Exod 20:2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
Exod 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before Me.
Exod 20:4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
Exod 20:5 "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
God says there is only one God. You can only worship that God. There is no other.
.. but in the Bible, it also says...
1. Did Anyone Worship Jesus in the Bible?
Yes. Multiple times. The Greek word often translated as "worship" is
προσκυνέω (proskyneō), which means to bow down, pay homage, or worship. Here are some examples:
Before the Resurrection:
- Matthew 2:11 – The Magi "fell down and worshiped Him" (Jesus as a child).
- Matthew 14:33 – After Jesus walked on water, "those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, 'You are certainly God’s Son!'"
- John 9:38 – The man healed of blindness said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped Him.
After the Resurrection:
- Matthew 28:9 – The women "took hold of His feet and worshiped Him."
- Matthew 28:17 – The disciples "worshiped Him; but some were doubtful."
2. Did Angels Worship Jesus?
Yes. Hebrews 1:6 is crystal clear:
This is a direct command from the Father regarding the Son. Angels, who are holy and do not worship anyone but God, are told to worship Jesus—this is a powerful affirmation of His divinity.
3. Are Believers Told to Worship Jesus?
While there’s no single verse that says “you must worship Jesus,” the
pattern of worship directed toward Him is consistent and accepted in the New Testament:
- Philippians 2:10–11 – “At the name of Jesus every knee will bow... and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
- Revelation 5:12–14 – Jesus (the Lamb) receives worship alongside the Father. All creation shared between the Father and the Son.
4. Would Angels Worship a False God?
Absolutely not. Revelation 22:8–9 shows that even when John tries to worship an angel, the angel rebukes him:
So if angels worship Jesus, it must be because
He is God.
Conclusion
Exodus 20 commands worship of
one God, and the New Testament shows that Jesus is worshiped—by angels, by humans, and in heaven—without rebuke. This only makes sense if Jesus is
fully divine, part of the
one God revealed in three Persons.
