Psalm 119
1Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the Word of the LORD.
2Blessed are they that keep his Word, and that seek him with the whole heart.
3They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.
4You have commanded us to keep your Word diligently.
5O that my ways were prepared to keep your Word!
6Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all your Word.
7I will praise you with uprightness of heart, when I have learned your righteous Word.
8I will keep your Word: O you never forsake me utterly.
9How shall a young man (an old man too) cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to your Word.
10With my whole heart I have sought you: O let me not wander from your Word.
11Your Word I have hidden in my heart, so that I might not sin against you.
12Blessed are you, O LORD: teach me your Word.
13With my lips have I declared all the Word of your mouth.
14I have rejoiced in the way of your Word, as much as in all riches.
15I will meditate in your Word, and have respect unto your ways.
16I will delight myself in your Word: I will not forget your Word.
17Deal bountifully with your servant, that I may live, and keep your Word.
18Open you mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your Word.
19I am a stranger in the earth: hide not your Word from me.
20My soul breaks for the longing that it has unto your Word at all times.
21You have rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from your Word.
22Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept your Word.
23Princes also did sit and speak against me: but your servant did meditate in your Word.
24Your Word also is my delight and my counselor.

I think everyone is missing the entire point. I would have to go study it a bit myself but :

When Jesus told his followers that you will always have among you the poor, it goes further. This is the danger of taking on verse or a part of it out of context.

Jesus and his followers were somewhere and a woman poured an expensive oil on his head and or washed his feet with it. His followers thought this was awful as it could have been sold for much money to help the poor.

Jesus told them to leave her alone and that you will always have the poor among you but you will not always have me.

Contrary to what has been said about this and debated, it is very simple.

God will and loves to reward those who do show him love, faith and devotion. It is his right.

He was not saying not to help the poor, this was not about that at all, it has a much deeper meaning .

Now away from that, some are very poor and we should help them, but this does not always mean giving money to some church to waste, it is much better to help them if you can yourself. The modern church and pastors are so money hungry their main intent is to make you feel bad and get your money, and then go waste it.

I would like a new silk suit, and a gold ring on each finger and a new car each year..............NOT, it means nothing to me. I cannot eat a new car and it just brings me under the law of more taxes and payments, If someone seen me in a suit they would faint. I would much rather drive my old one and maybe in my travels just do something nice for someone or buy them food, or clothing or whatever if the occasion does arise. Sometimes I go look for one.

Imposters and con men need not apply, I am pretty sharp at knowing that game.

No not saying never give to a church, just be very wise. Test it all. and ask if need be what are you up too. Look around, do you see good being done?? Or does the money just seem to vanish, and never see any results? Are they helping people or just wasting it and creating a burden of red tape and distribution costs. Much to look at.

Kit

Yes Kit, I agree with that wholeheartedly.

Jesus' compassion for the poor shines out of all of the gospel stories. An account of Jesus life and ministry that does take his teaching on riches and poverty into account is inadequate.

Yet this little scene reminds us of something that is still more important than helping the poor - our devotion to Jesus himself.

Why do you thank me for the scriptures when you have ignored every single one of them in your response?

Yet none of the scriptures that you posted negated the biblical fact that poverty is a Curse of the Law. None of them negate that Jesus took your poverty at the Cross so you could be rich. None of those scriptures negate that you are Abraham's seed and an heir according to the promise that God gave Abraham and have a legal right to all the blessings of Abraham. None of those scriptures negate the blessing that comes from tithing nor do they negate the "sowing and reaping" promise that's stated in Genesis. Brother you could pull out every scripture where Jesus makes illustrations about there always being poor people and people not being money hungry. But you will never be able to produce even ONE scripture where God states that the blessing for tithing is gone nor the reaping of what you sow has ended nor where the blesings given to Abraham's seed were done away with. Seems to me that you're too fixated on the words rich and poor and are not looking at the context that Jesus discussed them and you're not fixated on the PROMISES that God has given you. We are certainly are going to have poor people always. How many millions of people on this planet are still living under the Curse of the Law? How many millions have not reversed the curse on their money? Giving God the first fruits of your increase is absolutely critical to redeeming your money from the curse. You were redeemed from the curse, but not your money. God doesn't call it "unrighteous mammon" for nothing! Give Him your tenth so your 80% becomes holy. Because what is holy the devil can not touch! Jesus multiplies anything you put in His hands. Math isn't my strongest area but what is 0x0 =? God is not a counterfeiter and He is not going to drop bags of money from the sky. You need to bring Him something to multiply. Tithing is not just bringing money to Hod. Its sowing in the Word. You need to change your mindset and quit clinging to your money like that return will never come. You don't go for wealth and you don't go for health, you go for Jesus. But wealth and health just happens to be what Jesus will mosy definitely bless you with. Not sure why so many Christians continue to resist the Lord's goodness.

Hey Robster, can you post some scripture to support your position that poverty is a curse of the law and that Jesus died on the cross so we could be rich, that the tithe was intended for anyone other than Israel.

BTW 80% + 10% = 90%

15But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
16Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field.
17Cursed shall be thy basket and thy store.
18Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.

Now thats the curse of sin in action. Poverty!!

"Jesus died on the cross to make us rich"

Have you never questioned why - in the course of his earthly ministry - Jesus issued a series of warnings to the rich, consistently upheld the cause of the poor, and never promised anyone material wealth if the purpose of his death was to make us rich?

As for the Abrahamic blessing, note the words that Jesus puts into Abraham's mouth in Luke 16: 19-31...

“There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores.

The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side.

The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side.

And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’

But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’

And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house — for I have five brothers — so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’

And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’

He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

Thankful for scriptures

Ummm.... I just ignore the poverty parts...... God did not design his Children to be poor..............

And any scripture is of great benefit... You just got your doctrine in the way and missed the multiply your seed sown scriptures.... So, thought you might need help there.......

Nice post and good point Hekuran.

Hey Robster, can you post some scripture to support your position that poverty is a curse of the law and that Jesus died on the cross so we could be rich, that the tithe was intended for anyone other than Israel.

BTW 80% + 10% = 90%

2 Corinthians 8:9 (Amplified Bible)

9For you are becoming progressively acquainted with and recognizing more strongly and clearly the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ (His kindness, His gracious generosity, His undeserved favor and spiritual blessing), [in] that though He was [so very] rich, yet for your sakes He became [so very] poor, in order that by His poverty you might become enriched (abundantly supplied).

Deuteronomy 28:15-17 (Amplified Bible)

15But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord your God, being watchful to do all His commandments and His statutes which I command you this day, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you:
16Cursed shall you be in the city and cursed shall you be in the field. 17Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading trough.

Deuteronomy 28:38-40 (Amplified Bible)

38You shall carry much seed out into the field and shall gather little in, for the locust shall consume it. [Fulfilled in Hag. 1:6.]
39You shall plant vineyards and dress them but shall neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes, for the worm shall eat them. 40You shall have olive trees throughout all your territory but you shall not anoint yourselves with the oil, for your olive trees shall drop their fruit.

And by all means let anyone try and argue that these verses do not illustrate perfect examples of poverty. Just take off your 21st century lenses and capture the language of the day.

Abraham, Isaac and Jacob brought their tithe to the Lord before it was ever put into the law. And notice that when tithing was put under law, there was blessing for it. Abraham, Isaac and jacob all tithed under grace. There was never any law to make Abraham tithe. Where did Abraham learn to tithe? It was a well known principle in Abraham's day that wehn you gave someone a tenth of all your increase, you were recognizing that he was great! I mean look at what Abraham did when he returned from battle and recognized that God gave Him the victory. Melchizedek, the High Priest of his day comes with bread and wine and the first thing he does is bless Abraham. What a picture of Jesus right there with the bread and wine. And all Abraham does is bring him a tithe. That was the secret to his great prosperity. We're under grace again and Jesus recives the tithe today right through the church. And Jesus becomes your Shield and Exceedingly Great Reward, among other things, when you bring Him the tithe. Through Holy Communion we recognize and proclaim that the Lord's death was a fact. Its the only way Jesus commanded us to remember Him. When you bring your tithe to Jesus under grace, you recognize He lives, that He is resurrected and you honor Him. Just like Abraham did Melchizedek. We need to have that same spirit of grace that Abraham had though when we tithe. The first fruits have always belonged to the Lord. There are many examples of the tithe throughout the Bible. Jesus Himself is an example of the tithe being the first fruits of humanity Himself. And when the people lifted up Jesus to the Lord, they unkowingly gave God the tithe and we are all guaranteed to rise up out of our graves.

But I am having some difficulty seeing support of your earlier statements. I see no mention of the tithe and no mention of Jesus dying on the cross so we could be rich in worldly materials.

Now,as far as poverty being a curse of the law, do you suppose there was poverty before the law?

I know a rich man. Very rich and has want for nothing. But he is not happy and is in conflict with his family at all times. He married a poor girl and his family of legal beagles still resent that.

He uses people, he uses money to make money and does mean things to all around him. He goes to Church to further his business contacts and passes out business cards all the time. He gives some money to the church but always wants some kind of recognition for it.

Sound familiar???

All that high pressure preaching as soon as you enter the door of a church and that parting shot as you leave for more money ,get so very old. The Church as gotten just like our government and people realize it is not a good thing. Across the nation many are leaving the churches and conducting small in home meetings to worship and learn about God. This is now quite common. They may or may not use the money they give to a pastor but they do take 50 percent of it and go help someone. They have grown weary of the con game.

Although the old law is not gone, many things did change, and the New Testament makes no requirements as the old law did for money. The money thing is a carry over from the old, used by many to fleece the sheep. Oh how long is your wool my sheep, may I have some. Giggle!!

Jesus did not put any requirements on how much you give, all he wants is if you do give and find it in your heart to give that you do so cheerfully and willingly. He would also tell you to be very wise in your giving and to make sure it does count for something . He says give to God what you can, willingly, give to the government what you have to and if the government has taxed you to the point you have little, give what you can, as it is from your heart.

So some rich men do all the right things to impress society and those around them but do not know God.

The poor who have little when they give they do so out of love and kindness. That is what Jesus finds important. The condition of your heart and your feelings and reasons.

Ya all can fuss about it all day, it will not change that simple truth, give if you can, do so willingly and with compassion and for the right reasons.

Very simple really, till you step into the circle of modern religion, when you do that, you best be talking to God the whole time. Modern religion is a business, and not of God, the machine has to survive so says the board of directors.

You know many in the time of Jesus just met beside a creek, or in a field or somewhere, Jesus does not need a money robbing temple, he is just a simple man, one of truth and compassion, he needs no money at all, but would like us to help those less fortunate, but he simply says do it from the heart, as you can.

Do we have to go through this again??

lets go through this step by step... seems to be have forgotten from the few years of tithing threads Jiggyfly and I have done....

1) God never changes........ NEVER

Mal 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

2) All scripture..... ALL is for doctrine and reproof... EVERYONE!!! not just the ones that won't cost you money....... How convenient folks....

Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Ti 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

3) Jesus said the pharisee's ought to Have judgment, Mercy and Faith... Something we ought to have.... He also said Tithe........
Now you can just say that was then, or that was a tribute coin, or You have no spice to give.. Whatever excuse you want, but a tithe is 10% of what first comes in.......

So, if faith, judgment and Mercy have passed away. So did the tithe...

If your pharisee minded... then keep your money!!!

Mat 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
I think I'll just obey the Words of the one I made Lord.....

4) Just to remind you in case you have forgotten... God said !!!!!!!

Mal 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not;

Shortly after that God said.................

Mal 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

Now if blessings where you don't have room enough to receive does not interest you,and God somehow changed to where the Word, and gospel are not to get first place, then don't worry about it..... just keep on getting by, you and your family and forget the rest of the World...... As for me!!!! I will stay blessed, and have more than enough to bless others.

Oh, God was talking to the priest??? I see... more excuse.....sigh.....

Mal 3:9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

The whole nation folks........... but not our nation... I see..... Like I said, keep your money.......

Jesus said seek the Kingdom of God first... God and his things first, then your needs last. All the rest will be added to you... Job promotions, business opportunities, a way out!!! The tithe is the Increase of all God has done for you, it's only 10% and setting that aside first for the Kingdom... seeking the kingdom will ensure that all the rest will be added and you will be blessed..... If God changed, if Jesus Changed, then I sure missed it somewhere...

Now,as far as poverty being a curse of the law, do you suppose there was poverty before the law?

2 Corinthians 8:9 speaks for itself. Were the blessings given to Abraham just promised to any ole people? Or were they promised to the seed of Abraham? I'm sure you're aware that countless millions are not the seed of Abraham, so why should we at all be surprised about their being poverty on this planet? BUT when we have Christians who are not seeing biblical prosperity, we need to examine theat more closely. I mean how many Christians even believe they are the seed of Abraham? How many even walk in that understanding. I remind myself of that everyday and I walk with that belief myself. You seem to be focused on material waelth, well are you going to argue that Jesus became spiritually poor on the Cross? The gospel of Jesus Christ is the gospel of grace. Grace produces health and wealth. Why is being prosperous so hard to believe for some Christians? God made bold promises to Abraham and we have that blessing. But what is the one peculiar thing that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob did as a matter of practice when they receioved an increase? they brought a tithe to the Lord. And it is rather peculiar because when Abraham first did it, there was no law commanding him to tithe. But that's how he responded to honor God witht he victory that he knew that God gave him. It is absolutely incredible to note that the Hebrew word for tithe is MASAR. And the Hebrew word for rich is ASAR. This is not any kind of coincidence. God hides the rich in the tithe.

Great post Brother Mike! You know its amazing how all throughout the Bible the Lord tells us not to test Him, with the one exception being in Mal. 3:10. I mean the Lord practically double dog dares you to see what He does with the tithe that you bring. It baffles me how so many Christians say they trust the Lord yet hold onto their money with a white knuckle grip.

Yet this little scene reminds us of something that is still more important than helping the poor - our devotion to Jesus himself.

Why does devotion to Jesus come ahead of helping those in need? It is because it is through the lordship of Jesus in our lives - being true disciples of His - that we grow spiritually and become Kingdom people, people who do His will out of the flow of His love and His mercy to us and through us. And we do it enthusiastically.

Jesus said... the one you visited........the one you gave to... You really have done it to me.........

Kingdom People put God first, and that means the gospel first.... Money is a good indication where you stand. God's system is give and it shall be given. This enables us to be a greater and greater blessing.

If you seriously do not believe in tithing.... It better not be because of the money......... but what you really think you see in the word.

It iscultural produce. bullet proof...... Tithe.......... Putting God first, and being faithful with what you do have, sets you up for increase.....

Where does the Bible speak of tithing money? The only tithing I know of in Scripture is the Old Testament practice of tithing agricultural produce.

Tithing

My post is above ED... Jesus said not to leave tithing undone and God said it, and even said he changed not.......

Every scripture... ED is for reproof and DOCTRINE!!! I don't look for ways to cheat the Kingdom.....
