WORD OF THE DAY (— John 8:12 )
" Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that
followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
"

MEDITATE ON THIS ( With Jesus you can see yourself and others clearly)

The expressed love and image of God is shown to us in the person of Jesus the Christ. Knowing Jesus is essential to
loving Jesus. In the Gospel of John, John records seven statements that we call the 7 I AMs of Christ. One such account
is registered in John chapter 8 verse 12 in which Jesus describes Himself as the light of the world.

Earlier in John chapter 7, the religious leaders had sought to kill Jesus because of the words he had spoken, equating
Himself with God. Insisting on setting a trap for Jesus, the story continues in John chapter 8. In chapter 8, the people bring to
Jesus, a woman caught in adultery, assuming that Jesus' teachings of love were somehow in conflict with the law. The people
said, "Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be
stoned: but what do you say?" Jesus replied after writing on the ground, "ye without sin cast the first stone." After the people
left, having been convicted by their conscience, Jesus asked the lady, "where are those thine accusers? Hath no man
condemned thee"? And when she said "no one Lord." Jesus replied, " Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more." After this
scene happens, then Jesus turns to the crowd and says, " I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in
darkness, but shall have the light of life."

The religious leaders in bringing this woman to Jesus for condemnation thought that they saw clearly what was happening.
However, Jesus made it clear that they were walking in darkness and that He was the light that they needed to illuminate the way.
The religious leaders had overlooked their own sins and were focusing on the sins of this lady. However, Jesus held the mirror to their
own faces and told them that they could stone her, but only if they were sinless. The people had presented the law
given to Moses as if it would condemn the woman; little did they know that one greater than the law, the lawgiver, was in
their midst.

The purpose of light is to illuminate the darkness to see clearly, and the purpose of the law is to see the truth that we are sinners
who have fallen short of God's standard. The people thought that their holiness was in their keeping of the law, but Jesus made it very
clear that all were sinners and no one measured up to God's truth. This points to our need for a savior. A savior full of grace and truth.
Scientist tells us that light is composed of waves of electricity and magnetism pulsing in perfect synchronization, likewise we
can look at the light of Jesus, the light of the world, as a perfect blend of the truth of God with the grace of God. Jesus is
the light that allows us to see the truth of the darkness of sins and God's hand of grace given to save us. Now that is a
bright picture.

Your brother in Christ, WNL

Thought for the week:
Next week, we take a look at another I AM of Christ. "I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes
to the father but by me".

Prayer for the week:
Dear God, thank you for meeting me in my state of darkness, blind as can be. Thank you father for sharing
the light to illuminate my path. Now I see clearly that I am a sinner and I have fallen short of your law.
Yet I am not in despair, because your light also reveals to me your beautiful grace that I can freely receive.
Thank you for your light Jesus, I will take you wherever I go. Help me to radiate your light of grace,
evidenced by the way I share your love with others to brighten their day and lighten the way. In Jesus name I pray,
amen.
