Christ Alone is Righteous

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law

Again, if you led of the Spirit you aren't doing the deeds of the flesh (Gal 5:19-21; ). So it's back to deeds.

Jas 2:20; But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?
Jas 2:17; Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.
Jas 2:24; You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.
Jas 2:26; For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

Again, if you led of the Spirit you aren't doing the deeds of the flesh (Gal 5:19-21; ). So it's back to deeds.
Hello B-A-C.

Struggling to understand the following.
Again, if you led of the Spirit you aren't doing the deeds of the flesh (Gal 5:19-21; ). So it's back to deeds.
I understand that being led by the Spirit implies that the flesh is silent.

But I do not understand why you said 'it's back to deeds'?

Do you see legal obedience as spiritual?

Do you see works as spiritual?

BAC, you answer the devide between us in your own use of scripture above: those who practice such things ......."practice such things" means you do it on purpose with no regard or repentance in your heart and proves you are not regenerated or saved in the first place!

And with a degree of determination/will to keep on doing it.

Again, if you led of the Spirit you aren't doing the deeds of the flesh (Gal 5:19-21; ). So it's back to deeds.

Jas 2:20; But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?

Maybe you could explain how we hope to have a righteousness that exceeds the Pharisees?
For a start let's lay down the options, we could:
a) try to be as righteous as we can be by our own efforts, and we may become more righteous than the average Pharisee.
b) consider ourselves to be righteous even though we are not.
c) believe that as time goes on we are progressively becoming more and more righteous via the power of the Spirit, and will eventually exceed the Pharisees
d) find someone who is more righteous than a Pharisee (Christ), and take their righteousness and apply it to ourselves
e) enter into an organic union with one who is more righteous than a Pharisee (Christ), and are seen as righteous on the basis of that union

James is talking about a professed faith. A real, genuine faith in God is going to result in action.
He (James) is not for a moment suggesting that we are Saved by works. He is simply saying; 'When you become Saved then you will have a huge desire to not walk as you did before Jesus Christ Saved you.'
For example; a Saved person will have a desire to read the Bible for the purpose of learning, the Saved person will be interested in hanging around other Christians, the Saved person will have a desire to pray to God in the name of Jesus Christ.
These are just a few examples.
Remember; our Spirit becomes perfect the moment we ask Jesus Christ to save us from hell Romans 8: 9-11. The flesh will follow what the Spirit desires, yet it may take some time.

So in other words, it goes back to works. "Practicing such things" determines on whether you are saved are not.
If you do bad works, you are not saved. I see.
You just don't get it or refuse to!
 • "Practicing such things" determines on whether you are saved are not. Well, it is not mine to judge but if you "Practice" any sin with out regard, remorse or repentance, you are probably not saved.
 • If you do bad works, you are not saved. (1) Again, you do any bad works and without regard for God's saving Grace, you are probably not saved. (2) Any sin, no matter how small or insignificant to you separates you from God if it were not for the acts of Jesus Christ. So, any sin...say doubt or negativity, can be regarded as "bad works". Being a true " Born Again" Christian, in no way means that you will hence forth be totally with out any sin. And, since you are human, the opposite is true, you will have some sin in your life but the difference is found in Romans 8:1
 • I see. No, unfortunately, I don't think you do!

So what do we focus on? Our works? Or our faith in the Spirit of Grace?

The flesh is scaring you saying "Don't do that!", "Don't do this!".

Just rest in the spirit, and Jesus will bear fruit in your life. I reject the notion that by doing certain things the Grace of God is somehow nullified.

When Jesus said "If you Love me, you will keep my commandments", he tests if you are really in the spirit or in the flesh. The Spiritual man says "Ahh, I will Love Jesus!", but the Fleshly man says "I must keep his commandments to show my Love!".

Actually I agree with this, but either way. In the end you better be living differently than before you were saved.
My apologies to anyone named Ben or Bob. The following is just an example.

Ben and Bob were best friends. They grew up together. They were pretty worldly.
They had both been involved with adultery, extra-marital affairs, pornography, stealing, lying, child-molesting, rape, and even experimented with Satan worship.
Both were heavy drinkers and even dabbled in drugs from time to time.
One day they both went to a church. Both went up for the altar call. Both believed they were sinners and that they needed Jesus to ave them.
A few months went by.
Ben quit seeing other women. He quit looking at pornography. He quit stealing. He quit drinking. He started reading the Bible and praying.
Bob went back to the old ways, he still cheated on his wife. He still drank. He quit going to church, and really never started a prayer routine.

Do you believe both men are equally saved?

As far as calling this salvation by works, I disagree. We can't do anything good enough to save us. We can't do enough good things to erase our sins.
Only Jesus can do that. Thus we are saved by grace alone. ( Eph 2:8-9; ) However once we are already saved, works start to count.

Matt 16:27; "For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS.

Luke 12:43; "Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes.
Luke 12:44; "Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
Luke 12:45; "But if that slave says in his heart, 'My master will be a long time in coming,' and begins to beat the slaves, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk;
Luke 12:46; the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
Luke 12:47; "And that slave who knew his master's will and did not get ready or act in accord with his will, will receive many lashes,
Luke 12:48; but the one who did not know it, and committed deeds worthy of a flogging, will receive but few. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.
Luke 12:49; "I have come to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled!

John 5:28; "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,
John 5:29; and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

Notice in both the passages above, it doesn't say they were judged fr what they believed, it says they were judged by their deeds (actions)

Rom 2:4; Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?
Rom 2:5; But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,
Rom 2:6; who WILL RENDER TO EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS:
Rom 2:7; to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life;
Rom 2:8; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation.
Rom 2:9; There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Gentile.

2 Cor 5:10; For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad

Tit 1:16; They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.

Rev 2:22; 'Behold, I will throw her on a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds.

In the parable of the talents.( Matt 25:14-30; ) Did the slave that did nothing get punished for what he believed, or for what he did or didn't do?

Rom 2:13; for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified.

Jas 1:21; Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.
Jas 1:22; But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

There is a movement is many churches today that says.. everyone is going to heaven whether they believe in Jesus or not.
Unitarian Universalists and most Mormons believe this. Even Joel Osteen the pastor of the largest church in the US says "Jesus may not be the only way to heaven".
Then there is another movement that says.. Just believe in Jesus, live however you want to, it doesn't matter.
Antimonianists believe this.. there are a couple of them here on TJ.
Then there is the Bible. It says how you live after you are saved determines many things. It isn't ONLY what you believe that saves you.

The people in Matt 7:21-23; believe in Jesus, they did miracles in His name and called him Lord. Why weren't they saved? ( see verses 25-27)

Gal 5:18; But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.

.... IF.... but if not...

Gal 5:19; Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality,
Gal 5:20; idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions,
Gal 5:21; envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Cor 6:9; Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,
1 Cor 6:10; nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

Matt 25:44; "Then they themselves also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?'
Matt 25:45; "Then He will answer them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.'
Matt 25:46; "These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

Matt 19:16; And someone came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?"
Matt 19:17; And He said to him, "Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into eternal life, keep the commandments."

 • No matter how hard you work to do good or perform good deeds , with out Jesus in you, it is as filthy rags to God. Isaiah 64:6
 • 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17
 • "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone. Luke 18:19

Amen! 1 John 1 says it well, too!

Every day I become more aware that my righteous acts are as filthy rags. It is only Jesus in me that makes me holy and righteous and set apart from the world. And He who began a good work in me will be faithful to complete it! He is faithful, even when we are not. We who have given our lives to Him will not be disappointed. He intercedes before the throne for us all at all times. Read John 17 and know that we who have believed are the object of God's love. We will be perfected only in His presence. Soon, I pray! Come Lord Jesus!

I reject the idea that all men are saved. The Bible clearly teaches otherwise.

But I also reject the idea that if one doesn't give up certain sins that means they need to be bombarded with passages to scare them. They need MORE Grace, they need to come to a place where they actually BELIEVE that sin is a PROBLEM and that JESUS is the ANSWER to it. When they understand the true Gospel, they will Love Jesus, and be led by the spirit to overcome sin and death. But overcoming sin is not the Gospel, Christ dieing for the forgiveness of sinners is.

Also, any man can go to church, read the Bible, and abstain from certain activities. But does that make them children of the Most High? No.

The Blood and Body of Christ is what makes us children of the Most High.

We shouldn't be like Abraham and sleep with Hagar in an attempt to bring about God's promises. God promised he would give us a new nature and that we would be given the Holy Spirit to lead us. God promised he would never forsake those who come to him. So let us not commit unfaithfulness by trying to bear fruit by ourselves. By being in the vine, we WILL bear fruit, because it is GOD working in us.

If we hunger and thirst after righteousness we are trying to make ourselves like Jesus. Though it is an unattainable goal, never-the-less, we can still reap many fruits...like...resurrection...everlasting life and all the promises made to us by Jesus. Reaching out for righteousness, then...as Jesus taught us, is the best place to start.

When we study to understand the NT, we should consider how the scripture related to three groups of believers.

(1) "Gentiles" without Christ that were baptized into Christ by being baptized with the Spirit of Christ (Romans 6:3), not by water baptism.
(2) "Israelites" born holy having the Spirit of Christ in them received from either parent (1 Corinthians 7:14) having the Holy Spirit of Christ in them as a descendant of Jacob (Israel).
(3) "Children born holy" by receiving the Spirit of Christ at conception (anointing, 1 John 2:20) from either parent having the Spirit of the Son of God (Christ) in them (1 Corinthians 7:14).

The following answer is formatted from the perspective of looking back in time (first century A.D.) at a "Gentile" (without Christ) being baptized into Christ Jesus with the Spirit of Christ.

….let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous (1 John 3:7).

And why/how is that?
If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him (1 John 2:29).

For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3).
“I” died?,……..when did/or how did “I” die?

Death comes before resurrection:
1 Corinthians 15:35- some will say, How are the dead raised up? (incorruptible-have Eternal Life-1 John 5:11)

Foolish one, what you sow is not made alive unless it dies (1 Corinthians 15:36).

It is appointed unto man to die once, but Christ died in our behalf and was raised from the dead, so that by being baptized into Christ with the Spirit of Christ (not water), we are effectually joined together with the Spirit of Christ into His death and raised up together.
And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, (Hebrews 9:27).

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone (Hebrews 2:9).

The last Adam (Jesus Christ) became a life-giving spirit (1 Corinthians 15:45b).

For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—………
—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13a,c).

Therefore:
……as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death (Romans 6:3).

For he who has died has been justified from sin (Romans 6:7).

Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism (Spirit baptism-not water baptism) into (his) death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

For if we have been united together (with the Spirit of Christ) in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be of His resurrection, (Romans 6:4-5).

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; (Galatians 2:20).

….let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous (1 John 3:7).
If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him (1 John 2:29).

May God bless

This song has really been blessing me the last week or so....

"My Hope is Built on Nothing Less"
by Edward Mote, 1797-1874

1. My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

2. When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

3. His oath, His covenant, and blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When every earthly prop gives way,
He then is all my Hope and Stay.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

4. When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found,
Clothed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne!

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

But yes!, it is attainable. We are born of the Spirit (raised incorruptible) and then grow in grace and wisdom as we are purified of sin and conformed to the likeness of Christ to be "changed" when sanctified wholly by being anointed with the Holy Spirit of God to put on immortality.

For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
(Romans 8:29)

My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you, (Galatians 4:19)

Believers that were not born in Christ ("Gentiles") died to sin as they were spiritually crucified with Christ in order to be baptized with the Spirit of Christ into His death and raised incorruptible, born of the Spirit and justified righteous as a child of God. They went on to be grafted into Israel when they were sanctified completely by being anointed with the Holy Spirit of God to be an heir and son of God.

When we are born of God, we are righteous just as Christ is righteous by the Spirit of Christ being the life within us, and practice righteous by walking with the Spirit as Christ lives in and through us.

Exactly, and His righteousness is not independent of His person. The implication of Christ not only dwelling but being formed in us (Galatians 4:19) is that everything He is, everything He has done, is now ours as well via the organic union, or the "grafted life" of our humanity with Christ's divinity and humanity.
