The truth about David's brothers
'Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons...' 1 Samuel 16:5
Back in the good old days of Bible times, the people of Israel were always scrapping with the neighbouring nations. David's seven brothers were all in the army but none of them would fight Goliath; why? Three reasons:
1) They let the fear of others get to them. Fear is more contagious than the 'flu. If you listen to it long enough you'll get infected. Listening to Goliath and his scare tactics wore down David's brothers. Who are you listening to? Get God's opinion, build your life around it and let His Word to settle every issue.
2) They didn't have a personal track record with God to rely on. David's little battles prepared him for the big ones. He killed a big lion as a boy, a bigger bear later, and Goliath was massive. Was he freaked out by it? No. Listen: 'The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and...the bear...will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine' (1 Samuel 17:37 NKJV). He relied on his 'God moments' from the past, and you can do the same.
3) They may have been fit, but they weren't going for God. You've heard the phrase 'don't judge a book by its cover' - well, people might, but God doesn't. He goes straight to the heart (1 Samuel 16:7 NKJV). David's heart was moulded by years of spending time with God. Can you say that too?
