Impressive stuff
'When Jesus heard this, He was amazed at him...' Luke 7:9
We know the format by now. A slightly awkward-looking hopeful stands fidgeting before three judges. The nice judge says nicely, 'So what are you going to sing?' and then smiles. The nervous hopeful whispers the name of a multi-award-winning superstar's most famous and difficult song, opens their mouth and begins to sing.
The nice judge listens smiling, the honest and important judge rolls his eyes and the last judge attempts to hide his sniggering. The hopeful leaves rejected and in tears. Another unlikely-looking person wanders in and the judges expect more of the same. But then the new contestant begins to sing and their voice is beautiful, harmonious, tear-jerkingly good. Each of the judges sit with mouths wide open. They are blown away, impressed and most of all amazed!
In today's reading, we discover who impresses Jesus so much that Luke says Jesus was amazed.
Imagine that, being able leave Jesus open-mouthed with amazement! And who pulled this off; who was able to impress God? Not one of the disciples, not a super-religious Bible boffin, but a Roman solider. Luke puts it this way: 'Taken aback, Jesus addressed the accompanying crowd: "I've yet to come across this kind of simple trust anywhere in Israel, the very people who are supposed to know about God and how He works."' Want to impress Jesus? Simple. Just trust Him.
