And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph--to Ephraim and Manasseh--saying, "You [are] a great people and have great power; you shall not have [only] one lot, "but the mountain country shall be yours. Although it [is] wooded, you shall cut it down, and its farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots [and] are strong." Joshua 17:17-18 NKJV

Sports psychology demonstrates that positive thinking impacts performance, but what a person can do is not the reason behind Joshua’s optimism—the Lord is.

The psalmist demonstrated the same understanding when he wrote, “My tongue will tell of your righteous acts all day long, for those who wanted to harm me have been put to shame and confusion” (71:24 NIV). The writer isn’t the one who put those who wanted to hurt him to shame—the Lord is.

He’ll do for you what He did for Joseph’s descendants and the writer of Psalm 71. His unlimited power secures every promise. Maybe you’re facing a new business, a difficult relationship—the circumstance doesn’t matter. The reason you can trust God is because He’s already demonstrated His power and His love for you.

In the parable about guests invited to a banquet, the same people who had been told by the religious leaders they could never come to heaven’s feast heard Jesus say, now you can (Luke 14:23). You are one of those people, one of the “uninvited” God chose to save. He has already done the impossible in you and He wants you to know He still will.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to trade “I can’t” for “You can.”
