Stewardship (1) it's mine!
'... What do you have that you did not receive? ...' 1 Corinthians 4:7
So what does this word 'stewardship' mean? 'Hands off!' 'You can't have it!' 'It's mine!' These are all common things you hear kids saying when they're playing. But just have a think: have you said (or even thought) that recently? It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking we have the right to everything we have.
Our time is ours, our stuff is ours, we can do what we want with it, right? Uh-uh - wrong. Look at today's verse. Every good thing you have is a gift from God. That's everything: your iPod, your Wii, your GHD's, your allowance... starting to get it? It's all from God. Yes, you may have saved for it or worked for it but ultimately it's God who has given you it, to be the 'steward', or the caretaker, of.
'So what?', I hear you say. 'He's given it to me, so it's mine'. Yep, that's true; but a steward doesn't actually own the property he manages, so he needs to handle things with an eye to pleasing his boss, the owner - in our case, God. He wants us to be sensible and wise with what He's given us, not selfish and boastful, or like those little kids always screaming, 'Gerroff! It's mine!'
But how do we know what God wants us to do with what He's given us? And how come some people get more than others? Don't panic - we've got three more days to make sense of that!
