Horror Movies & Christians? Don't sound right

Sometimes I think is ok watching these sort of things even that are rated R sometimes they show sexaull thing i would had to shut off the TV because I knew something would come and keep it off and wait for a few sec because I don't want that movie to put bad stuff in my mind but man the devil is a liar but then I would turn back on and all that junk would be over because that something I would not like to watch and the part I really hate is that kind because can take the shooting stuff but don't i watch this sort of stuff all the time:embarasse
Something to think about. I don't know if this has been quoted yet. Psalm 101:3: will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.
We should NEVER EVER deliberately put something wicked before our eyes. Horror movies are wicked, there is no way around it. You can't justify it, the Bible is against it. As Christians we can't do it.
I am not going to say I haven't been there because I have, but I can't convince myself anymore that horror movies, or sexually explicit movies are justifiable. Look into your conscience, you'll see

I can honestly say that When I came to Jesus and He delivered me and saved me and I became His child I have tried very hard not to watch any movie that is above a pg-13 rating. I won't watch rated R movies at all as I can't stand all the foul langauge and explicit scenes they show....to me that doesnt make a movie....it only ruins it for me......thats not entertainment at all.
I havent watched a horror movie in a long while but I can't say I never did cause I have in the past. I don't think people realize how much what they watch and listen to does effect them. If you ask me it effects a person mentally,spiritually, and emotionally if they watch or listen to alot of junk they shouldnt be taking in.
At any rate......Im tryin my best to keep what I see and listen to pure and clean because as it tells us in the bible " Think on those things that are pure and good"

I believe that horror movies and porn are an incidious ways evil is introduced into society in the name of entertainment. Don't forget, God can see into your heart (incidentally satan cannot) and watching such filth hardens and numbs you to it. Eventually you no longer find it evil, just everyday.

I love old horror movies.
I have such a huge collection of films from the silent era through the early 1950s. I detest "modern" horror.
There was just something about Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. They were such great actors that by simply changing expression, or subtly altering the tones of their voices you could read so much into the story on screen without ever witnessing anything gruesome. And the storylines were so much more suspenseful. That was when they relied on great tales rather than sex, violence, or multi-million dollar special effects.
I don't mind the older horror films at all. In fact, I watch them with my younger nephews and nieces. It's sharing something I love that I feel is a wholesome alternative to the utter filth at the theater nowadays.
These classics often had a moral as well. usually, that evil no matter how powerful would always be overcome by good. And that love was infinitely more potent than baser emotions.
Oh, I'm also a fan of Godzilla and other giant atomic monsters.

It's my opinion that if you are a child of God you will only want to view those things that God would view and I can't see my Lord watching such things. I used to watch all kinds of movies and listen to all sorts of music but once I became a Born Again Child of God I can no longer induldge in these things any more. I find it helpful if you ask yourself, would God watch this or would God listen to this? I hope this helps.

Question: "Should a Christian go to movies? Is watching a movie a sin?"
Answer: For a Christian, the question is not so much "is watching this movie a sin?" but "is this something that Jesus would want me to do?" The Bible tells us that many things are permitted, but not all things are beneficial or constructive (1 Corinthians 10:23). It also says that whatever we say or do (or watch) should be done to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). We are to put our mind on things that are noble and pure (Philippians4:8). If - and this is a big if - we can watch a movie or TV program that contains questionable content AND still be in agreement with these commands from the Bible, I do not see a wrong in this.
The danger lies in (1) how what we are watching affects our heart and (2) how it affects others. For ourselves, if the scene we see brings a feeling of lust, anger, or hatred, then we have sinned (Matthew 5:22,28). For others, it can be a stumbling block to someone that is struggling with a habit or behavior that is coming between them and God (1 Corinthians 10:25-33, Romans 14:13). As members of the body of Christ we are to be a light to the world (Matthew 5:14) and an holy example of what God has done in our life (1 Peter 2:11,12).
So how do we know for sure what is beneficial? When we become a follower of Christ we are given His Holy Spirit to live in us (Acts 2:38, 2 Timothy 1:14). Jesus tells us that this Spirit will guide us in the truth (John 16:13). One way God's Spirit guides us is by our conscience (Romans 1:12, 9:1). If your conscience is telling you that what you are watching is wrong, it probably is.

I agree, there are no more true horror films, now the are slasher/gore movies. in the old films you very rarely saw any one killed and if you did it was over very quick with no blood or gore.
There are very few movies/TV worth watching today.
As said " would Jesus want you to be viewing this" be your guide.
Remember tho' the world has to be in a specific frame of mind for GOD's plan to reach fulfilment. It is going to get a whole lot sicker before it get better...
Have you thought of the Harry Potter movies as being wrong ?

Some of the Disney movies produced after the 70s have disturbed me a bit.
There's a lot of subtle sexuality and adult "humor" peppered throughout some of the films. I'm not sure how many youngsters catch on, but it's apparent to me.
Harry Potter I grappled with for a while. Ultimately, being a fan of fantasy - thanks largely to my love of the Narnia and Oz books as a kid, I've given Potter a pass. It has witchcraft, wizards and such, but so did Narnia, and Baum's charming Oz adventures, many Christian fantasy tales also have these.
And I've never felt a desire to become a wizard, nor have my littlest relatives, being my nephews and nieces.
Ultimately I feel you must do what the Holy Spirit places upon your heart.
I once enjoyed Heavy Metal music, but the Lord led me to abandon it, as it was not something I feel I should be listening to. But so far I've not felt the least bit burdened to rid myself of the classic horror films I enjoy, the science fiction (I love Ray Bradbury) and scary books I occasionally read, or Harry Potter (whose books I have also read).
I have Christian friends who tell me to throw all of that away. And it's fine if that's the way they feel about it, since obviously the Lord doesn't want them reading it, or watching it. But He hasn't told me to step away. Until he does, I'm going to continue enjoying it as entertainment. And since I almost never watch television (except for the local news, and the occasional DVD or major sporting event) it's about the only entertainment I indulge in.

Before I asked Jesus to be my Lord and Savior, television was a huge part of my life; I watched stuff that was rated G, PG, R, or X. But, when Jesus came into my life, I began to hear a different message; slowly but surely my menu of preferred after work activities began to change. Learning about the Lord and growing in him became progressively more important and more rewarding. I found out that I had a higher purpose; that I had not been put on earth to spend hours every night drinking beer in front of a television set.
As I sit in my bedrom typing this post, I can hear the sound of our TV in the other room. A "CSI Miami" re-run is on and I'm tempted to go in and watch it. But I've decided against it.
Two years ago, God provided me with my first computer. I knew then that he wanted me to use it for his glory on this site and a couple other sites. What I didn't know was how awesome it would be for me to see people blessed by the words he would give me to post.
I don't get that reward when I watch "CSI Miami".

Something on the order of 50-plus hours a week. I had a television in my bedroom, my living room, and a little black & white 5-inch in my bathroom.
All wired for cable.
But after finding the Lord, I too have dramatically cut back on the amount of television I watch. My weekly viewing is maybe all told, 3-5 hours total now (not including the occasional DVD watched). I'm not sure if those two things are connected. But it does seem interesting that as my faith grew and I became more mature as a Christian, my appetite for t.v. has steadily wained.
The shows just don't really appeal to me anymore. Especially all of that so-called "reality tv". I will catch Roy Rogers and Hopalong Cassidy when I can. A local western channel runs those old serials, and I just love them.
But that's about it. I didn't even watch local news tonight (I read it instead online).

Hmm, I actaully like horror. But I hate violence and I'm one of those people who cover my eyes when a violent scene appears. (I'm actually anti-violent and am offended by real violence on the streets). However I like to be a little scared every now and then. I don't base any of my values or morals on it. I don't feel that it is going against God to be lightly entertained in this nature but maybe I'm wrong? I never feel like I'm sinning when I watch them.
Hey, there is one thing I definatly draw limits on. Any sacreligious or blasphemy genre. For instance, I cannot and will not watch any sort of exorcism movies.
p.s. I like the Dean Koontz books
Looks like we are the only two who like horror films,here! There are lines that I will not cross,and I am careful to check the rating and find out "why" it's rated PG-13 or in extremely rare cases will I watch an "R". I do not watch slasher or zombie films,I think they are just sick, glorified serial killing,but I do enjoy just creepy/spooky type films,it's fun getting a mild jolt when you know you are safe,LOL! The don't go in the basement/garage/barn- type scares.
I'm talking like the old haunted house or unknown threat like the original "The Fog", or "Darkness Falls"(about a mean tooth fairy,but had some really good jumps in it),no cursing,nudity or sex.I do not believe in ghosts, so those films don't bother me in the least,and I think they are fun,as was the old Gargoyles. I have my collection of oldies,and watch very few newer ones,but do enjoy a few of the newer PG-13 ones,like Skelton Key,was a really neat story,I thought. I do not feel convicted either,but I have been led to turn several films off,because they turned out to hadve elements that I will not accept,such as offensive language, or were too violent. If someone has a belief/fear of ghosts or whatever, or they do feel convicted,they they most certainly should not watch these types.
I do not watch network TV.,except local news. I only watch certain cable channels National Geographic,Dicovery Times,Discovery,History,Hallmark,Travel ,Food Network,and Animal Planet and my favorite,Turner Classic Movies.

Television shows and movies are great topics of conversations, especially when talking to non-christians. There have been several conversations with a non -christian that have began with e.g. "Do you watch C.S.I" and I'd say "Yeah I love that show." or "Do you watch Little Britian?", "Yeah that show is so funny." ...and there begins a new friendship. I think it's important not to shun ourselves completely from worldly things, because otherwise we would not know how to relate to non-believers. These common grounds with non-believers give us a bridge and a way to reach out to them - as long as we don't become of the world.

I heard a sermon once about Harry Potter Movies and I am just thankfull I never watched any of them, because they aren't good.
There is much on that Television as Christians we shouldn't be watching and I must admit I find myself walking away from it time out of number my husband never has it off as he's unsaved, he even got himself headphones so he could indulge and I wouldn't have to hear, I usually plug myself into my radio and try to find something decent on the airwaves which is becoming as hard as it is on TV
What about the soaps do you think they're not right to watch either, I did stop watching these for months but admit am watching them again, but really don't think the material in them is good, they are always swilling down alcohol, committing adultery, lying, stealing on and on.....what you think?
About Narnia, C S Lewis didnt stay strong in his commitment to his faith in his latter years, which makes his material a bit dubious. I wouldn't read it just to be safe anyway.
We have to be so careful who we listen to , wolves in sheeps clothing, there are out there, but we will know them by their fruit and by the leading of the Holy Spirit, I used to always say....WWJD what would Jesus do, that helped me greatly and still does.
Brothers and Sisters just be careful let our Lord Jesus Christ lead and by prayer and supplication make our petition be made known to Him.
He is faithfull and just and will keep us on the narrow way.

I have never wanted to read or watch anything to do with Harry Potter. I heard enough about it on the radio to put me off going anywhere near them

Answer: Television, like many other diversions we have in today's society, has the ability to do both great good and great harm. On the plus side it can be a wonderful educational tool. News and weather reports have saved countless lives, and we have access to entertainment, sports and information that can be helpful and uplifting. From a Christian standpoint it has been used to share the Gospel to virtually every nation on earth (Matthew 28:19) and countless lives have been changed through this. On the negative side, however, many people have become mindlessly addicted to whatever show may be on, taking them away from family, friends and time with God. Many of the most popular shows today focus on the worst that mankind has to offer, and evil is glorified as good (see 2 Timothy 3:1-5, Isaiah 5:20). We see some men and women claiming to be ministers of God that are more concerned about money and prestige than about saving souls (2 Timothy 4:3-4).
The impact of television in our lives comes in what we do with it. We can let it control us, or we can use it as the tool it was meant to be. Here are some verses that may help you in discerning what is appropriate in your TV viewing:
Matthew 5:28: "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
Matthew 6:22-23: "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!"
Romans 12:2: "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will."
Romans 13:13-14: "Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature."
Philippians 4:8: "Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things."
1 Thessalonians 5:21-22: "Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil."
