What is the Gospel?

With all due respect... Peter did not lead the church...He was an evangelist as were the others. No more. He had trouble with favoritism and fear of man..etc but he was not leading the church. The Holy Spirit was doing that.

The verse was not about Peter at all. Well no more than anyone else.

In fact RJ Matt 18 says nothing at all about Peter.
Matthew 18

1At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
2And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
3And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
6But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
7Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
8Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
9And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.
10Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
11For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.
12How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?
13And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.
14Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.
15Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
16But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
17And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.
18Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
19Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
20For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
21Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
22Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
23Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.
24And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.
25But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
26The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
27Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.
28But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.
29And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
30And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.
31So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.
32Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:
33Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?
34And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.
35So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Please Brother look back at my post, I said nothing about this verse being about Peter, I said deals with Peter. Peter had interaction with Jesus throughout this section of the Bible like Chapters 16, 17 and 18 as well as the other disciples. Again as far as Peter, being the rock that Jesus builds his church on, where did I say that Peter lead the Church in my post!?!?..come on, why put words in my mouth?!?!

You still avoid the issue... loose...unloose...keys has nothing to do with the power of the individual but in accordance with the teachings of Jesus and for the disciples and then the church and if done within these teachings, God would approve their actions!!! Good Grief!!!

Oh Boy! Did I ever misunderstand!! I'm sorry RJ. :embarasse

Who did Jesus give the keys to? Who did Jesus put in charge?

Matthew 16:19 (Amplified Bible)

19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind (declare to be improper and unlawful) on earth [a]must be what is already bound in heaven; and whatever you loose (declare lawful) on earth [b]must be what is already loosed in heaven.(A)

Matthew 18:18 (Amplified Bible)

When you got the keys you call the shots. Keys indicate reign.
So if you want to pass the keys to Satan, you go ahead. I won't!

well.good stuff.

Brother it took me so many years to see the revelation in those scriptures and when I did it changed my life forever. I agree. The power to change circumstances for the better and for the worse are right in our mouth. You're right we do reign on earth and so many Christians act like we are powerless and have to be doormats. Man everything God tells us to do in the Bible works when you see the revelation and faith grows. Whether its speaking to your problem, whether its tithing, whether its Communion, whether its using anointng oil, etc. Our words are powerful and many of us don't realize that. The things of God are just incredibly powerful when you put faith behind them. But too many are just so impatient and give up on God's Word way too easily and just talk about how things are going to be in the afterlife. Not me. I'm all about showing people how powerful the Lord's Word is to overcome everything in this life! But hey faith is what seperates the men from the boys. Some believers want to be drinking milk from a bottle their whole lives. Not me. Bring me the hard food Lord, I'm not into wearing diapers anymore. Praise the name of Jesus!
by faith! bro! Praise the name of Jesus!

So if you want to pass the keys to Satan, you go ahead. I won't!

So then what exactly are the keys to the kingdom of heaven?

I understand where you are coming from Jigger but its just that belief that makes Christians sit on their hands while Satan and the world grind them to pudding. That is not being a 'warrior' a 'soldier' Its being cannon fodder. We are to Be soldiers. We are to be kicking devil butt. Not getting killed in lack of action by sickness, poverty, and every other thing Satan chooses to throw at us.

Well, I'll keep kicking butt and let the pacifist Christians try to reason things away. I'll swing the Word at every situation that does not line up with Gods Word.

Christianity is not a theoretical thing. Its all action.

I don't see it that way at all, satan nor the world are grinding me into pudding, I have learned all long time ago that satan has no power over me. My biggest enemy is self and I believe this is why Jesus said I must deny self daily and take up my cross, which is why I dislike the self help, self wealth and name it claim it deception. We simply disagree on many many things and even the principle and fundamental things of the gospel. You seem to think the object is things concerning the flesh like money, health, the struggles of carnal life indicated by your constant reference to them. I say it has to do with spiritual things and that my flesh must be humbled and fettered in order to mature spiritually. You seem to think Jesus died on the cross so your flesh could be pampered but I say Jesus died on that cross to give me spiritual life and join me with Father. We disagree on about everything and I see no point in continuing to argue. The proof is in the posts already for everyone to read. You go on and teach some how to pamper their flesh under the guise that it is what God wants and I will go on and teach others the need for crucifying self and denying the flesh so that they may grow spiritually. I agree is it is a thing of action but I strongly disagree about the action you say is to be taken.

Think of it this way. If a father dies and leaves great wealth for his young children, those children are not much better off than slaves until they grow up, even though they actually own everything their father had. Gal.4:1

Jigger NOBODY said God prospers us so we can indulge ourselves. As I've said in other posts.. We are blessed so we can bless others. How can we care for the poor if we are poor ourselves? How can we minister healing if we are in a wheelchair? How can we minister peace of our spirit is in a constant state of flux? It has been said that an army marches on its stomach. Well..? We are an army. We cannot minister anything or really win any battle without supply.

Its true. Nobody listens to a poor man. Don’t argue with that one Jigger. I've seen it waaay too often. The poor people in countless churches are treated as untouchables. They are not allowed to teach or minister in any way. They are not invited anywhere. Nobody visits them. With the rare exception they are pariah.

The sick are generally in the same boat. I'm not talking about the guy with the flu. I'm talking about the guy who is permanently down. The guy with a bad thyroid and emphysema. I'm taking about the guy who had a tree fall on him and is now a quadriplegic. Who looks out for them, imprisoned in their own failed bodies? A sick person cannot believe for healing for them and not for himself. Can he?
So what do we do? We share our blessings. Give to the poor. Then teach him how to live in prosperity so he can reach out to help others. Feed his family, pay a mortgage payment or two, lift some of the pressure off of him. Put some gas in his car so he can go to church or whatever. And believe me..he won't mind a bit listening to the Word while you're doing it.

So what's happening while you're reaching out with a bit of action? You're putting some visual with your audio. You're showing the power of the Word. But you do as you see fit. Believe only what you are comfortable with. And I won't push you to grow at all. Remember though that Love, Believe, Faith, Conviction well...everything about Jesus and Christianity are all action words.

They all require that one steps out!

But as I've said before
A man has to do what he decides is best

I think Jiggyfly thinks that you can pay the electric bill with love or a note saying "God told me to tell you to pay my bill this month. I prayed about it and He said you have to do it." Try filling up your gas tank on love. God spoke a great deal about money in the Bible and I believe its even given a greater importance than love based on what the Word says. Its just ignorant for Christians to run from prosperity or demonize it when we get so much done for the Church with it. If money has you, that's a whole other story but we know fully well the Word teaches us that money is not your God. Fundamentally though, these just become reasons not to honor God with your posessions and to justfiy robbing from Him. Many Christians continue to turn the focus away from this theft and disrespect of the Lord by trying to present poverty or a lack of prosperity as being a sign of holiness and humility. And brother you and I both know that many poor people, make money their god and all they have on their mind is money, money, money. It just makes me laugh a little at how some Christians speak as if every Christian that is prosperous, just has money on their mind and worships money. When the truth is that prosperity serves as testimony of how good God is and how He wants you to have His best. I mean our Abba created diamonds, rubies, silver and gold. The streets of Heaven are made of gold. Who are Christians kidding that God doesn't want us to be prosperous.

And likewise I am disgusted with those who think that material wealth is a sign of God's blessing. No doubt if you have taken up your cross it's 14 carat gold and embellished with rubies and diamonds. I find your posts quite revealing.

Like I said earlier, "Think of it this way. If a father dies and leaves great wealth for his young children, those children are not much better off than slaves until they grow up, even though they actually own everything their father had."

Well I'm really sorry that Jigger misunderstood the drift of what we're saying here. Like Paul I know what its like to be poor. Been there done that, Like being on the street with a wife and four children. That was hell. And guess what? Nobody wanted what I had. The sentiment was "If that's how Jesus saves... Who wants that?" Then even the Christians chased us away. And we were Christians at the time. I was such a new Christian...I almost turned back to the world where I made lots of money. I'm proud of my Jesus who took us through it and prospered us, and grateful to Him too.
No lie! A wife and four kids, a busted car and nowhere to sleep. We asked Christian churches for a bit of assistance and were told to go away. Thats why the religious view of prosperity makes me want to puke.

I guess you must also be disgusted with Abraham then, given his incredible wealth from the Lord was so great that all around him were incredibly jealous. And guess what, it bears repeating, we are the seed of Abraham. And Abraham had a grace covenant with God as we do. I embrace the Abrahamic blessings and what Jesus purchased for me at the Cross. I don't tell Him I'm too good for it. Abba please give me Jiggyfly's wealth and prosperity purchased by Jesus at the Cross, if he doesn't claim it in 48hrs, in Jesus name I pray. Amen. I have no problem taking your share brother.

That's an amazing testimony brother and that's the kind of testimony that will help people see that Jesus will do something for you now. The gospel of Jesus Christ produces health and wealth. Its undeniable. Scripture says so. We'd have more people coming to know the Lord if we had less Christians and churches telling people its a sign of humility and holiness to be poor and destitute. And when you come down with sickness its God's love token from Heaven. Yes folks these are the kind of things being said today, not in the exact language, but being said nonetheless about our Lord. Who would want to serve a Lord that produces this in our lives? Its just downright embarassing that we have Christians trying to make people believe that this is what "suffering for Jesus" is all about. Thank you Lord for your bullet proof financial system that will get anypne through a recession or depression. Thank you for reserving your best for those who are humble and give you your first fruits and offerings.

So there's the missionary...He spends sooo much of his time begging for support. Instead of allowing God to supply it.

You mentioned Solomon as being astronomically rich. Job was very rich. Isaac was very rich. Well Many of Gods people were wealthy in the extreme. If God liked to bless them that way so they could do, why should it be sin now? Why shouldn't that missionary have the funds he needs without begging?
Makes no sense at all!!

I wonder if anyone has considered the why of James talking to the rich people in this church? This piece of scripture means a lot to me because I've seen so much discrimination against the poor in Christian churches.

James 2

1My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
<sup class="versenum" id="en-KJV-30296">2</sup>For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
3And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:

So there's the missionary...He spends sooo much of his time begging for support. Instead of allowing God to supply it.

You mentioned Solomon as being astronomically rich. Job was very rich. Isaac was very rich. Well Many of Gods people were wealthy in the extreme. If God liked to bless them that way so they could do, why should it be sin now? Why shouldn't that missionary have the funds he needs without begging?
Makes no sense at all!!

You're right with the long list of incredibly prosperous men of God. Seems a lot of our brothers and sisters in the faith think that God is a counterfeiter and is going to drop money bags from Heaven to pay the bills. Never once do we have any recorded instance in the NT where Jesus and His disciples went around begging for anythinjg. Yet we are to believe that under the new and better covenant, God expects us to live like that? Its like you said, it makes no sense at all. Some people need to quit praying and need to start stepping out in faith and doing the things God tells us to do in the Bible that work!

lol. Iceman had a good answer but it seems that not much is truly understood.

The Gospel as Iceman said is the first 4 books of the New Testament. If people looked at them more intently they would discover that it is a lifestyle, the guidelines, the rules, the basic way of life of Jesus as he taught his followers. With a reasonably prepared bible more than 2/3 of the Gospel is in red letter, the words spoken by Jesus as he spoke to his followers. The same lifestyle we have to live today as a Christian. It is that fundamentally written.

Most people like quoting from the letters of the Apostles, after Jesus ascended to heaven the Apostles were commanded to teach others as Jesus taught them. That Great Commission, today falls to us. How? Just look at John 15:10, If you keep my commandments, you shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandment, and abide in his love. Matthew 28:19-20, Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world. Amen. These are just a couple examples of many in the Gospel. So repeating the Apostles is good but they are simply teaching other cultures, about what it meant to have Jesus in their lives. Just as we must do, in reflection of our life, thereby making us disciples or students of our Lord and Saviour

As we live in New Covenant Gospel, the only Gospel is what God commissioned Paul to teach:

Paul begins his letter to the Romans by saying that he was commissioned to preach the gospel (Rom. 1:1).

“I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.” (Galatians 1:11-12)

“For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16)

1 Corinthians 15:
1Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Thanks for confirming my point. As long as you are of the Spirit you of the Lord ... therefore a disciple of Jesus
