Surviving an 'SOS'
'... pour out your hearts before Him ...' Psalm 62:8
We all have bad times. And at some point, we'll all have someone close who will die, and leave a massive hole in our lives. So what advice does the Bible give us on how to cope?
1) Don't bottle it up. Did you ever close your eyes when you were a kid, and think 'If I can't see them, they can't see me'? That doesn't work with emotions! They won't go away just because you close your eyes. They're normal, so don't try and hide them away, or pretend they don't exist. God created you to feel - so go with it.
The Bible tells us, 'Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted' (Matthew 5:4 NIV). Be honest with God. 'Pour out your heart before Him,' (Psalm 62:8 NKJ) and He will comfort you.
2) Let your mates help. Don't go and hide in a corner, like the kid who's been told off and isn't letting anyone near them. When tragedy strikes, we all need the encouragement, support (and hugs!) of our friends. And your mates have been called to help - check out Galatians 6:2. 3) Think positively.
Cheesy as it sounds, and little as you may feel like it, focus on the good memories. Make a list of all the other good things you have in life, and thank God for them. When you focus on the good, it's hard not to start feeling a bit better.
