Is the human soul mortal or immortal?

14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see
: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. (1 Tim. 6:14-16 KJV)

According to Paul, the Father alone has immortality.

According to Paul, the Father alone has immortality.

I tend to believe 1 Tim 6:15 is about Jesus, not the Father. As Jesus is the King of King and Lord of Lords.
But even so.... None of us humans are immortal... yet.

John 6:39; "This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.
John 6:40; "For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day."
John 6:44; "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
John 6:54; "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

When a person's physical body dies -- it becomes immortal. the Spirit / Soul of the person lives on.

Brother-Paul, the flesh body does not have any thing to do with the soul/spirit other than being the abode for soul/spirit while passing through God’s plan of salvation. Many believe that this flesh body is the life of us. Not so, the soul/spirit is the real life of man. Although the flesh body has life, it is very temporal and will return to dust.

It reminds me of people who have had near death experiences. I believe their experiences are real and I also believe that the human soul is immortal.

That's gnosticism

Man has a physical (carnal) mind that needs to be renewed by the Word of God, and man also has a "spiritual" (mind of Christ) that never needs renewing. The soul of man is his personality, and where the power of choice resides. Man can either choose to follow his carnal fleshly mind or the mind of Christ. Being single-minded is having both the physical mind and the mind of Christ in agreement. Being "double-minded" is having the mind of Christ, and the carnal mind in disagreement.

Hi B-A-C,

I can't be about Jesus. It says who no has seen nor can see. People have seen Jesus. No one can see the Father.

14 that thou keep the commandment, without spot, without reproach, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: 15 which in its own times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 16 who only hath immortality, dwelling in light unapproachable; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and power eternal. Amen. (1 Tim. 6:1 ASV)

Paul says that Jesus will show who this one is.

Hekuran, how you get Gnosticism out of the simple statements I made about the soul/spirit is beyond me. I see absolutely no relationship.

Yes, it IS about Jesus -- oops didn't get the original post.

This is the original post -- "Him who sent Me" God sending Jesus Christ.

Both the Father and the Son are being talked about.

I've just been "googling" Gnosticism and Still not sure what it is. And, yes, it was widespread early on and probably now as well. A lot of false teachings are abounding.

Apparently it's that salvation is based on personal experience which may not be according to Scriptural teachings. Apparently that if something is 'real' to Me then no one can really question 'it'. .

Amongst the Dead Sea Scrolls were the Gnostic Gospels = false Gospel.

Hekuran -- how do you define gnosticism.

I can't speak for Hekuran, but generally it's the idea that everyone is divine.
Jesus was God in a human body. Christians believe that.
Gnosticism says we are all gods in a human body.

One of the central beliefs of Mormonism is that you become a god when you die.
Jesus had a "godly father" who once someone elses son. Now Jesus is "the son" and he is the god of this world.
When you die you will become "the god" of a planet, so you can have many wives and populate that planet with your "children" in more ways than one.
Mormons believe Jesus had sex with Mary Magdelene (even though they believe they weren't married).
Many main stream Protestant (I can't speak for the Roman Catholics) call the Mormon's the "god makers" as they believe many of them will become gods.

Gnosticism usually believes there is a "higher God", but the rest of us humans are simply "lesser gods" in human bodies.

It isn't far from what some are teaching here on TalkJesus.

One interesting thing about the Mormon concept.. is for a long time, black (African) people could never become gods, only white people,
that has recently changed in the last 50 or 60 years. Some Mormon's believe women cannot become gods, only men. The womans place
is to procreate and populate the planet. (There seems to be some division in the church over this).

Here's a simple account of gnosticism in the church today

It's the heretical elevation of the spirit and denial of the body. It's likely that the later New Testament letters - John's letters - were written to combat an early form of gnosticism in the church.

Hi Sue,

Gnosticism is the blending of Greek Philosphy with Christian doctrine. There were different sects of Gnosticism. A basic tennet of all sects is that the flesh is inherently evil and the spirit (supposed human spirit) is good. The ultimate goal in life for a Gnostic was to escape the evil flesh and ascend through the heavens to the fullness (pleroma) or the ultimate god. Since the flesh was considered evil there were two lines of thinking. Some groups punished the flesh and some indulged it. Those indulging it argued that since the flesh was disposable and had no real connection to the spirit it didnt matter what they did in the flesh. That's the basic idea. There is a lot more to it. There were so many different ideas that Irenaeus, an early Christian leader, wrote 5 volumes refuting it. A lot of the teachings that Gnostics held are held by some Christian's today

Beresheet -- I'm well aware of the passage you're talking about regarding the milk of the Word and then the meat of the Word.

I'm well beyond the 'milk'. I've been digesting the meat of God's Word for a long time. So there's no need for you to patrionize me. No need to pat me on my head and suggest I starting 'growing' up spiritually.

As I've already commented -- some of the other posters have recognized Mormonistic beliefs in your comments. And one poster has recently suggested Gnosticism as to your beliefs. I tend to agree with the Mormonism -- meaning that That's where you get your beliefs from. And That is Not part of God's Word. It is Not the meat of God's Word. It IS false teaching.

Sue it really surprises me as well read as you are that you are not able see what I’ve tried to explain but it came to me that you are only well read in the milk, the baby food of Gods word. How precious the baby food of Gods word is, it is so heart warming, and that’s what baby Christians cut their teeth on when they begin to eat of the manna of Gods word.

But once you have the milk of Gods word down and solidified in your heart and mind, then get into the strong meat of Gods word. God demands it. He doesn’t say maybe you should learn it, He says give them strong meat. Hew 5:13-14. For every one that useth milk is UNSILLFUL in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age,.

Got to admit that the strong meat of Gods word can be a little ugly at times but it makes Christian warriors out of the men and women of God. Not knowing the strong meat, it is very likely one will worship anti christ, thinking he is the true christ. It’s that important my friends.

The soul/spirit of flesh man is immortal compared to the flesh body. God has told us that flesh cannot inherit the kingdom of God. So it’s back to dust it will go. Thus far, out of all the sons of God, that God created from the very beginning, only the Elects souls/spirits have been elevated to the status of eternal life or deathlessness. God rewarded the Elect with eternal life shortly after Satan’s rebellion. The Elect was that one third that sided and fought long side God to put Satan and his bunch back in line at that attempted coup. God rewarded their courageous act of valor, with elevating their soul/spirt to eternal life. God knows He can count on them cause they have been battle proven.
That not meat.

Butch5, I know that’s not meat, it’s called waking someone up. The topics I try to explain deal with strong meat. The meat is so important in the end times, without meat one will make grave mistakes against God’s word, endangering their very soul. And they will commit these grave mistakes unbeknownst to them, all cause they never solidified the strong meat in their heart and mind.

You all can pin any title you want on my beliefs but it just you alls opinion. I could tag your all with some titles since you all don’t what I’m talking about for the most part and everything I talk on is in the good ole King James Bible.

Since you are the authority here please tell me what the milk of Gods word is and what the strong meat of Gods word is. Point it out to me. Or if you like, just point out a few pieces of strong meat on the good ole King James Bible. God was more concerned about His followers getting the strong meat than the baby food. Any Christian can absorb baby food rather quickly. When you think about it, it’s just good ole common sense using just the ten laws God wants us to abide by.

You keep throwing the Mormon title at me and I’m not a Mormon. Was part of that church as a young child cause that where my parents took me. I basically knew nothing in detail of their teaching other than the baby food taught from the KJB. I’m a non denominational Christian. There is just one word, just one Christ, just one God and I seek all three.
