Thinking about 'the M word'
'IT REQUIRES A CERTAIN APTITUDE AND GRACE. MARRIAGE ISN'T FOR EVERYONE.' MATTHEW 19:11
Isn't this a bit of a funny subject for a teenage Bible magazine? Maybe, but when was the last time you caught yourself daydreaming about some hot guy or girl, wondering what that 'you may now kiss the bride' moment really feels like? A week ago, a day ago, a second ago? Right, so this is for you then!
One marriage counsellor observes, 'Society has made romantic feelings the basis for marriage.' There's nothing wrong with romance but there is so much more needed to make a marriage last. Romance is dependant on physical appearance. Romantic love is exciting, but that does mean that relationships based purely on romance can be shallow. Emotions can be so overpowering that they can cloud your good judgement. A marriage is what you create after the wedding. It doesn't just happen.
You have to build it with, patience, support, compromise, a good friendship and a 'love marked by giving, not getting' (Ephesians 5:21-28 TM). That's why Jesus said, 'Not everyone is mature enough to live a married life. It requires a certain aptitude and grace. Marriage isn't for everyone...if you're capable of growing into the largeness of marriage, do it.'
On the other hand, a wife / husband partnership with Jesus at the centre of their relationship can be something amazing that makes society's definition of romance look lightweight by comparison. Feel free to daydream about that today!
