Dealing with disappointment (1)
'...Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him...' 1 Samuel 3:19
Welcome to life; disappointment guaranteed! So here are some examples to help you when:
1) You're disappointed with those you look up to. Think of Samuel and Eli (1 Samuel 1-4). Sam's mum, Hannah, entrusted her child to Eli the Priest, confident he'd be a great mentor to the young boy. But Eli turned out to be a weak parent who stood by while his sons abused their priestly privileges, bringing shame to the ministry. Who'd have blamed young Samuel for taking a nose dive when the man he looked up to failed so badly? But somehow Samuel looked beyond his disappointment and kept his eyes on God: 'Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him.' As a result God turned him into one of Israel's greatest prophets.
2) You're disappointed in those you live with. Surely your family won't let you down. Right? Wrong! Ask young Joseph. When God gave him a big dream he thought his brothers would celebrate. Instead they were so jealous and angry that they sold him to human traffickers! What an open door to a life of bitterness - surely that kind of disappointment would leave Joseph emotionally paralysed? But no, even though many years of his life were very, very tough Joseph lived for God in every situation. Finally, many years later the breakthrough came, he became Egypt's Prime Minister and was re-united with his family. So don't let disappointment get you down today.
