The roller-coaster ride of life (4)
'He has made everything appropriate in its time...' Ecclesiastes 3:11
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. It sounds like a pretty expensive law firm at the top of a shiny office building doesn't it? Well, these three weren't lawyers, but they were firm on God's law. You see, the foreign king had ideas above his station; he wanted people to bow down to him as if he was some sort of living God. This was clearly against God's law. So when our Jewish trio refuse to bend a knee in the King's direction, we have a problem. A problem punishable by death, and not just any death. Death in an oversize tandoori oven! So, what should our guys do;
a) apologise quick-smart and get on with the business of King grovelling?
b) make a run for it; go find a place to live where the ruler hasn't got such an inflated ego? or
c) stick to their principles and burn for the sake of it? Our heroes chose the third option. Doh! Come on, what good are principles when your body's about to go up in flames. So what's going through their minds?
Well...Daniel 4:17 the guys say 'Our God...is able to deliver us'. They never doubted God's ability. '...And he will deliver us.' They never doubted God's intention. 'But if not...we will not... worship the golden image' (v 18). They never considered an alternative to God. They had to go through to get through. And so do you.
