You don't have the Holy Spirit

"Utterly amazed, they asked: ' Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language?" (Acts 2:7-8).
I think that the apostles were speaking in the native language of Galilee. The miracle was not centered on the speech of the Apostles, but on the hearing of the crowd. God moved on the hearing of each person so that what they heard was heard in their native language.

I am sure that the The Holy Spirit works in many ways, and if The Almighty GOD wants us to speak in another tongue I am sure HE will provide that person with the language of HIS choice.

But non-the-less, who ever is chosen to do this wonderful gift of talking in tongues, will still need to know what his/herself would be saying & would need to interpret or have a interpreter with him, other wise how would anyone know what you were saying? 1Corinthians 14:9 & 13. Please, also read below.

1 Corinthians 14:6-17
6 Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

7 Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes?

8 Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?

9 So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air.

10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning.

11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me.

12 So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.

13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.

14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

I think you may be a little confused about the gift of tongues Jonah2005bt.

The gift of tongues is the vocal expression given by the Holy Spirit through a person in their normal voice, but not in a language understood by the one speaking. Let me say that this is not the same as "speaking in tongues", the praise and prayer language given to every believer that has experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The difference is simple, speaking in tongues or singing in tongues is where the believer is speaking, praying, singing and praising God by the power and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Now concerning the gift of tongues, God is speaking to us by the power and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It may be in a language known or unknown to man. A good example of the gift of tongues is seen in Acts 2:7-11, where the language spoken is known to those hearing it but not to the ones speaking.

I do not see in the scriptures where it says that they all knew what was being said. I think you may be assuming that they did but that is not what the scriptures read. It does say that those in the crowd knew what was being said because it was spoken in their native tongues. But those that were speaking did not know what was being said. Try reading it again and maybe use a different translation or two sometimes it helps me.

I believe that the incident of the Apostles (and Peter) speaking to the crowd in Acts 2 is a separate occurence from the Holy Spirit's coming in the Upper Room. It happened some time after the Holy Spirit came on the disciples and it occurred outside the building.

Note Acts 2:41 - "Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day." Three thousand people wouldn't fit into the Upper Room.

Thus it is quite conceivable that the disciples spoke in many languages inside the upper room, but outside - speaking to the crowd - they only spoke Galilean and God caused each hearer to hear their words in his native language.

Acts 10:24-26
44  While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

1Corinthians 14:22
22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

Peter said to the crowd that which was witnessed was the prophecy of the prophet Joel and I do not see anywhere in the scriptures where it says that God will understanding of unknown tongues to unbelievers. But we can see that over and over the scriptures do say that God will cause them to speak in new tongues ( tongues unknown to those speaking. Jesus didn't say that the believers would understand different languages but He did say that they would speak in new tongues. The miracle of Acts 2 is explained perfectly by Paul in 1Cor 14:22.

As far as the Apostles speaking Galilean, I was not aware that there was such a language. The common languages in Jesus' day in Israel were Aramaic (Aramaen) and Greek, and some Hebrew. I find it much more sound to place the speaking and not the hearing into a supernatural phenomenon.

Speaking in Tongues

I think part of the confusion about tongues is due to the fact that there are more than one kind of tongues. There may be as many as 4 different kinds. 1.)When people are baptized in the Holy Spirit, they receive an unknown tongues prayer language which they can speak at will. 2.)There is an unknown tongues that is for interpretation. This language is not understandable by a listener, but sounds different than 1.) It will be interpreted by someone, either the original speaker or someone else. 3.)A believer may speak a foreign language that he does not know. 4.)A believer may speak in unknown tongues and the Holy Spirit may translate it so the audience can hear it.

There are 5 places in Acts where believers received the Holy Spirit: 1.)Acts 2 in the upper room. 2.)Acts 8 when Philip was in Samaria. Note that the church in Jerusalem sent Peter and John to Samaria so the people could receive the Holy Spirit. It is a 40 mile walk to Samaria from Jerusalem. It was very important that the people in Samaria receive the Holy Spirit. Note that the people believed before Peter and John got there so receiving the Holy Spirit is a separate event from being born again. 3.)Acts 9 when Paul received the Holy Spirit. Note he was born again on the road to Damascus and received the Holy Spirit a few days later. 4.)Acts 10 Cornelius and his family are born again and receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues. They are baptized in water after they are baptized in the Holy Spirit. 5.)Acts 19 Paul is at Ephesus and meets 12 believers. He asks them if they have received the Holy Spirit and they say they do not know anything about the Holy Spirit. He baptizes them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, and then lays hands on them an prays and they all receive the Holy Spirit and begin to speak in tongues and prophecy. Note that in all 5 situations, the people were born again first and received the Holy Spirit at a later time. Nowhere in the Bible does it ever suggest that a person receives the Holy Spirit when he is born again. Also note that in every case, the people that received the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues. In Acts 9, it doesn't say Paul spoke in tongues, but we know he did from I Cor 14.

IMHO, every born again believer should speak in unknown tongues. If a person has not received the Holy Spirit, all he has to do is ask: Luke.11

[13] If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

I have prayed with several people who have received the Holy Spirit. When they ask with a strong desire, they always get the Holy Spirit and the speaking in unknown tongues.

I Cor 14: [22] Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
[23] If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
[24] But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
[25] And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

Note here that tongues are a sign to the unbeliever and also that the unbeliever will think you are mad if he hears you speaking in tongues. How do you resolve this apparent conflict? It is not the same tongues. Acts 2, the tongues were a sign to the unbelievers. However, the unknown tongues which is a prayer language will cause an unbeliever to think that the speaker is mad (or crazy) because the unbeliever has no idea what is going on.

In Mark 16 Jesus prophesied that believers would speak in tongues: [17] And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

In Jude, we are reminded to pray in the Holy Ghost, which IMHO, is praying in tongues: 20] But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

In Ephesias 6, we are also reminded to pray in the Spirit: 18] Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,
