You don't have the Holy Spirit

I have returned to our Lord from a two year break. This was in part caused by a minister from an evangelical church telling me that I didn't have the Holy Spirit, because I didn't speak in tongues. I told him I would rather have the gift of love. I was going through a difficult time in my life and these words were not helpful. Was he right?

Look up to Jesus

Dear Johnpaul ,

Don't you worry about what people say or do . What matters now is that you are here for the LORD !

Do not look back . Look forward and trust the Lord . His Spirit will empower you when you surrender to HIM .

Look up to Jesus .
Let us be Christ-centred
GBU always

you're right I now listen to the Lord. But I would like to go to a church that puts Him first, and not their ego's.

God most definitely can give a person the gift of speaking in tongues. The Holy Spirit is sovereign in the dispersion of the spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:11). Though (1 Corinthians 13:8) mentions the gift of tongues ceasing. I find it hard to believe that someone today has the gift of tongues, it was something of the past that God doesn't use or use as much as it once was. Even if it were used today, (1 Corinthians 12:29-30) clearly indicates that not every follower of God has the gift of speaking in tongues.

That misister was really wrong on saying that to you. We receive the Holy Spirit by simpy believing in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior (John 3:5-16).

Sorry to hear that you were stumbled in your walk with the LOrd. However, now you are back, and that is just wonderful. You need a good church, with a caring ministry.

I pray that God will meet you in this regard.

Amen

Let's read 1 Corinthians 12 starting at verse 4:

There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

There are differences of ministries but the same Lord.

And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,

to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the same Spirit,

to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

Where does it say in this passage, or for that matter any passage, that "you don't have the Holy Spirit because you don't speak in tongues"?

Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-31; then read 1 Corinthians 13 where Paul speaks about The Greatest Gift. Then for a rounded education, I would finish reading the Book of 1 Corinthians.

Anyone who claims that someone does not have the Holy Spirit because that someone does not speak in tongues is acting in place of God; and no one can do that.

God Bless

It sounds like this person has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit confused with the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
JohnPaul please don't let someone's ignorance keep you or hold you back from recieving all that God has, and the baptism in the Holy Spirit is a gift to everyone who is born- again and made Jesus their Lord, which includes speaking in new tongues( not to be confused with the vocal inspired gift of the"speaking in toungues". So to quote brother Paul
"seek the gifts".

Yes, jiggyfly, excellent point. I agree. In 1 Corinthians 12:31, Paul says, "earnestly desire the best gifts."

The clearest explanation of the baptism appears in I Corinthians 12:13. Paul is dealing with a situation where the Corinthian church was splitting into factions over the issue of spiritual gifts. Overemphasis on certain spectacular gifts had led to the attitude that some people had the most desirable gifts, while others were deficient.

In response, Paul exclaims, "We're all one! Don't divide up into cliques!" (paraphrasing) And to prove his point, he explains, "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit" (I Corinthians 12:13).

Dear johnpaul,

It really saddens me when people stumble in their walk of faith because of the actions of others! I have to say that the only way to guard against something like this ever happening to you again is to understand that there should be nothing (and no-one) between you and Jesus.

Your relationship with Him should not be hindered by the actions of others, we cannot rely on other people to tell us the truth or we would be forever in darkness! Sadly I have seen this happen, time and time again. People who have left the church because of an ill word, a disagreement, or the teaching of false doctrine. There are many churches, but only one God. If you are walking with Him, He will lead and direct you. He can give you the ability to discern the truth from the lies.

So the next time that someone tries to tell you something (and this may happen again because if the devil knows it worked on you once, He would be happy to try it again!) you need to take it to the Lord in prayer. Ask Jesus for yourself if what they're saying is true and the Holy Spirit will lead you to the answer... Please do not let the enemy steal time from you, it is precious! God would have led you to that exact verse in Corinthians, I am certain, had you only asked Him.

Love in Christ....

Great scripture DanV, but this is addressing the baptism into Christ by the Holy Spirit (becoming born-again) which is a seperate experience and reality from the baptism into the Holy Spirit by Christ.

Acts 8:12-25
12But now the people believed Philip’s message of Good News concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women were baptized. 13*Then Simon himself believed and was baptized. He began following Philip wherever he went, and he was amazed by the great miracles and signs Philip performed.
14*When the apostles back in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God’s message, they sent Peter and John there. 15 As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new Christians to receive the Holy Spirit. 16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.18*When Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given when the apostles placed their hands upon people’s heads, he offered money to buy this power. 19*“Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!”
20*But Peter replied, “May your money perish with you for thinking God’s gift can be bought! 21*You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right before God. 22*Turn from your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive your evil thoughts, 23*for I can see that you are full of bitterness and held captive by sin.”
24*“Pray to the Lord for me,” Simon exclaimed, “that these terrible things won’t happen to me!”
25*After testifying and preaching the word of the Lord in Samaria, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem. And they stopped in many Samaritan villages along the way to preach the Good News to them, too.

I believe 1 Corinthians 12 speaks of "Spiritual Gifts: Unity in Diversity" and 1 Corinthians 12:13, in particular, refers to "Unity and Diversity in One Body." In other words, don't divide the body by claiming that one has a better gift then the other.

In 1 Cornthians 12:28-30, Paul summarized this excellent writing with:

"And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teaches, after that miracles, the gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues."

"Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miraches?"

"Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?"

"But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way."

Then Paul talks about The Greatest Gift in 1 Corinthians 13.

It saddens me that some pentecostal preachers still hold to the teaching that being baptized in the Holy Spirit always includes speaking in tongues. I have a very spirit-filled close friend whom I have known for nearly twenty years who has never spoken in tongues.
The Apostle Paul downplays the importance of tongues in church settings: "I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue." (1 Cor 14:18-19)

Repentance,
1 Cor 13:8 says that tongues WILL case, not that tongues has ceased. All the gifts will cease on the day of the Lord's return. They will no longer be needed. But until then, The Holy Spirit is still distributing the gift of tongues as he wills and it still has a powerful function.

Oh okay, thanks for clearing that up. I'm sure the Holy Spirit can do things like that, I've just never personally heard of someone speaking in tongues now days.

1 Corinthians 14:6-17 tells me;

There are so many different religions today that believe in The Almighty God & Jesus Christ, but tell about them in different ways. It's like we're all so close but yet so far away! Some times the best thing we all can do is just focus on the things that Jesus taught us to do. Here's what Cor.14:6-17(18-25) tells me;
1 Corinthians 14:6-17
6 Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?
7 Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes?
8 Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?
9 So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air.
10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning.
11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me.
12 So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.
13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.
16 If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?
17 You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.

So, speaking in tongues is just another word for speaking in a different language, right? And that is why when we speak in a different tongue we need to make sure that we interpret (explain) what we said to those who do not speak of that tongue. 1 Corinthians 14:39 Says;
* 1 Corinthians 14:39
Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
* Meaning, do not forbid in speaking in tongues, that is - in other languages to prophesy, but we must make sure we interpret what we are saying for others to understand, whether we have some one else interpret it for us or we interpret it ourselves.
For this way would be a fitting orderly way to prophesy &/or speak in a different tongue {language}.
*genesis! *PS, Please state your opinion - I promise I won't get offended.

For Example . . ,

Please, read Acts 2:1 - 11, when the apostles were speaking in tongues, the a amazing thing was, they were all speaking in different languages {different tongues},
and yet, they all were understanding what was being said, even though they new not the languages {the tongues} they were speaking in.
There were many different nationalities there, too. All with their own languages.
But everyone understood what was being said, as if it were there own language {their own tongue},
whether it was the apostles speaking - or- just people in the crowd that were listening.
It was as though it were but one language spoken, for they all understood what each other was saying. And, it was a gift given to the apostles, from The Almighty GOD.

Acts 2:1-11
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
7 Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?
8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language?
9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome
11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"

I think that the apostles were speaking in the native language of Galilee. The miracle was not centered on the speech of the Apostles, but on the hearing of the crowd. God moved on the hearing of each person so that what they heard was heard in their native language.
