(Hebrews 11:1-3)

Hello @StewardoftheMystery,

This is how the writer of Hebrews defines faith, in relation to the men and women of faith he was about to list in Hebrews 11. Though as is seen by the concordance definitions in relation to the rest of Scripture (above) this definition does not define all usage.

This could be the basis of a good study, I look forward to seeing how it progresses. :)

Thank you

James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

James 2:20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

James 2:22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.

James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

G3640:- oligopistos (ol-ig-op'-is-tos)
Definition:- From G3641 and G4102; incredulous, that is, lacking confidence (in Christ)
Translated: - of little faith.
Occurrences:- 5 - ( Matthew 6:30, 8:26, 14:31, 16:8 Luke 12:28 )

'Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field,
which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven,
shall He not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?'
(Mat 6:30/Luke 12:28)

'And He saith unto them,
Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?
Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea;
and there was a great calm.'
(Mat 8:26)

'And He said, Come.
And when Peter was come down out of the ship,
he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid;
and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, "Lord, save me."
And immediately Jesus stretched forth His hand, and caught him,
and said unto him, "O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?"
And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.'
(Mat 14:29-32)

'And they reasoned among themselves, saying,
It is because we have taken no bread.
Which when Jesus perceived, He said unto them,
"O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves,
because ye have brought no bread?"'
(Mat 16:7-8)

* I love the way the Hebrew language distinguishes, by the use of another word, words for faith, and the lack of it, don't you? It is so precise.

Faith is believing somethin' you know ain’t true.
- Mark Twain -

Twain wasn't that far off the mark seeing as how Heb 11:1 says, in so many words,
that faith is the evidence of things not seen.

Well that kind of evidence would never hold up in a court of law because it's
subjective rather than objective; i.e. that kind of faith is basically what people

feel in their gut rather than having reason to believe.

'And Abram said, "Behold, to me Thou hast given no seed:
and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir."
And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
This shall not be thine heir;
but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.
And he brought him forth abroad, and said,
"Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them:"
and He said unto him," So shall thy seed be."
And he believed in the LORD; and He
counted it to him for righteousness.'

(Gen 15:3-6)

Hello @StewardoftheMystery,

It is important to note that on the occasion that it was said of Abraham, 'And he believed in the Lord, and He counted it to him for righteousness' , there was no 'work' required other than to believe that God would do what He said He would do (see verses above).

* The same applies in John 6:28-29:-

'Then said they unto Him,
"What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?"
Jesus answered and said unto them,
"This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him Whom He hath sent."

* Believing that God will do what He says He will do, is an act of faith in itself.
* Faith is just believing that what God says He will surely do.

Praise God!

Thank you

'For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ:
for it is the power of God unto salvation
to every one that believeth
;
to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed
from faith to faith:
as it is written,
"The just shall live by faith".'

Hello @Beetow

Mark Twain's words are not good as an illustration of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, for we are assured that what is said concerning Him, and what He Himself said was ' ... the Truth, and nothing but the Truth ... ', for He only spoke the words of God the Father, and God is not man that He should lie.

Faith is just believing that what God says He will assuredly do.

Yes, I just don’t get this notion that if I preach for one to have “faith” in Jesus Christ, it somehow means I am preaching “disobedience”.

I don’t see where the word “faith” in Jesus Christ suggests disobedience, but the opposite. Faith is also defined as being faithful, and having moral fidelity, like a bride being faithful to her husband.

So to me, one who has faith in Jesus Christ will also be “faithful” in keeping His words, or else it is not really faith. At least, that is the way I see it.

Here are some good examples of this…
Matthew 9:2
And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.

Matthew 9:22
But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

Matthew 9:29
Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

Matthew 15:28
Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

Mark 2:5
When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.

Mark 5:34
And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

Mark 10:52
And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

Luke 5:20
And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

Luke 7:50
And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.

Luke 8:48
And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.

Luke 17:19
And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

Luke 18:42
And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee.

Here are some good examples of this…
Matthew 9:2
And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.
Hello @StewardoftheMystery,

Yes, and in regard to this first one, it was the corporate faith of the sick man and his friends that resulted in the action of the Lord Jesus in healing the man, who was incapable of doing anything other than lie on his bed. They believed that the Lord Jesus Christ could heal. Yet the Lord said, 'Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee'. ('have been and are') - No doubt about it! He spoke and it was done!
Matthew 9:22
But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
Again, we have such words of comfort, don't we? In the previous verse the Lord says, 'Be of good cheer', and here He says, 'Be of good comfort'. He cared for the state of mind of both of these people.
Matthew 9:29
Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
In the verse prior to this one, we have the words of our Lord to the blind men, ''Believe ye that I am able to do this?' and they said, 'Yes, Lord,' and then He said, 'according to your faith by it unto you.'
Matthew 15:28
Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
This is the Canaanite woman, yes? The Lord was impressed by her faith, calling it 'great faith', His words, 'O woman, ' express a depth of feeling I feel, what a contrast with the Lord's words to His disciples in the next chapter, 16:8, ' O ye of little faith'.
Mark 2:5When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
Look at the response of the Scribes sitting by and watching this in the next verse, they 'reasoned in their heart', but the Lord knew what was in their heart, didn't He? They thought, ' Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, He said unto them, "Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house. "(vv5-12) And immediately He arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, "We never saw it on this fashion."
Mark 5:34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
Mark 10:52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole.

Praise God! What lovely examples, thank you so much for listing them like this, it has been a joy to go through them. I shall have to look at the remaining six later.

Within the love of Christ our Saviour,
our Lord and Head.
Risen and glorified and sat at God's right hand.

Statements alleged to have been spoken by Jesus are at best hearsay; thus they
cannot be used to prove themselves true. That would be like expecting a judge
to acquit an accused man on the credibility of him saying he didn't do it.

I encounter Christians all the time on the internet who fail to realize that they are
believing in a lot of stuff that has never been reliably proven true beyond a hint of
sensible doubt. And not just them; every religious ideology whose belief system is
based upon proprietary holy books is in the same boat, e.g. Judaism, Islam, LDS,
Buddhism, and Hinduism, etc.

“Trust Not unto thy own Understanding”

Child of GOD, Replace the Worldly definition of “Faith” with “TRUST”!

TRUST THE WORD, what it says plainly! No matter which Way The Wind Blows!

If It Rains on you, so what let it Rain, If The Rivers come Over Head, Let The Rivers Come, If The Storms Rages, Let It Rage! if Darkness over take you, Let It Come!
For Even The Darkness will Be A Light unto you, Just sit There! That Light Is Going to Come!

King James Bible
Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.
Yes I can see where faith can be defined as trust. This is from the definition in the OP…..

  1. “belief with the predominate idea of trust (or confidence) whether in God or in Christ, springing from faith in the same”

'And Abram said, "Behold, to me Thou hast given no seed:
and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir."
And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
This shall not be thine heir;
but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

Praise God!

Thank you
In Christ Jesus

Hello, Chris,

Please consider that Paul was comparing Abraham's faith to that of his CIRCUMCISION in the flesh.

The Bible speaks of Abraham OBEYING God and going where God said to go and the scripture says this even before faith is mentioned.

Yes, I just don’t get this notion that if I preach for one to have “faith” in Jesus Christ, it somehow means I am preaching “disobedience”.
Because you preach faith and you know that there is false doctrine about faith alone saying people.

You know people teach faith alone saves, but you are acting like you never heard of that.

People teach that we are saved by faith alone and that if we do anything else like repent of our sins---they teach that we then fell from grace and now have a works salvation.

They don't understand that Paul is speaking of our not having to do the purification works anymore.
I don’t see where the word “faith” in Jesus Christ suggests disobedience, but the opposite.
Because we are NOT saved by just faith alone and not repenting of our sins.
Faith is also defined as being faithful, and having moral fidelity, like a bride being faithful to her husband.

So to me, one who has faith in Jesus Christ will also be “faithful” in keeping His words, or else it is not really faith. At least, that is the way I see it.
Faith alone doesn't save and then if it was real faith the person will repent of their sins and do everything else Jesus says to do.

Faith alone is dead---Period!

That is Jesus teaching people to believe in him.

Jesus is teaching people who know they have to repent of their sins! He is preaching to the Jews who know they have to obey God. He is preaching to people who have been water baptized.

And it is important to note that those people did not receive the Holy Spirit yet because Jesus didn't die and ascend yet.

They still had to obey before they could get the Holy Spirit.

John 14:23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

Yes I can see where faith can be defined as trust. This is from the definition in the OP…..

  1. “belief with the predominate idea of trust (or confidence) whether in God or in Christ, springing from faith in the same”
Not the same, for the human definition can be Of Faith “Can be Distorted”!
Because Faith can also come under The “Banner” flapping in The wind “VAIN HOPE”!

If The Wind does Not Blow The way you wanted it to blow” Many not A Few Will walk away!
So blows The False Convert, and weakens The Real Convert, and “They are Blown By Every Wind and Doctrine!”

And They spill every where they go ! “for Even Barnabas was carry away by Their hypocrisy”!

“TRUST” is Taught “Through out” The Entirer BIBLe as “A Whole” and “GOD’s PEOPLE” has History “Etched” in Stone, In Failing To “TRUST IN GOD”

He said: “I Tested them in The Wilderness”!

When their water got low, They Showed me That They Didn’t “TRUST ME”

When The Meat got low, “They Still DID not TRUST ME,

In “Kadesh-Barnea” they did not “TRUST HIM”

And still in This Day And Age! We as His “Born from Above” People do not “TRUST IN GOD AND HIS CHRIST” for our thoughts and The Words that comes Out of Our Mouths “Betrays” all of us!

And I speak The TRUTH!

“I WILL STAND BEFORE “THE BEMA SEAT” of GOD WITH A BOW DOWN HEAD”. And will acknowledge “THE MERCY SEAT of “THE LORD, & THE ALMIGHTY GOD”!:pensive:

As I BOW BEFORE HIS FEET!
:pensive:

Pslams 2:12, portion:
“Happy are They who puts their “Trusts in GOD”

The whole world talks about having “faith”, that type of “faith” is also taught by “The Word of Faith” moment within Christianity.

But Simple: No matter what: in your defeat, “TRUST GOD” in The Mud and count it Joy, in your sickness count it joy, and Rejoice and still give The Priase! “TRUST HIM your very sickness is your victory” your death gives GOD the Glory!

31So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 3
