What does the Bible say about denominations?

I think if a church teaches correctly and does not divert the truth of the Bible in anyway ,then it does not matter about the name or denomination of the church, I believe that some church organisations twist the true word of the Bible and that is the main thing that all Christians should be aware of.

But, the needed unity will never come by simply talking with one another to iron out differences. The unity must be in God, or it will be meaningless. This is what the tower of Babel (confusion) should teach us. The builders of that tower were in unity of purpose, but it was not God's purpose. If each us leans heavily of the Lord continuously, He will bring us toward and into the unity that is needed. He surely does use discussions such as these, but ultimately it is all in Him.

Sorry Spiritleded i have to disagree. In John 4, when Jesus spoke to the Samaritan, He plain out said "salvation is of the Jews". I believe He called the Jews a denom. simply because you see the Samaritan lady and her people were worshipping God too. !
I do not think that is correct. The samaritans worshipped... but i do not think it is right to say that they worshipped God.

I'm disappointed that the local Nazarene church has taken up theistic evolution.
Curious brother.
What was their previous position as regards to Creation? Also, were you able to find out why they decided at this time to move into what I'm assuming is a different direction?

The Samaritans were definitely a mixed bag. They did worship Jehovah, but not only Jehovah. See II Kings chapter 17 and the final verse of that chapter with regard to them:

"So these nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children's children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day." II Kings 17:41

The pastor here is a friend, we fished together until he got arthritis. He just didn't ever get into evolution beyond high school days, and had no direction from superiors to catch up on that. We talked Jesus and fishing. Now it's part of policy in their position papers to not oppose evolution, but not to bring it up either. If brought up, then endorse it like the Catholics do. We kept our times together a fun time fishing, no science other than black bassing, no religion, no politics.

big mistake endorsing evolution. the bible clearly teaches that death entered the world through sin. sin entered the world through adam. adam was created 6,000 years ago.
the entire bible, the very gospel itself, has its foundation in the first few chapters of genesis. not only is evolution in direct contradiction to Jesus and His belief in the authority of scripture, but there is absolutely no scientific evidence for it. science proves the opposite = life is irreducibly complex, and mutations cause a downward spiral and loss of function (not an upward trend with increasing function).

Dear brother.
With difficulty friendship, and being the Shepherd of God's flock should never be a reason to prevent the conversation of biblical truth to be discussed. Who better to talk to than a friend? What does scripture say in Proverbs 27:9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel. So who better to have discussed this with? A friend should be able both to offer and receive encouragement and loving criticism.

Whenever the discussion of Creationism & Evolution come up. I suggest the following book. However, I will warn you. It is not for the faint of heart!

Title: The Long War Against God - The history and impact of the creation/evolution conflict.
Author: Dr. Henry Morris

For some odd reason, it seems that in our own incomplete knowledge of scripture, that we willingly give up the position of truth! As our brother Taylor said in his post

the entire bible, the very gospel itself, has its foundation in the first few chapters of genesis.

We give up the high ground when due to our lack of knowledge and inability to "scientifically" discuss a position contrary to Biblical truth. We acquiesce to the others position. Instead we should accept that we do not know everything and hold faithfully to what the Word of God says. If we do not. Then it leaves open every other belief including Christ to disputation. For if we are wrong there, why not in the resurrection? or the blind being healed, the lame to walk etc.?

In this subject, always remember since the beginning of time, Godhood (Nature or essence of being divine) of God has been questioned. Especially in this area concerning His Creation. Yet every contrary position has eventually fallen by the way side as it has been disproven and then another position will spring up to take its place. The devil does not have quit in him. The only constant has been Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

If you ever decide to read the aforementioned book, you'll have to let me know what you think. It might even be something to give to your Pastor/Friend. Might not change the position that the church has decided to take, but might open up support for Biblical truth as seen in Genesis.

I agree. I've been a promoter of creation science many years. I've read almost all the books authored by staff at ICR.org, kept up with it all. It's sad many preachers have no background or interest in science, will not touch anything science.

I've found that there are many preachers who do a great job preaching the gospel, who know Genesis inside and out, that is what God says there. It isn't necessary to push creation science to accomplish Jesus' great commandment. But bringing up opposition to evolution easily and quickly alienates young minds that consider a gospel preacher rejecting evolution is too foolish to matter, so they are cut off over that alone, then impossible to preach the gospel to.

My 35 year working career was natural science based, in the outdoors, except for two years of Bible college training when some preachers believed I was being called to pastor. I've lay preached (volunteer basis only) since then. Most of my years concerned restoration and maintenance of wildlife habitat, specializing in wetlands research and management. I have retired from fed govt, but retain private consultant businesses, mostly planning and construction of private fishing club lakes and duck clubs, helping to locate eligible lands that can be purchased and developed. I worked alongside atheists, avowed evolutionists, and some Christians, all in many science fields that had to do with my own fields. We had just enough discussions about the Bible and science to realize we first had to live peaceably as much as possible, be professional. Romans 12:17-18 (KJV) 17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. 18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

I lived Christ in me before all, always, prospered working like that, enabling me to be a significant support to ministries. Some inquired about what made me tick, and listened to my testimony. The Lord knows the outcomes, as I didn't cross paths with most of those people again, each project a different team, different state.

I've been highly interested in all sciences since a little boy in the 1950's, a fan of Darwin from 10th grade high school until the year I was saved at 31. I didn't know a single person that believed otherwise. I never had no problem with Genesis, not linking that to opposition to evolution. Of course all that changed rapidly back then. Only high school and college professors ever ridiculed

You and I know the Genesis accounts are very basic and essential, foundational to Christianity. Special creation less than 10,000 years ago is being proved through genetics alone. Disbelieving any part of the old or new testament as being the truth from God is extremely dangerous, fostering distrust in many other parts of it, if not the whole of it. I have learned the hard way to reserve discussing the science of it until I know a person is well grounded in Christ, unmovable. Jesus is not on record admitting fossils are mostly from the Genesis flood, or that dinosaur remains were only a few thousand years old. Nothing about DNA was discussed. Nobody knew about unmineralized blood components in T. Rex bones and other species remains and still elastic tissues from animals believed extinct millions of years ago.

I have many friends who took up ministry for their careers, some retired now. I disagree with some of them doctrinally over really what amounts to minor differences. I went full gospel, but many are dear So. Baptist friends who are not safe even thinking about tongues or casting out demons, etc. They preach Christ crucified and risen, teach what the Jesus and the apostles taught. They don't need to be versed in creation science. All of us were brainwashed about evolution in grade school and college and even Bible classes, as it turns out even by a few atheist professors of theology. I don't think anyone actually believes that stuff, hopes to forget about it.

Here on the web we don't know each other, won't likely share watching the Thunders and eating popcorn, working on a friend's upcoming sermon series during commercials, or planning a fishing trip. All my friends are saved, we love the Lord. Out of maybe 800 people attending their churches (and mine) in a two county area I doubt there are 5 that could define evolution or creation science. It isn't a topic "out there". But many will testify about what Jesus did for them. So I disagree that it is vital to demand adherence to the science side of Genesis creation and the world-wide flood. The theology around Genesis is sufficient for the vast majority. Preach the gospel, my friend. If any be contentious about the Bible account, then is the time to discuss that.

As for the Nazarene position statement, it's simply a directive froma page from their Olivet University site at
Olivet Nazarene University :: Theistic Evolution
"(3) Evolution and Creation Please be careful how you hear what i am about to say. The Christian faith and some understandings of evolution are not necessarily incompatible. However, i want to be very clear in saying that not every articulation of evolution will do; not at all. That is to say, evolution must be understood in certain ways to be compatible with Christian faith. Well, what does that mean? The Christian affirmation of God as Creator affirms God as initially creating, but also continually sustaining, actively interacting, and purposefully directing creation to its culmination. All things come from Him, exist in Him, and move to Him. (Col. 1:15–17; Acts 17:24–31). evolution, if it is to be held by a Christian, must be considered as a methodology of divine creation within that broader Biblical context."

I can't take time to learn when or why they adopted theistic evolution. As for my pastor friend, he had no such training about that, will not study it or discuss it. He mainly preaches the New Testament.

Sister Melanie,Your heart is in love!( 1 cor 13:7!!) And does not divert in any way! KEY!( 1 tim 4:1-16!!) Many Churches have become nothing more then clubs! A place of isolation from other believers! This was not meant to be so! But when man gives place to the enemy( eph 4:27) clubs from Churches can indeed be formed! So when you are looking for a church, what are you looking for really? I was told sometimes I get to wordy lol,so will take note of that! Find a church where love is the central theme in the church,by all means pray before going to check out a church, where your part in the body of Christ can fit the other parts! And finally know this in your heart! The purpose for going in the first place is to learn how to become and REMAIN a true servant in the Body of Christ! You are not going to agree with all subject matter in the church, but learn from this,do not gossip, among others,be the example in Christ Jesus to each other, there by encouraging the other parts to stay working even as you are paying close attention to your own part! Not to wordy i hope!! LOL

@Dovegiven

The curiosity to me has always been unless you're in the ministry of apologetics why the discussion of Creationism vs Evolution is ever brought up to an unbeliever anyway? I'm sure you would agree that the presentation of the Gospel does not require the necessity of this.

Yet for a denomination to set as doctrine to accommodate a false narrative for me is a bit too much. Of cause the kicker is "....within that broader Biblical context." Select the broader context and you'll find your truth!

The hope I guess is to circumnavigate the "evolutionist" disbelief by telling them seen within the greater context of "God" all things are possible. And when certain portions of evolutionary studies change or are disproven. The doctrine doesn't have to change. The reply can always be "The issue is on the part of Science and not the Bible." Increase the storehouse of knowledge and the end results can change for Science. While the Bible is unchanging in its description of Creation."

It's awesome that you have your testimony ready so as to be able to tell those who ask. Why you believe as you believe. It is during these times that the seed is planted or watered, which ever the case maybe. So that in hope, prayer that at some future time that person might be moved by the Holy Spirit to leave the darkness they aren't even aware they reside in. Into the light that shines brilliantly throughout this world by and for Christ Jesus. Which truly will allow one as I'm sure you're aware of. To see a creation that in truth reflects the Glory of God!

Thank-you brother for sharing a bit of your life.

Isaiah 25:1 O LORD, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.

Excellent guidance, especially to pray before going to any assembly by whatever name. Sometimes that's not available, a church needing some "fresh blood" loving folks to join.
For many years I had to fly into almost all the states weekly to join work teams, often having to stay over spanning 2-3 weeks in a stretch. I rented a pickup if possible, then drove from the nearest airport to a usually very small town in farm or ranch territory, staying at often the only motel or a bed N breakfast cottage. Whenever having to spend the weekend I always found a church to attend. All of them (hundreds) across America were very much like home. All had their cliques. Tiny churches might be one clique, wary of strangers, showing very reserved "love" for anyone not from there. The bigger the church, the more cliques and better welcome, some "redneck" groups sitting together, some "businessmen" cliques usually in the front right corner pews, cowboy cliques in the back pews, blue collar cliques in the middle right. Whichever clique is drawn to you will approach first, while all the others gather in their own gathering spots, even parking separately. People driving a new Mercedes don't ark where a dirty farm pickup door might hit theirs. I just love our American churches! I want to love them into fellowship. A stranger can do that easier than someone that's about as much a part of the place as a brick in the church wall, having nothing to live down, not yet judged except perhaps by model of vehicle, race, or clothing. People are people, and many go to church because that's what folks are supposed to do. Love them!

I am convinced it is normal human nature, a bit too much flesh, not a matter of not loving. It's easy to love people "like" you, people you have known all your life that you still like. Folks just don't seem to have enough training or experience to love someone new. They want to grow into that once they figure you out.

I tell all that to say I acted on good advice to be the one to show friendliness, to be outgoing, to show love at any opportunity. I always put a check in the offering, which got the ushers smiling and thanking me after service. That was a good start anywhere in the country. The Lord might pick out a couple that doesn't seem fitting there themselves, so I would target them asking where's a good place to eat. When they would suggest something, I always invited them there, making sure they knew it was on me. Often a whole clique would insist on hosting me instead. Many times later my room phone would ring, everyone in town knowing where the stranger is staying. "Do ya fish? Let me take you fishing next week." I fish whenever I can :D There was yet another fishing buddy, hardly ever seen again, but very good fellowship and some really great home cooking, and many a home Bible study. I never stayed around any place long enough to figure out how to break into other cliques quickly, especially driving a rented pickup needed to get around job sites, in places there were no car washes. However, once one clique accepted me, the "club" of cliques (the church congregation) would warm up a bit the next Sunday. Preachers occasionally would call me out with "I hear you know the Bible, Brother, so come on up here and say some words. You know you are "in" when he tells you a few minutes later from the front pew to "take as much time as you can". That's when hands of all cliques are offered leaving the sanctuary. I exercised "violence" rather than draw back.
Matthew 11:12 (KJV) 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

Press in, make things happen for the Lord, never waiting for someone else to make a move towards loving.
Showing love, always at least friendliness, being a helper, volunteering, being generous, always at peace with all as much as possible, teaches people how to express the love of God in us.

I appreciate your observation. I was one of them, knowing no better. If a Christian had pressured me about evolution being wrong before I was saved, I might never have had another thing to do with one, thinking them too ignorant to be useful. Evolutionists are made. Schools make people that way, there being no alternative explanation of life.to consider. My high school science teachers were self proclaimed Christians, yet wholeheartedly embraced evolution. Now there is a huge alternative with the explosion of knowledge from creation scientists.

It became very apparent to me about 1990, after listening and reading contributions by the early creations scientists, it was unwise to bring up evolution whenever having opportunity to preach the gospel, seeking to lead folks to Jesus. Later it might happen to be appropriate to discuss that topic with youths. I believe the top positions of denominations realize that too. They are under a lot of pressure to keep members focused on the fundamentals, without complicating the Bible education process by bringing in a highly volatile science issue. You would have to go back and re-educate most adults about basics of science first, things they forgot long ago.

Another reason I think probably most if not all denominations wish to avoid mentioning CvE is because of the few that keep up, those realize science changes daily, and we are learning of more and more destruction of evolutionary tenets. It pays sometimes to just let the deceived lose their basis of unbelief.

If you're not a fan of American football this may not make sense...

I was watching some high school athletes after a football games. I'm exaggerating some here to make a point, but please hear me out.

The linemen say...
Those receivers are useless, all they ever do is catch the ball, they never throw it, they hardly ever run with it, they can't block very good, what use are they? Everyone knows a good line is what makes a good team.

The running backs say...
The quarterbacks are way over-rated. They rarely run with the ball, they never catch the ball, they can't block, about the only thing they are good for is throwing the ball. Everyone knows a good running back is what makes a good team.

The receivers say...
The running backs hardly ever catch the the ball or throw the ball. How useless is that? Everyone knows a good receiver is what makes a good team.

The quarterback says....
(well, I think you get the point)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I wonder if the church isn't the same way?

Those baptists, the only thing they're good for is baptizing people. They don't know about God.
Those pentecostals, all they do is speak in tongues, they don't really know about God.
Those evangelicals, all they do is missions work, they don't really know God either.
Those lutherans, they are all about liturgy and rituals, they don't really know God.

Maybe we're all on the same team here?
Maybe the only way some people come to God is because they believe in once saved always saved.
Maybe others only come to God because they they have the fear of losing their salvation.
Maybe some get saved by grace alone. Maybe it requires obedience for others.
All this has been argues a million times and likely will be argued again.
But at the end of the day do these things really matter if we are acting like Christians
and living as Christ did? No matter how we got there.
Maybe we are all more on the same team than we think we are.
Maybe God uses different expressions of the church to reach different kinds of people.
Maybe God is a lot less concerned with how they come to Him, than the fact that they did.
