Luke chapter 3 , verse 7.
Who hath warned thee of the wrath to come?

What does this mean? I think it is to do with when an unbelieving man is dying and is afraid. Perhaps then it occurs to him that bad things await, due to his sins of which he is vaguely aware.

Any explanations would be helpful to clarify the biblical verse please.

With any difficult phrase in the Bible, have a good look at the whole passage where the verse appears.
  • Who is speaking?
  • Who are they speaking to?
  • How does this passage move the story forward?
Also,
  • Are there repeated words or phrases that reveal core theme of the passage
  • Can you find echoes or references to the rest of scripture?

Luke 3:7 He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Jeremiah 36:3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, so that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
John the Baptist is an OT prophet and may well be warning the Pharisees and Scribes of the coming destruction of Judah and the Temple (because of their denial of the promised Messiah).
We can read many similar warnings pertaining to salvation from the coming wrath of God upon a wicked world that also rejects Jesus as God and Saviour -

John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
Romans 5:9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
Ephesians 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
Colossians 3:5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming.
1Thessalonians 1:9 For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,
10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

Hebrews 6:7 For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God.
6:8 But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.

Hebrews 10:26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
10:27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.

Matthew 3:12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.

John 15:6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.

2Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
3:11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,
3:12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!
