Wonderful well or skanky sieve?
'My people have ... dug cisterns ... that leak, cisterns that are no better than sieves.' Jeremiah 2:13
A cistern is like a well. What do wells need to do? Hold water. So when the people dug cisterns that were like sieves, that was a bit useless really! Sometimes, if we've not got God right in the middle of our lives, we can be running about doing so much other stuff that we become a bit like those wells - letting the water drain away when we need it to live.
We all want to feel loved, and successful, and special, and sometimes we look for these things in the weirdest places, forgetting about God completely. You won't find happiness at the bottom of four bottles of WKD, you won't find love having sex with your boyfriend or girlfriend, you won't find success ******** about that new kid to all your mates, and you won't find fulfilment by nicking money from your mum's purse. All those things are like holes in your well. But when you put God in the centre of everything, you'll find He can give you whatever you need.
You need to work at giving yourself strong, God-centred 'walls' to your well. '... blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank with roots that reach deep into the water ... They never stop producing fruit' (Jeremiah 17:7-8 NLT).
Respect God, trust Him and honour Him in everything and you'll find those holes are soon blocked up, and you'll be a wonderful well, not a skanky sieve.
