Liar, Liar
'... those who deal truthfully are His delight.' Proverbs 12:22
It's alright to tell a little white lie isn't it? 'The Lord detests lying lips' (Proverbs 12:22 NKJ). After all, it's not a real lie is it? 'The Lord hates ... a lying tongue' (Proverbs 6:16-17 NLT). It's OK, everyone tells little white lies! 'You must ... speak truthfully' (Ephesians 4:25 NIV). It's impossible to be truthful all the time! 'Do not lie to each other' (Colossians 3:9 NIV). In fact you need to lie sometimes, so you don't hurt people's feelings, right? 'Do not tell lies' (Exodus 20:16 CEV).
There's no excuse for lying, no reasons that make it acceptable. God doesn't mince His words about this. He tells us that lying is something the devil does, 'the devil ... there is no truth in him ... he is a liar and the father of all lies.' (John 8:44 NKJ) God lets us know that '... those who deal truthfully are His delight.'
So be committed to telling the truth, it's an investment into the future: 'Truthful words stand the test of time, but lies are soon exposed' (Proverbs 12:19 NLT). One more thing: when you avoid lying, you actually make your own life easier. Lying is hard work: you have to keep track of everything you say; otherwise you'll trip yourself up! People will know you're lying! Lying is destructive: it trashes trust, ruins relationships and creates conflict. Live truthfully and know that God delights over you.
