Worth Repeating - March 30, 2007
I have a 17-year-old daughter who's always been one of those blessed, amazing, totally compliant children. I got one totally compliant one. Remember though, I had FIVE. Anyway, I was sitting with her while she was getting ready for work the other day, and I said, "You know, Kaley, I think about the most rebellious thing you've ever done is to lather, rinse and NOT repeat."
She laughed and said, "What? You're supposed to repeat every time? If you need me I'll be in the shower."
I could surely learn a lesson or two from that girl. Instant obedience. That's what the Lord wants from us, too. Not necessarily at that good hair hygiene level, but without a doubt, every time we read his Word, we need to be willing and ready to instantly obey.
There is such blessed delight in the life of one who doesn't just read the truth, but obeys it. Take a look at how The Message phrases James 1:22-25: "Don't fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don't act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.
"But whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God--the free life!--even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of action. That person will find delight and affirmation in the action."
Looking for delight and affirmation? Looking for an end to the disconnected scatterbrained life? Find it in acting in obedience.
Find delight, affirmation and a life of purpose in obeying God's truth. Now there's something worth repeating. Even if you never lather and rinse.
