Loving your neighbor as your self

Mark 12:31

The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

So what does it look like to love your neighbor as yourself? Because if you do not Love your neighbor as your self you are breaking the commandment. I fail short of this every day. God forgive me.

The greatest example I can find in scripture of loving your neighbor as your self would be from brother Paul. Paul to me is saying in the verse he would be willing to go to hell for his brothers if it would save them. Sorry I simply could not do that. I wish no one goes to hell, and I preach the gospel everywhere I go, but I am not taking anyone’s place in hell, I fail to love my neighbor as myself.

Romans 9:1-33 I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.

The book of Acts is another great example of what it truly means IMO of what loving thy neighbor as yourself looks like.

Acts 2:45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.

Ok I sell a ton of stuff and give it to expand the kingdom of God and help the poor, but do I sell all my stuff nope I have failed to be perfect I failed to love thy neighbor as myself perfectly. As Jesus said.

Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.

Now how about another example . In my truck I carry homeless bags with me everywhere I go. I stuff them with various items depending on the time of year and such, the most important thing I put in there is a tract on salvation and Jesus. The second thing I put in the bags is information to local Christian ministries that may be able to help. When I give these homeless people the bag I fail to love them as my self, God forgive me. Because If I was to love them as myself I would not give them a bag, I would take them home with me feed them and clothe them and help them get back on their feet. I fail to love thy neighbor as myself.

Hopefully this clears up any confusions on what I meant when I said we all fail to love our neighbor as our selves. , I should of said I fail this everyday instead of ”we”.

I see loving my neighbor almost easy. I see loving my neighbor as myself on a whole different level that is much more difficult IMO.

Example of loving my neighbor giving the homeless guys a bag with goodies.
Example of loving my neighbor as myself, taking homeless guy home with me and feeding him and helping him get on his feet.

Mr Bear I am sorry you thought I was judging others and putting myself on a pedestal in that other thread, I just do not have great writing skills and it must of come across as something completely different then what I was trying to communicate. Hoping this thread clears that up

"I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he is!.

I try to remember this to help keep myself humble at all things, o yea by posting things that I do I am in danger of pride I truly do not want to be prideful in this posting. Anytime I speak of my self I fear of being prideful. becuase when you are prideful I doubt you can actually see it for yourself.

I stand corrected !! the greatest example of Loving my neighbor as myself is Jesus Christ dying for my sins on the Cross.

Will you die for me will I die for you?

, I pray to God we never have to find out.

Greetings Dave M,

Mr Bear I am sorry you thought I was judging others and putting myself on a pedestal in that other thread, I just do not have great writing skills and it must of come across as something completely different then what I was trying to communicate. Hoping this thread clears that up

I have re-read this post of yours and see that you are asking forgiveness and suggesting that your communication skills are lacking. However i want to assure you that i am the one who has wronged you by not expressing my thoughts clearly, by my lack of communication skills and that i ask your forgiveness for any confusion or ill feeling that i may have created towards you.
I sincerely am sorry Brother.

I wanted to share some things with you after reading you post where you mentioned loving your neighbour. In my excitement as i tappity-tapped the keyboard, I obviously messed up communicating clearly that i was not singling you out or having a personal go at you.
I appreciate what you write and am always glad to see you online. One day we might meet in person... and one day we will, together with the saints. What a wonderful day that will be because together we we see our Lord and King, Jesus Christ the Son of God, the Son of Man, the Lamb of God and our Saviour and eternal Friend.

Bless you Brother ....><>

hmm is a tough one because, in case of homeless people, some are in situations where they would rather be homeless than have a home cos they on drugs. You can't really know because each one is individual. I think you do what you can and pray for them and if they are actually hungry and thirsty and need clothes give them, but also tell them about Jesus, and that God can forgive them.

I now see a lot of beggars in the street that never ever used to be before, not all are homeless, but then there are rich wealthy people that do turn a blind eye because they have holiday homes sitting empty while people are out in the cold. If you don't have room you don't have room but consider if you do have a spare room hosting people or even a boarder who might be grateful for the accomodation. Maybe they could do some work for you in return for food and board. I think its shocking that there's so much inequality now with rich getting richer and poor poorer, and not always their fault, some people are quick to judge cos they didn't work hard or lazy, or the rich act entitled etc.

James writes in his letter about caring for orphans and widows - they are the most vulnerable homeless. In the case of men, some choose to be, they actually do have families but maybe they running away from them. It does pay to find out what their story is, but beware that a few will try and spin you a line. In any case, we do have a home in heaven for every believer so you can definitely know our Father provides that for everyone.

To me these are more great examples of loving my neighbor as myself.

John 15:13
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

1 John 3:16
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.

Romans 5:8
But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Luke 6:27
“But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

Hard to believe that this does actually gets easier the closer I get to God IMO. When things like this happen in my life and I look back to how I was and I shout for Joy and know that Christ has Changed me !!! Thank you Christ !!

Loving yourself is a direct relationship to having Jesus in you. God says he wishes for you to love your Neighbor in the same way but, it also may be and I don't see anywhere it says you must like them!

Amen! I was reminded of Proverbs 16:7, which says "When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him."

Wayyyy back in the day when my husband and I first got together, I had a nasty time with his ex-wife. It didn't help that I was young and had never seen first-hand a divorce situation, let alone been involved in one. I was still a babe in Christ when I came across that verse and thought, 'okay, I can't deal with his ex's shenanigans, but if my ways please You, Lord, I won't have to.' And looking back at the (over 20 years) big picture, I can say I ultimately proved the truth of that verse, all glory to God.

Loving yourself is a direct relationship to having Jesus in you. God says he wishes for you to love your Neighbor in the same way but, it also may be and I don't see anywhere it says you must like them!

True enough! Now that you've reminded me, I've heard a couple different preachers make that distinction. :)

I love this writing. Each time I read something about loving our neighbor, I remember the love that Jesus Christ show to all of us.Jesus has been an example of true love and we who claim to serve or follow him should show love at all time. Take away hatred and let true love reigns.

I live in a country where it is difficult for even Christians to show love, but I can tell you that those who are truly call by Christ are considering others.

In my home , we make food readily to those who come to ask for food because they are hungry and have no money to buy food. Each Sunday,we give food to people attending service because most of them come here empty stomach. We are not rich, but we try to show the love of Jesus Christ to people..Any of you that has visited Africa will know that there is much hatred when you belong to a different denomination .Even if they are not teaching the truth, they feel you should join them .Whereby you fail to walk with them, they see you as an enemy. God wants believers to show true love even when things are not walking too well.
I pray that God will help us to show true love to others as we walk with hi.

1 Corinthians 13: 1-13
1If I speak in the tonguesa of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,b but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

I love 1 Corinthians 13. There is so much here to talk about and the verse 13 is of most importance. Love is the greatest...everything good in your life has some form of love attached to it. This famous verse we have read it or heard some preacher preach it many times. But, I would, in the context of this thread, like to offer a more spiritual aspect of it:
  • Faith is the very beginning of our spiritual growth but there is no need of it in heaven because it has accomplished everything and been totally realized.
  • Hope comes after Faith but is not needed in heaven because just being there it has been accomplished as well.
  • love is the greatest because it exists in heaven in it's perfected form....it is the only one of the three that endures for eternity!

Great quote brother. There is nothing true Christians no matter their race or where they live need more that love. True love never faint nor fade. Jesus Himself is an example of perfect and true love to believers. Remember He gave himself as a ransom, so we can have eternal life.

I have shared your post with two people who are serving the Lord in the Eastern part of Nigeria. If they had the means to join, they will do so.But I will continue to share writings that edifies the body of Christ as get them from other believers.
God bless you .

Please every true Christian should be your brother's keeper. Show love and concern when someone is having challenges in life. Pray for the person and assist if you have the means to do so. The love we show will be rewarded by God.In my bible study class or in my teaching,I always remind people that Jesus showed mankind the love that the world cannot give or show, so we have to follow the footstep of Jesus Christ in everything we do.

God bless you.

Yes,God expect us to show kindness at all time. There many Christians here in Africa who needs true sermons and to meet with people who are trusting in the Lord completely, but they do not have such opportunity. So if you have opportunity, then share the Word and show kindness.

Hello. When you say it is tough, are you saying there is nothing the Lord cannot do? He gives man the power to do good when we are walking completely with Him. Thank you.
I will share my experience when I can so you will see how God gives us grace to help even when you think you cannot do.

So what does it look like to love your neighbor as yourself?

When reading the initial opening to this thread and your above question. What came to mind was the parable of the Good Samaritan.

But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? And Jesus answering said, A certain [man] went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded [him], and departed, leaving [him] half dead. 31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked [on him], and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion [on him], And went to [him], and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave [them] to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
Luke 10:29-37

A changed heart of the believer, looks at others with compassion and acts upon it. We don't do it to follow a Commandment, for if we do it becomes no different than why the individual who initially posed the question of "who is my neighbor" to our Lord. A Commandment grants us understanding of what is needed, but should not be what motivates us to act. Otherwise, in accordance with what I understand from 1 Corinthians 13, we'll come to understand the why, but fail to communicate the most important part of Christ in us and that is to show and give the World, which is His Love. Which is found in and through the very Gospel we speak of to an unbelieving World.

I mean think about it. If the person we are helping were to ask us "Why are you doing this?". Do we say "Because Jesus has commanded us to do so." or "Because it's a commandment of God's for me to do so"?

While in truth one should be able to say. "It's because, if I were in your situation or one of my children. I would hope that you would do the same." "However, even if you wouldn't. I would still do this." "You might now be asking yourself why then do it if you're getting nothing from it?", "I can tell you, because my Lord Jesus Christ gave me the Greatest Gift, His all for me and for you. He gave His life for while I did nothing to deserve it, He died upon that Cross."

Also, to let your know as I'm sure you have found out by the examples you have stated in your post. Which I say Alleluia to brother! Sometimes, we do something without complete understanding of why, but still that we must. There really is no better way of doing something than allowing the Holy Spirit to guide you to it and in it.

With the Love of Christ Jesus Dear Brother.
