel re-established sovereignty in 1948, a mere three years after the end of the Holocaust, during which the Nazis killed about one-third of the world's Jewish population.

Ezekiel 37:10-14
So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet--a vast army. Then he said to me: "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, `Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.' Therefore prophesy and say to them: `This is what the Sovereign Lord says: O my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.'"

* This has not happened yet, this is a resurrection of the children of Israel.

This is as far as I can go at the moment.

God's spiritual promises never contradict his "natural"promises. Is there any reason why it can't pertain to both? The Jews that come to Christ won't be those adhering to Judaism.

Rom 11:25; For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery--so that you will not be wise in your own estimation--that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in;
Deut 7:6; "For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

No prophecy has been fulfilled for the last 1948 years. That the nation of Israel, formed in 1948, was a fulfillment of prophecy, is the BIG LIE, the GRAND HOAX, of the last century.

From The Grand Hoax.
"The Israeli government, today, is made up of unbelieving Jews administering a socialistic government which depends mostly upon the U.S.A. for its sustenance. When the true descendants of the three Patriarchs occupy the Land, they will depend on the LORD their God, and in no-one else will they trust. They will be totally dependent upon the Lord Jesus Christ. And, He will meet every need of His re-gathered people"

Eze 11:17-20
17 Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord God; I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.
18 And they shall come thither, and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence.
19 And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:
20 That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them:
and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

Eze 36:24-28
24 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.
25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.

These verses show what will happen when God actually does collect Israel and return her to the land. Israel is still as filthy as ever. They certainly haven't had a new spirit put into them. It's impossible that they are walking in God's statutes, keeping His ordinances. Without a temple, they CAN"T keep the law. If they can't keep the law, they are not God's chosen people, although they will be again in about 45 years. When's the last time they offered an animal sacrifice, which they must do under the law? There will even be animal sacrifices by Israel during the millennium - Eze 43:19,21,22,23,25, 45:18,22,23,24, 46:7,11. Of course, they'll have a temple then.Israel will always have to keep the law. After God gathers them, they will have their (Jer 31:31) New Covenant, whose only purpose is to indwell Israel with the Spirit (see verses above) and put the law in their inward parts, so they will be able to keep the law and love doing it.

There has been no nation of Israel since they were set aside in Ac 28:25-27, when Paul pronounced total spiritual blindness on them, through the curse of Isa 6:9-10, for the 7th (the number of completion) and last time in the Bible. All OT prophecy involves Israel. Since Israel doesn't exist, in God's eyes, no prophecy can be fulfilled.

Here's a map of modern Israel (red) vs the true promised land
The Geographic Center of The Earth And The Bible

Just because 2 things are similar, that doesn't mean they're the same!

This is the best you can do? I hope you’re not a teacher or professor.

Lol, I'm not a professor or paid teacher. I read the Bible and study and do research in scriptures because that's the only place where the answers are found.
I know that 1948 is not in there!

I know that 1948 is not in there!

Neither is the date Jesus was born, the date he'll return. Neither are a lot of things not directly mentioned in the Bible, outright. However, in close studies you'll see there are lots of prophecies fulfilled even hundreds of years later after their prophecies were first made.

Since you haven't taught us anything nor given a proper "study", why reply? You added nothing.

Sorry, I forgot to post a reply.
Still New at this!

1948 is a BIG LIE! Why?
Because scriptures tells us that the LORD spoke to Abram the Hebrew and gave him this prophecy abut his seed! Let's read:
Acts 7:6
[6]And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and Entreat Them Evil four hundred years!

Genesis 15:13
[13]And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

Remember they were in Egypt 430yrs not 400!
Exodus 12:40
[40]Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years.

Aftwards shall they return home:
Israel is still in CAPTIVITY today!
So that prophecy givendors to Abram has not been fulfilled yet!
Once it is then:

Then the journey home begins!

Jeremiah 3:18
[18]In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.
Jeremiah 33:7
[7]And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.
Jeremiah 30:3
[3]For, lo, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, saith the LORD: and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.

Isaiah 14:1-3
[1]For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.
[2]And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them captives, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.
[3]And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve

2 Samuel 7:10
[10]Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime,

@Chad is right, there are a few holes in your logic. First of all the verses you listed were for different events with different timeframes.
Also none of them have a specific "this will happen this year" attached to them.

Finally, keep in mind the Palestinians (Arabs) are also the descendants of Abraham through Ishmael.

They are in bondage in the sense that they aren't "saved" (Christians) but you are confusing being in bondage with possessing the land.
Many times in the Bible Israel was "in Israel" but occupied and ruled by other people, the Philistines in the story of Samson, the Romans in the time of Jesus.

Rom 11: talks about Israel being blinded... they are under a partial hardening. Especially verses 25-28. But that doesn't mean that aren't possessing the land.

Ishmeal's seed, Arabs are NOT the Children of Israel!

Genesis 21:1-12
[1]And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.
[2]For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.
[3]And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.
[4]And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him.
[5]And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.
[6]And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me.
[7]And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age.
[8]And the child grew, and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned.
[9]And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.
[10]Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.
[11]And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son.
[12]And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

Ishmael is not even recognized as his son in this scripture:

Genesis 22:2
[2]And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

As for Bondage: bondage means slavery servitude!
In captivity they served physical slavery because that's what the LORD told Abram his seed would do! Let's look at those 2 scriptures again:
Acts 7:6
[6]And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and Entreat Them Evil four hundred years!

Genesis 15:13
[13]And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

The people who are oppressing the Children of Israel don't know that they are fulfilling those scriptures also, because they're doing the oppression, they're doing their part of those scriptures by speaking against them and denying who they are!
Romans 9:26
[26]And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.

Gentiles are in the Land, not The Children of Israel!
Luke 21:24
[24]And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

Please understand the name African American was given to the Children of Israel in the 1970's. So the correction should've been noted Hebrew Israelites. Because the prophecy was only for Abraham the Hebrew's seed who are obviously Hebrew Israelites, not Africans!

Creation of Israel, 1948

On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion, the head of the Jewish Agency, proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel. U.S. President Harry S. Truman recognized the new nation on the same day.

truman-israel.jpg

Eliahu Elath presenting ark to President Truman

Although the United States supported the Balfour Declaration of 1917, which favored the establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had assured the Arabs in 1945 that the United States would not intervene without consulting both the Jews and the Arabs in that region. The British, who held a colonial mandate for Palestine until May 1948, opposed both the creation of a Jewish state and an Arab state in Palestine as well as unlimited immigration of Jewish refugees to the region. Great Britain wanted to preserve good relations with the Arabs to protect its vital political and economic interests in Palestine.

Soon after President Truman took office, he appointed several experts to study the Palestinian issue. In the summer of 1946, Truman established a special cabinet committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Henry F. Grady, an Assistant Secretary of State, who entered into negotiations with a parallel British committee to discuss the future of Palestine. In May 1946, Truman announced his approval of a recommendation to admit 100,000 displaced persons into Palestine and in October publicly declared his support for the creation of a Jewish state. Throughout 1947, the United Nations Special Commission on Palestine examined the Palestinian question and recommended the partition of Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab state. On November 29, 1947 the United Nations adopted Resolution 181 (also known as the Partition Resolution) that would divide Great Britain’s former Palestinian mandate into Jewish and Arab states in May 1948 when the British mandate was scheduled to end. Under the resolution, the area of religious significance surrounding Jerusalem would remain a corpus separatum under international control administered by the United Nations.

Although the United States backed Resolution 181, the U.S. Department of State recommended the creation of a United Nations trusteeship with limits on Jewish immigration and a division of Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab provinces but not states. The State Department, concerned about the possibility of an increasing Soviet role in the Arab world and the potential for restriction by Arab oil producing nations of oil supplies to the United States, advised against U.S. intervention on behalf of the Jews. Later, as the date for British departure from Palestine drew near, the Department of State grew concerned about the possibility of an all-out war in Palestine as Arab states threatened to attack almost as soon as the UN passed the partition resolution.

Despite growing conflict between Palestinian Arabs and Palestinian Jews and despite the Department of State’s endorsement of a trusteeship, Truman ultimately decided to recognize the state Israel.

State of Israel proclaimed

On May 14, 1948, in Tel Aviv, Jewish Agency Chairman David Ben-Gurion proclaims the State of Israel, establishing the first Jewish state in 2,000 years. In an afternoon ceremony at the Tel Aviv Art Museum, Ben-Gurion pronounced the words “We hereby proclaim the establishment of the Jewish state in Palestine, to be called Israel,” prompting applause and tears from the crowd gathered at the museum. Ben-Gurion became Israel’s first premier.

In the distance, the rumble of guns could be heard from fighting that broke out between Jews and Arabs immediately following the British army withdrawal earlier that day. Egypt launched an air assault against Israel that evening. Despite a blackout in Tel Aviv–and the expected Arab invasion–Jews joyously celebrated the birth of their new nation, especially after word was received that the United States had recognized the Jewish state. At midnight, the State of Israel officially came into being upon termination of the British mandate in Palestine.

Modern Israel has its origins in the Zionism movement, established in the late 19th century by Jews in the Russian Empire who called for the establishment of a territorial Jewish state after enduring persecution. In 1896, Jewish-Austrian journalist Theodor Herzl published an influential political pamphlet called The Jewish State, which argued that the establishment of a Jewish state was the only way of protecting Jews from anti-Semitism. Herzl became the leader of Zionism, convening the first Zionist Congress in Switzerland in 1897. Ottoman-controlled Palestine, the original home of the Jews, was chosen as the most desirable location for a Jewish state, and Herzl unsuccessfully petitioned the Ottoman government for a charter.

After the failed Russian Revolution of 1905, growing numbers of Eastern European and Russian Jews began to immigrate to Palestine, joining the few thousand Jews who had arrived earlier. The Jewish settlers insisted on the use of Hebrew as their spoken language. With the collapse of the Ottoman Empire during World War I, Britain took over Palestine. In 1917, Britain issued the “Balfour Declaration,” which declared its intent to establish a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Although protested by the Arab states, the Balfour Declaration was included in the British mandate over Palestine, which was authorized by the League of Nations in 1922. Because of Arab opposition to the establishment of any Jewish state in Palestine, British rule continued throughout the 1920s and ’30s.

Beginning in 1929, Arabs and Jews openly fought in Palestine, and Britain attempted to limit Jewish immigration as a means of appeasing the Arabs. As a result of the Holocaust in Europe, many Jews illegally entered Palestine during World War II. Radical Jewish groups employed terrorism against British forces in Palestine, which they thought had betrayed the Zionist cause. At the end of World War II, in 1945, the United States took up the Zionist cause. Britain, unable to find a practical solution, referred the problem to the United Nations, which in November 1947 voted to partition Palestine.

The Jews were to possess more than half of Palestine, although they made up less than half of Palestine’s population. The Palestinian Arabs, aided by volunteers from other countries, fought the Zionist forces, but by May 14, 1948, the Jews had secured full control of their U.N.-allocated share of Palestine and also some Arab territory. On May 14, Britain withdrew with the expiration of its mandate, and the State of Israel was proclaimed. The next day, forces from Egypt, Transjordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq invaded.

The Israelis, though less well equipped, managed to fight off the Arabs and then seize key territory, such as Galilee, the Palestinian coast, and a strip of territory connecting the coastal region to the western section of Jerusalem. In 1949, U.N.-brokered cease-fires left the State of Israel in permanent control of this conquered territory. The departure of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Arabs from Israel during the war left the country with a substantial Jewish majority.

During the third Arab-Israeli conflict–the Six-Day War of 1967–Israel again greatly increased its borders, capturing from Jordan, Egypt, and Syria the Old City of Jerusalem, the Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights. In 1979, Israel and Egypt signed an historic peace agreement in which Israel returned the Sinai in exchange for Egyptian recognition and peace. Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) signed a major peace accord in 1993, which envisioned the gradual implementation of Palestinian self-government in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The Israeli-Palestinian peace process moved slowly, however, and in 2000 major fighting between Israelis and Palestinians resumed in Israel and the occupied territories.
