Read Carefully as this is YHVH speaking in Isaiah 48...

I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him: I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous (referring to Cyrus of Persia...but now continue).

16 Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord God, and his Spirit, hath sent me. (this is YHVH the Word/Son speaking)

17 Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.

See how all three are one and the same YHVH? The YHVH who comes or is sent (God's "me") IS YHVH...and is sent here from YHVH by or with His Spirit (who is also the one and only YHVH)...;.hence the Word is both with God and IS God....

We see this in the story of Abraham in the tents of Mamre where YHVH (in the form of a man breaking bread with him) sends forth the two angels to reign down fire and brimstone from YHVH who is in Heaven...even the Jewish Rabbis note this but some are confused thinking "does this mean two YHVH's?" However Jonathan ben-Ussiel in the 1st century and Onkelos in the 2nd both clarify this concept of the one YHVH being only one yet as more than one.

The Trinity is in all those passages. The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit. We know there are more than One making up the Lord because the word is Elohim. This is plural. " Let us make man in Our own image." Marriage is an example of the Trinity as well as 3 beings join as One.

It would be helpful if we defined what we mean by Trinity.

Now before you read this understand that the word "catholic" here means universal not specifically those true members of the body of Christ residing in Rome or under its See....Athanasius was of Alexandria....

Athanasian Creed

Whoever desires to be saved should above all hold to the catholic faith.
Anyone who does not keep it whole and unbroken will doubtless perish eternally.
Now this is the catholic faith:
That we worship one God in trinity and the trinity in unity,
neither blending their persons
nor dividing their essence.
For the person of the Father is a distinct person,
the person of the Son is another,
and that of the Holy Spirit still another.
But the divinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one,
their glory equal, their majesty coeternal.
What quality the Father has, the Son has, and the Holy Spirit has.
The Father is uncreated,
the Son is uncreated,
the Holy Spirit is uncreated.
The Father is immeasurable,
the Son is immeasurable,
the Holy Spirit is immeasurable.
The Father is eternal,
the Son is eternal,
the Holy Spirit is eternal.
And yet there are not three eternal beings;
there is but one eternal being.
So too there are not three uncreated or immeasurable beings;
there is but one uncreated and immeasurable being.
Similarly, the Father is almighty,
the Son is almighty,
the Holy Spirit is almighty.
Yet there are not three almighty beings;
there is but one almighty being.
Thus the Father is God,
the Son is God,
the Holy Spirit is God.
Yet there are not three gods;
there is but one God.
Thus the Father is Lord,
the Son is Lord,
the Holy Spirit is Lord.
Yet there are not three lords;
there is but one Lord.
Just as Christian truth compels us
to confess each person individually
as both God and Lord,
so catholic religion forbids us
to say that there are three gods or lords.
The Father was neither made nor created nor begotten from anyone.
The Son was neither made nor created;
he was begotten from the Father alone.
The Holy Spirit was neither made nor created nor begotten;
he proceeds from the Father and the Son.
Accordingly there is one Father, not three fathers;
there is one Son, not three sons;
there is one Holy Spirit, not three holy spirits.
Nothing in this trinity is before or after,
nothing is greater or smaller;
in their entirety the three persons
are coeternal and coequal with each other.
So in everything, as was said earlier,
we must worship their trinity in their unity
and their unity in their trinity.
Anyone then who desires to be saved
should think thus about the trinity.
But it is necessary for eternal salvation
that one also believe in the incarnation
of our Lord Jesus Christ faithfully.
Now this is the true faith:
That we believe and confess
that our Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son,
is both God and human, equally.
He is God from the essence of the Father,
begotten before time;
and he is human from the essence of his mother,
born in time;
completely God, completely human,
with a rational soul and human flesh;
equal to the Father as regards divinity,
less than the Father as regards humanity.
Although he is God and human,
yet Christ is not two, but one.
He is one, however,
not by his divinity being turned into flesh,
but by God's taking humanity to himself.
He is one,
certainly not by the blending of his essence,
but by the unity of his person.
For just as one human is both rational soul and flesh,
so too the one Christ is both God and human.
He suffered for our salvation;
he descended to hell;
he arose from the dead;
he ascended to heaven;
he is seated at the Father's right hand;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
At his coming all people will arise bodily
and give an accounting of their own deeds.
Those who have done good will enter eternal life,
and those who have done evil will enter eternal fire.
This is the catholic faith:
one cannot be saved without believing it firmly and faithfully.

the Holy Spirit is God.
Yet there are not three gods;
there is but one God.
Thus the Father is Lord,
the Son is Lord,
the Holy Spirit is Lord.
Yet there are not three lords;
there is but one Lord.
Just as Christian truth compels us
to confess each person individually
as both God and Lord,
so catholic religion forbids us
to say that there are three gods or lords.
The Father was neither made nor created nor begotten from anyone.
The Son was neither made nor created;
he was begotten from the Father alone.
The Holy Spirit was neither made nor created nor begotten;
he proceeds from the Father and the Son.
Accordingly there is one Father, not three fathers;
there is one Son, not three sons;
there is one Holy Spirit, not three holy spirits.
Nothing in this trinity is before or after,
nothing is greater or smaller;
in their entirety the three persons
are coeternal and coequal with each other.
So in everything, as was said earlier,
we must worship their trinity in their unity
and their unity in their trinity.
Anyone then who desires to be saved
should think thus about the trinity.
But it is necessary for eternal salvation
that one also believe in the incarnation
of our Lord Jesus Christ faithfully.
Now this is the true faith:
That we believe and confess
that our Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son,
is both God and human, equally.
He is God from the essence of the Father,
begotten before time;
and he is human from the essence of his mother,
born in time;
completely God, completely human,
with a rational soul and human flesh;
equal to the Father as regards divinity,
less than the Father as regards humanity.
He suffered for our salvation;
he descended to hell;
he arose from the dead;
he ascended to heaven;
he is seated at the Father's right hand;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
At his coming all people will arise bodily
and give an accounting of their own deeds.
Those who have done good will enter eternal life,
and those who have done evil will enter eternal fire.
This is the catholic faith:
one cannot be saved without believing it firmly and faithfully.
Ok, if that's how we are defining it I have to disagree with the concept. I'm quite familiar with this creed and I dont believe it is accurate. I think they went far astray of the Nicene Creed that proceeded it. I also find it troubling that they claim unless on believes this they cannot be saved. That sends up red flags. There were many before this Creed who didnt hold these things. Those holding the Nicene Creed didint hold these things. The Nicene Creed says that Jesus is true God out of True God. They believed that Jesus came out of the Father. Thus, they didnt hold to the position that Jesus existed as.a person from eternity past.

This creed also claims that there are three coequal coeternal persons but one God. We don't find anything like this in Scripture.

Yes I realize the fineries and subtle differences of some of the definitions of the Trinity....But I believe the Nicene creed if read properly says Jesus is the Son who was "incarnate" of God and Mary...He was not Jesus until the incarnation (but always the Son) but this does not change the idea that the one and only God IS the Father and IS the Word/Son and IS the Spirit, thus both of these express the Tri-une nature of the one God. Do we at least agree that the One God is the Father, the Son, and the Spirit?

Hi Br. Paul

No, I don't agree with that position. The position I hold is that which the apostle Paul states. 'To us there is one God, the Father'. I understand the word God or Theos as a title meaning Deity. The Father is Deity and His Son is Deity also. They are not the same person or being. They are two separate beings. As the Nicene Creed says, Jesus is True God "out of" True God. They believed that Jesus, the Son, came out of the Father. I agree with that position. Jesus Himself said that He came out of God. I don't hold the Holy Spirit to he a third person but rather a limited manifestation of the Father.

Right...I know...where I believe as Deity there is only ONE GOD (the Bible is so clear on this point) in three persons (not one person but clearly not three Deities)) and I k now how difficult this is for humans to grasp. Then I found the Nicene thinking (summarized in the 4th century 'Cappadocian solution') of one Ousia in three hypostases clearly explained this truly Nicean position. It is also found in the earliest Targums of the Jewish Tradition (they not believing the two Messiah figures are one OR that they were Jesus). We of course believe they are one person (Messiah) who comes twice, and that Jesus was/is this person....

If only the Father is God then the Son is not God and Neither is the Spirit. One God in three persons allows for them being one in essence but not in person, i.e., the Father is not given and neither the Father or the Spirit are crucified. The Son glorifies the Father (and makes Him known to us) while the Spirit glorifies the Son and bears Him witness along with the Father.

I believe it's hard to grasp because it's a logical contradiction. The man who is credited with coining the term Trinity as it pertains to God is Tertullian and he argued that Jesus and the Father are two separate beings. Both are Deity, however, the Father is the ultimate God or Deity. There is none equal to Him. Even the Son is not equal to the Father. When Paul says there is one God he speaks of authority. The Father is the ultimate authority or Deity. Even Jesus said the Father is the only true God.

I would submit that there are just two. We can see from Scripture that the Holy Spirit is actually the Father. We see this in Luke and Jesus states it plainly.

The very reference in the Bible to the Trinity is Genesis 1:24‭-26 NKJV
Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Can anyone spot it?
