I'm reading the book of John and I stand here puzzled because the verses are contradicting eachother. Trying to figure this out. Somebody please correct me if I'm interpreting this wrong.
Read . John 1:29-30...
John (the baptist) recognizes Jesus walking towards him and brings attention to him "Look, the Lamb of God".
Then read John 1:31 ..
Says that John (the baptist) didn't know him and the reason he came baptizing with water was to reveal him to Isreal.
Now this is where I stand confused..
Read John 1:32-33
John (the baptist) pretty much says that he would not have known him (jesus the lamb of god), if it wasn't for the spirit of god descending on him like a dove.
Question: So how then how did he spot Jesus walking toward him?? (John1:29) if the spirit hadn't decended on him yet? Because St. Mathew states AT THAT MOMENT heaven opened and the spirit descended on him like a dove. (Mathew 3:16-17) And also in Mathew John the Baptist states that he needs to be baptized by jesus (John 3:14) so he obviously knew who he was without the spirit of god descending on him like a dove.
Somebody help.
