Some verses on Prophecy
There is no doubt that the Corinthian church was badly behaved and generally immature, and yet Paul never tells them to stop using their spiritual gifts:
1 Corinthians 14:39
Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
1 Corinthians 14:1
Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
Here's a command from Paul to the Thessalonian Church:
1 Thessalonians 5:19-20
Do not put out the Spirit's fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt.
Not all prophecy in the New Testament was of a doctrinal nature:
Acts 11:27-28
During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.)
1 Timothy 4:14
Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
I, among many contemporary Christians, speak in tongues. As have countless others throughout church history.
